H1story of V111a de Chantal Today when we the class of 1950 look upon the Vxlla ln all 1ts beauty and d1gn1ty when we let our eyes wander over the magrufxcent grounds rn all thelr sprlng splendor rt hardly seems possrble that 50 years ago thxs area was only a cow pasture ugly and bare When Mother Francls Borgla and Sxster Mary Agnes came to Rock Island rn 1899 wrth the purpose of foundmg an academy Rev Thomas Mackm pastor ot St Iosephs Church took them on a tour of the crty to fmd a surtable locatron for the school He took the Slsters up to the very hrghest part of the h1ll overlookrng the tr1-c1t1es and the MISSISSIPPI B1ver and sald Here Slsters rs where you are to erect your throne It appeared to be an almost hope less task but rn 1903 the hrst brown drrt was tossed asrde to make room for the West Wmg Frve years later to the very day a second spadeful gave way to the main bu1ld1ng s founda tlon The beautrful chapel was dedlcated on Iune 10 1908 wrth Archbxshop Spaldmg present Twenty years of contrnued success followed but 1t soon became apparent that more space was needed As a result of the Slsters fervent prayers plus the donatlons from alum nae V1lla Gurld members and fnends rounded out the check of S50 000 of Mr Frank Lew1s of Chlcago and Lew1s Hall was begun on Iuly 19 1929 Dedrcatxon GXSICISSS took place on structure 1930 marked the end of the buxldlng program but the story of Vxlla de Chantal had only begun The Vrlla has been a member of the North Central Assoc1at1on srnce 1919 It IS accred 1ted by the Umverslty of I1l1no1s and llsted on the State s 11st of recogmzed hxgh schools rn I1l1no1s It has always malntalned the hrghest standards of educatron rn relrgnous trcnnmg as well as 1n curncular and extra cumcular GC11Vl11eS The Slsters have always tned to develop ln thexr students noble prmcrples and an ap precratron of all that IS true good and beautzful so that the g1rls would leave the Vxlla wxth well rounded characters capable of meetlng the requlrements of 11fe wlth courage and con frdence If the outstandlng records made by the Vlllas graduates are any lndlcatron the Slsters have accomphshed thelr purpose We the class of 50 wrsh to thank the Vrlla and all the Srsters for the many happy mem ones that the Vrlla holds for us memones that we shall chensh all our hves We thank the Sisters for rmplantlng rn us the rudlments of fa1th courage and perseverance and any suc cess that we achreve rn the future can be largely credlted to the good tramrng we recelved at Vllla de Chantal. Iune 10, and on September 9, 1931, regular classes were begun in the modern, well-equipped
