COAT-OF-ARMS The history of Villa Maria College is summarized, both visually and symbolically, in our coat-of-arms. This shield adorns the Administration Building and is displayed on our class rings, proudly exemplifying our rich heritage. A golden tower serves as a focal point on the shield, signifying the college patroness, the Blessed Mother, as the Tower of David and House of Gold. Directly above the fortress is a fleur-de-lis, the French lily, which represents the origins of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1650. At either side of the Tower are two flaunches, barred with silver and blue, depicting the waters of Lake Erie. Implanted on a red and gold wreath above the fleur-de-lis is a crest of an open book bearing the Latin cross patonce, derived from the coat-of-arms of the Diocese of Erie. The open book complements our college motto, Wisdom and Knowledge, expressed in Latin as Sapient a et Scientia. This briefly expresses an ideal, a program of life, and the spirit of every girl at Villa.
