Help me to deal very honestly with , words and with people, because they are both alive. Henry Van Dyke DEDICATION They were called Suffragettes. They were wives and they were mothers. Their cause was Universal Suffrage for women. They were not girls who pursued a fantasy, but women who fought for a cause. And they won. They are now called Feminists. They are wives and they are mothers. Their cause is not Universal Suffrage, but Universal Equality for women. They are not girls who pursue a fan- tasy, but women who fight for a cause. And they are winning. They are women, strong and determined women, who are proud of their feminine heri- tage. , It is to these women of America, who have furthered the movement of human emancipa- tion, . . . that we dedicate this yearbook. They envision an open society, a society where individual persons form a coheswe unit. They envision a civilization that does not turn its people into one colorless, faceless mob, but rather a culture that allows human diversities and nurtures the quality of being one's self. They give life to thought and thought to life. They not only commend the attributes of man, but expose his negativities as well. They give each student the chance to see beyond her own horizons as they open new avenues of thought. They initiate the development of potentiality, and encourage its progress. By doing this, they give society a new focus and scope. They give of themselves so that we may find ourselves. For this, we thank them. HThey... Rossi It is difficult to be a junior in high school for now she is breaking away from all she has known and is in the process of forming herself. She wants to be independent in a world she feels she has helped to form; she wants her world to be absent of ambiguities and conflicts. She doesn't want to be one of the faceless crowd, ignored or cast aside-she wants to be a person. Through her inner searching, she hopes to attain her potential as a fulfilled human being. To achieve this status, she must enrich her life through interactions with people, education, sports, and activities. Encountering these, she does face problems and difficulties but they will be overcome because of her determi- nation. She is no longer the child following the pattern her parents set. Each day she is moving closer to complete independence and responsibility as a maturing young woman. SOPHOMORES Many of us are still puzzling over the exact meaning of this new ism . . -George McAdam Sophomores are a particularly inquisitive group. They have left the childish antics of a freshman and are rap- idly approaching the hectic world of a junior. They are caught in a limbo, more so than any other group. They are still questioning and pondering over this new iiism -this movement of womanhood. This new value asks them to evaiuate the former and traditional roles of women. Feminism they ask themselves? What is femi- nism? Of what importance is it to me? Is it good for me? What is time ? . And so they arrive at the classic question, What IS me? It is the answer to this question that is so sought after by many young people who are questioning the values set before them. The solution is one the soph- omores must discover for themselves. This awereness of themselves may be found in feminism-a growmg and maturing process of women. 79 Judith Russell, Judith Schmidbauer, Denise Schultz. Deborah PidUChv Janet Pyszczynsm, Pinciurek. Even tests can be more enjoy- able with the proper musical background. Although math is sometimes fun, it is still ten months, preparation for Regents and then, finding out you shouldtve pre- pared better during the year. For freshmen, its a new field opening up before them in the form of an introduction to algebra. Basic concepts and new techniques are constantly appearing and changing to add to the ever fascinating field of math. Magical numbers appear when you have to have an answer but you really don't know what you're doing. And when the year's all over, it seems that most stu- dents, after learning modern math, have forgotten how to add and subtract. 65 Karen Lesniak, Ann Marie Przybylak, Barbara Budek, Donna Solecki, Diane Wolinski, Carol Wojciechowski. SCIENCE Science seeks to explain the impossible and open the mys- teries of life around us. In the classroom this is a difficult process. but science guaran- tees it to be fun. It offers a change to the student who finds that sitting in a class everyday bores her. Labs bring out her ingenuity. Dont worry if it doesn't come out right. we can always fudge it. Tests show the student the perils of goofing off in class. Isn't there a bonus ques- tion? So much to do, so much to learn, and only 50 minutes to do it all. ., tain after me! . Hey look! English, with its grammar drills and literature questions, poses a curriculum filled with diversity. A better understanding of Shakespeare was brought about by the viewing of the play As You Like It at Stratford on Avon. Word Power, a little book with too many words, brought about much discussion. Not another test! I don't care what --- means! Reading famous novels such as Great Expectations and the Red Badge Of Courage, and the works of Emerson and Thoreau kept paper- backs in constant use. This results in exhaustion and a sense of accomplishment in know- ing that she is still alive. When a new plan works and a bas- ket is scored, everyone is satisfied. The basketball player experiences many emotions during a game-tension, enjoyment, and pride in knowing that che whole school's on her side. , M w .y'x K c; M Z; x xx in i 0 V ,W Z Mm , x , 22l 7 X!
