The schedule showed three contests with two resulting in victories. The Eagles opened the season at Karnak. The Raiders had beaten the Eagles twice before and Vienna was determined to avenge those losses. But a fighting Eagle crew went down to defeat by the narrow margin of 7-6. Th second game was with Mounds City at the Fairgrounds, and the Birds put on a great rally in the final two innings to pull the contest out of the fire and emerge victorious by a l0-7 score. The final game of the year was played on a Friday afternoon at the Fairgrounds with Karnak. Before the entire student body the Eagles showed the stuff, and slaughtered the Raiders l4-4 to more than get even for their opening game loss to the Raiders. SECOND ROW: Thomas Watson, Billy Stoner, Joe McHenry, Jim Hogshead, Ramon Webb, Tom Hogshead, Val Flora, Don Flannigan, Clifford Bradshaw, Bennie Russell. THIRD ROW: Wiley Mathis Imanagerl, Ronald Webb, Jimmy Test, James Faulkner, James Bell, Bob Plunkett, Ken- neth Brown, Carl Davidson. The high-flying Eagles from Vienna High gave VHS another powerhouse this year, as they possessed an enviable record. The Eagles, with 7 lettermen back, captured their first four contests before bowing to Cave-in-Rock. The Eagles then played a terrific game at Marion for three quarters, before succumbing to a Wildcat rally in the final quarter. The final score was 55-48. Another tough foe for the Birds was Murphysboro. After playing a stellar first half, Vienna tell apart and was beaten 70-46. One of the highlights of the season was the mid-year conference tourney which was held at Vienna. The Eagles downed Rosiclare 53-40 in opening round play and then tripped mighty Cave-in-Rock 64-5l. This set the stage for a Vienna-Carrier Mills championship tilt. Before an overflow crowd the Eagles fell victims to the hard-fighting Wildcats and were beaten 56-45. This loss deprived Vienna of their third consecutive tourna- ment championship. The Eagles went to the Metropolis Regional as favorites for the third consecutive year, but once more they were upset in the final game by Cave-in-Rock 44-4l.
