What makes it tick?' We answer, Many things . . . Our woods and fields and little, friendly towns And men who put the public welfare first. The yellow buses chugging faithfully up hill and down ln sun or rainy weather: Their drivers and the other men and women whose daily work Makes sure we're warmed and fed, And that our days move forward smoothly. Our building's classrooms, labs and halls which, like a magnet, daily draw us ing And, at the heart of things, the men and women we call 'the faculty'. Yet first and last our school is boys and girls who daily Ride the buses, throng the class rooms . . . Our school's the lengthened shadow of our- selves. The seniors believe that they are finishing this school only to enter a greater school called Life . These years of preparation have aided them in meeting the trials which will beset them, and they have taught them to take advantage of their opportunities. They de- cided on the red rose as the class flower and blue and white as the class colors. As iuniors they made a big hit with their Junior Play, Ghost Wanted , a mystery, and with the proceeds they planned a suc- cessful prom having a South of the Border theme. Their Senior Play was Riddle Me Riches , a comedy. For four years they've been the maior factor in making their school tick. .. .ins . I VIRGIL ALSIP JAMES ANNABLE Illli For Us If's Just A Few Ticks More Finishing their third year of high school the iuniors now know the Gettysburg Address and have heard of Poe and Longfellow through their American Literature books. Besides such s c h o l a r l y things, they have learned that they can manage important activities, such as planning the Junior-Senior Prom and going dramatic in the Junior Play. When the juniors were but freshmen they were the largest class in school and are now the second largest by two members. The school year of '50-'51 would hardly have been possible without the challenging ideals of the in- dustrious iunior class. By taking ad- vantage of opportunities they now have two of their male members on the varsity squad, and two cheerleaders, Thirteen of their members are also members of the VHS orchestra and the chorus has thirteen sophomore members. The girls should more or less dominate the sophomore class because they outnumber the boys two to one. As a whole the sophomore class holds a high percentage on the honor roll, proving that silly sophomores can be smart as well. The sophomores are looking forward to their next halt ot high school life. Time maches on, and with it go phenomenal records of outstanding high schools in the world of sports. The 1951-52 edition of VHS sports is the aftermath ot a series ot powerful athletic aggregations. Many lettermen were lost via graduation, thus a downfall came as no surprise. Softball was t.he curtain-raiser, the initial encounter occurring early in September. Ridgway dealt the Eagles two defeats, 12-7 and 17-2, while the Birds split two contests with Karnak, winning 10-O and losing 5-3. Basketball came second on the menu. Being the popular sport that it is many fans anticipated an- other powerhouse five. However, with only one letterman back, the Eagles failed in their attempt to meas- ure up to previous standards. Some ot the high points of the season were a mid-season victory over Car- rier Mills after being behind by 20 points at one time, a 48-45 win over Cairo scored in the last minute of play, a 64-53 decision over our arch-rival Metropolis, and a fine showing against Cave-in-Rock, one of the state's strongest teams. Intramural basketball, volley ball, and ping pong also .had their followers. The boys' basketball championship went to Simpson, while the Chiggers captured the flag in the girls' league. The Dough Girls took top spot in volley ball, with Bennie Russell and Jim Taylor carrying away ping pong honors. With the entrance of spring came baseball and track. The diamond crew had a so-so record, with in- clement weather interfering greatly with the team's success. DQ on ...X D 'Q Q1 ,, f X At Left: Norma Hester, Senior Cheerleader . . . Shirley Hundley, the song leader, and Barbara Rose, pianist, began the meeting with a selection of gospel songs. Jim Corbitt, the president or Bennie Russell, the vice-president, then took charge of the group and introduced the speaker. The speakers usually are ministers, students from VHS or surrounding colleges. Mary Ann Plater, Secretary and Treasurer, was kept busy recording the minutes ot the meeting and collecting dues. Among the many things accomplished by the YFC during '50-'SI was the organization of a Gospel Caravan. This Caravan group traveled to churches of all denominations, and presented religious pro- grams throughout the year. . . .A e issue. Eventually he will return a calf to another club member as the beginning of a chain project. Judging contests and a parlia- mentary and public speaking contest also drew participants from the Vienna Club this year. The F. H. GIB li HALL MU IC MAKER Music students at VHS begin every day with gentle, dulcent strains of harmony produced by them- selves under the long-suffering direction of Mr. Austin Gibson. For each morning at exactly 8:40 Gibson Hall students take their places and, instruments in hand, begin the forty-minute practice session. Even though the group has not yet completely rubbed the sleep from its eyes the work-out on marches, overtures and waltzes which will eventually be performed at assemblies, plays and that goal of the entire year's efforts, the concert, is usually brisk and business-like. For more than twenty years Mr. Gibson has guided the activities of the music department at VHS and seen its membership grow from a handful to well over a hundred students. This year, for the first time, musicians enjoyed the facilities of the completely finished music room. The play was a 'light comedy with the plot centering around an average American family from Riverview, Illinois, who won a , 524,000 iackpot of prizes. Riddle Me Riches was the radio program from which the play got its name, The many trials and tribulations which beset the poor winners resulted in a hilarious show. fn.-4-' .4 1. Dick Boyd, Bonnie Flora, Norma Davidson, Zack Murphy, Dick Rushing and Barbara Rose look for the real live frog. 2. The prom was no exception. La Doro Deaton and Frank Nutty held hands there too. 3. Girls danced with girls - and old VHS prom custom. 4. Mariorie Moore and Ronald Pickering caught beside the pool. 5. Sophomore waitresses, La Donna Ruble, Shirley Roinbolt, Shirley Hunclley, Eula Smith, and Loretta Burkelow, and iunior sponsors, Mrs. Janet McCoy and Miss Betty McClellan, inspect the refreshments. 6. lrene Deaton, '50 senior, attended the '51 prom also as the guest of Gordon Brewer. t in 7. Margaret Racey, Miss Francis .Amos and Norma Hester make a pretty picture. 8. Junior President, Bennie Russell, looks on approvingly while Bob Smith crowns Janet Taylor, Prom Queen. Fllli THE IGHT 0F 'l'llE PRUM THE GYM BECAME A GARDE On the night of May il, soft lights glowing through a draped ceiling of delicate pastel colors, flowers everywhere, and in the center of the floor, a pool complete with water lilies and a real live frog made the '51 prom one of the most attractive in recent years. High point of the prom was the crowning of a queen chosen by lot from the senior girls. Each girl as she entered signed her name and dropped it in a box. The queen's name was drawn by Junior President, Bennie Russell, iust before the first dance. Louise Taylor was the lucky girl crowned Wit.h a wreath of red roses. Committees in charge of arrangements included: Program- Sue Thomas, Bill Owens, Nellie Evans and Zack Murphy, Refreshments-Barbara George, Barbara Racey, Dick Rushing and Billy Brown, Decorations-Tommy Benton, Eddie Brown, Carolyn Huckleberry, Dixie Hinkle, Mary E. Johnson and Hillis Johnson. All day before the prom a tantalizing smell of baking cake pervaded the building. At intervals members of the re- freshment committee appeared clad in aprons, their mouths wreathed with crumbs. There was some doubt that enough of the dainty little cakes with the numerals '5i in colored icing would survive the sampling of the committee to feed the iuniors and their guests. Formal entertainment included songs by Nellie Evans, Sue Thomas, Zack Murphy and Bill Owens. . iz ,Pai .3-:givin ' fry, :-.1 'z- A -. j. F- f-:Vi M., t K-1.,,,, 43' ,QT -.1 . 3:45, .
