VILLA DE CHANTAL When in 1899, the Sisters of the Visitation decided to found an academy in Rock Island they had dreams of a beautiful and prosper- ous boarding school. Today we can see the fruits of their labors and realize that the Villa de Chantal has grown up to be every- thing its persevering founders wished it to be. Although the plot of land on which the new school was to be built was then a cow pasture, Mother Francis Borgia and Sister Mary Agnes set to work to purchase the land and to begin work on the academy. Less than a year after the school opened the ground was broken for the west wing, exactly five years later work was begun on the main building and on Iune lU, 1908, its beautiful chapel was solemnly dedicated in the presence of Arch- Bishop Spalding. It soon became evident that more space was needed, so the Sisters tried to raise funds for another addition, in spite ot the depres- sion. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Frank Lewis, the new building was begun on Iuly l9, 1929. Thus the building program of the Villa de Chantal ended, but the work of the patient Sisters was just beginning. The aim of the Sisters of the Visitation of Villa de Chantal has always been to send forth graduates with well-rounded characters, capable ot meeting the requirements of life. To do this the school tries to develop in its students noble principles and a cultural ap- preciation of all that is true, good and beau- tiful. One has only to look at the outstanding records made by its graduates to realize how fully the Sisters have accomplished their purpose. Since 1919 the Villa de Chantal has been a member of the North Central Association. It is accredited by the University of Illinois and is listed among the state's recognized high schools. It has maintained at all times the highest standards of education in religious training as well as in the curricular and extracurricular activities. We, the class of '49, will long remember the happy hours we have spent at the Villa and whatever success we may attain in our future lives we shall attribute largely to the excellent training we have received here. May Villa de Chantal continue to be the illustrious and beautiful school that it has always been, instructing its pupils in the qualities of faith, courage. and perseverance which are so necessary in our world today.
