For the second consecutive year the mystery of who was Vienna's basketball queen was the sub- ject foremost in the mind of the VHS student body. This year no one could be sure of the queen's ident- ity until the night of the crowning. The four Senior candidates chose able managers this year when Mary Grant chose George Mullinax, Mary Ann Car- aker asked Ramon Webb, Cherry Ann Crews picked Dean Nicholson and Helen Huckleberry chose Joe McHenry. The new building offered the manag- ers lots of hall space to hang posters and do a little campaigning, Finally on the week before the elec- tion, as a climax to the campaigning, each manager put on an assembly to try to convince the students that his candidate was just a little prettier. lllllllHEH lllUSlEllU UUEEll IS lllllllllllfll At last the night arrived. On Nov. 18 as the house lights dimmed and colored lights were cast on the throne, the or- chestra struck up- Pomp and Circum- stance. The cheerleaders and basket- ball squad were the first to march in. Bonnie Flora acted as Mistress of Cere- monies and introduced each person as he appeared. The attendants and their escorts entered next followed by the flower girls. Then the Queen, Cherry Ann Crews, appeared on the arm of her escort, Dean Nicholson amid the ap- plause ofthe audience. The crown bear- er, little Russie Riepe, was last of the procession. When she was seated, Lew- is Stewart came forward and crowned Queen Cherry Ann with a circlet of red carnations. Jim Hogshead then pre- sented her with a gold locket as a gift of the squad. After the recessional the court withdrew to their reserved seats above the crowd. Cherry Ann then toss- ed the ball to start the game which end- ed in a 75-26 victory for Vienna over Karnak. The evening was climaxed by a public dance spon: 'red by the P. E. Club.
