1 f L 4-v , 7. Time maches on, and with it go phenomenal records of outstanding high schools in the world of sports. The 1951-52 edition of VHS sports is the aftermath ot a series ot powerful athletic aggregations. Many lettermen were lost via graduation, thus a downfall came as no surprise. Softball was t.he curtain-raiser, the initial encounter occurring early in September. Ridgway dealt the Eagles two defeats, 12-7 and 17-2, while the Birds split two contests with Karnak, winning 10-O and losing 5-3. Basketball came second on the menu. Being the popular sport that it is many fans anticipated an- other powerhouse five. However, with only one letterman back, the Eagles failed in their attempt to meas- ure up to previous standards. Some ot the high points of the season were a mid-season victory over Car- rier Mills after being behind by 20 points at one time, a 48-45 win over Cairo scored in the last minute of play, a 64-53 decision over our arch-rival Metropolis, and a fine showing against Cave-in-Rock, one of the state's strongest teams. Intramural basketball, volley ball, and ping pong also .had their followers. The boys' basketball championship went to Simpson, while the Chiggers captured the flag in the girls' league. The Dough Girls took top spot in volley ball, with Bennie Russell and Jim Taylor carrying away ping pong honors. With the entrance of spring came baseball and track. The diamond crew had a so-so record, with in- clement weather interfering greatly with the team's success. DQ on ...X D 'Q Q1 ,, f X At Left: Norma Hester, Senior Cheerleader . . .
