CLASS HISTORY lt was on the lOth of September l94B A D that the large ship lntellectae was anchored off Prichard Shore Crowds of interested friends relatives and anxious parents gathered atthe wharf to see the sailors and passengers embark for a lourney over the Sea of Learning to find the treasure of knowledge On that cloudless autumn clay as the crowds gathered to watch the departure of the Intellectoe Admiral Laird enrolled the passengers With such a fine staff of seamen to start a voyage on the Sea of Learning we were sure to overcome all stormy obstacles which we might encounter During the first few weeks we were becoming acclrmated to our new surroundings New friendships were being formed and strong ties between officers and sailors established After nine months of sailing sometimes peaceful and sometimes stormy we were told by the Captain that land was in sight and we would go ashore at Freshman Port We were qualified for the accomplishments of the year but rather sad because we had had our last May Queen Carolyn Mattox who had been crowned by Boatswain J T Bryant Supplies and fuel were needed for our ship and we needed recreation While at this port we spent our time in Vacation Amusement Park At Freshman Port we left some of our crew The ones who returned were more determl ned than ever to complete the lourney through Sophomore Port While at Sophomore Port we enloyed staging the Popularity Pagent and of course we have always enjoyed the Christmas dances the Student Council dances and the spring picnics. We began to know what was meant by sailing the Sea of Learning' Before we realized it our course was directed to Junior Harbor We chose as our officers: Billy Robison Captain' Billy Ward First Mate' Terry Cockrell Second Mote' Jimmy Barnes Third Mate. We held many deck games. Football basketball and baseball were regular pastimes. We won laurels in some of these games Our voyage over the Senior Sea has been so crowded with interesting events that we reached Commencement Port before we realized it The Senior class entertained the seamenwith their play Seventeenth Summer in Senior Harbor We shall always have happy memories of the Senior Banquet and the Senior Prom Although our cruise has come to an end we feel that the experience of being the first class to graduate from Vrgor has fitted us for the more im- portant voyages ahead We stand ready one and all to launch out on our new adventure well equipped and full of enthusiasm Witnesses: Long John Silver Peg Leg Black Beard Testatorr Phillip Branch VT' TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT vmmmmtmgnmnmmnmnnmn '61 'K I 'fdfr ' rv 0- 'Q' Tar qv' f... If you have been on the North hall or the North side of the grounds, you have frequntly heard this marching order. Drill, Drill, Drill and more drill is the task of the many band members. But what wonderful performances come from that constant practice. Thanks to Mr. Addison, the band has quite quickly become the largest and in our opinion, the best band in Mobile County. Four years of constant training has produced this superb band to which the student body can point with great pride and say, Our band can't be beatl Only with the closest cooperation on the part of every member in the band could we have achieved this goal . We could say many more fine things about the band, it's leader, the drum maior, Wayne Jones, and the many pretty maior- ettes. BOITOM ROW, LEFT TO RIGll'l: L. In l946our football team won the City Championship in the Fresh- man League . Until our Sophomore year our players, except in basketball, were handi capped by lack of experience as well as age. Our Varsity Wolves started their team-work off with a bang, by defeating Bartonin the fall of 48. Another cause for excitement was the tie our Wolves racked up with the Murphy Bees in 49-50. 49-50 our best sports season in football we won 6 lost 2 and tied one, we gained more respect for our team in the eyes of their opponents as well as the public. Basketball's most successful season was the years 5l -52. The sport is one inwhich our players are very proficient. Every bit of recognition that has been given to our Basketball team has been earned by our boys for their excellent team work. 94 A-49 ,d CGACHES I95I I95Z 2 'Fi' A A-Q -'GN ROBERT C .
