But in the fall of 1946 the dream began to take concrete form. Then in the chilly spring weather of 1947 the men and women of Johnson County gathered on Lincoln's Birthday to vote on bonds for the purpose of erecting an addition to Vienna High School. That the bonds were voted- easily--is a tribute to the real interest which the people of Johnson County have in the educational opportunities of their children. Months passed while blue prints were drawn and finally the bids on construction were 'taken and opened. The weeks that followed were full of disappointment for prices had sky-rocketed and much of the original plan had to be altered. The auditorium, shops and bus garage had to be sacri- ficed, as did additional gymnasium space, before the plans could be whittled down sufficiently to meet the funds on hand. At last the final blue prints were complete and once again bids were taken. The Rust Construction Com- pany of Belleville, Illinois, was awarded the contract and in October, 1948, ground was broken and actual construction began. The year of 1948-1949 was a difficult one but school went on over and around the activities of workmen. This year those Freshmen of 1946 graduate from the completed build- ing. The classes which follow will take the lockers, the cafeteria, the spa- cious halls and pleasant class rooms of the new building for granted but the Class of '50 will always feel that the new building is somehow pe- culiarly their own, and so the lllianna of 1950 attempts to tell the story of the community and the men, the faculty and the student body who planned and worked for and now work and study in the new building . rms is inf cummuniii From these towns and villages and from the farms along the roads that link them come the students of Vienna High School. 6, ti'g I. ...---.l ....- r' ,s 'mm' ,Q 1 3 liwk 135: NlPPEl1'S eiiocaiw --J Tunnel ew Burnside. Hunsaker, Principal These are the men-the men on the school board and the principal-the men who planned, figured, and worked toward the new building . There were many nights that lights burned until all hours while Mr. Hun- saker and the board labored over the many problems that arose concerning the new building . But they are more than eight individuals. They represent the entire community whose money and interest were bound up in the ven- ture-the merchants, professional men, and the farmers. Here are the jobs that represent school district 13-3. The late Mr. F. E. Worrell was president of the school board when the plans for the new building were begun. Even though his health was- bad he worked as hard as any one individual toward the final goal of the building and though he was unable to see its completion, it is nevertheless, in part at least, a memorial to his life-long interest in the improvement of educational opportunities for the children of Johnson County. Mr. Leslie Hogshead, President. Mr, Hogshead is the owner and proprietor of the Hogshead Feed and Produce Store in Vienna. He resides in Vienna. Dr. Earl A. Veaeh. Dr. Veach is a practicing physician in Johnson County and the sur- rounding area. He resides in Vienna. Mr. Hal W. Johns. Mr. Johns is the station agent for the New York Central Railroad in New Burnside. He resides in New Burnside. Mr. Otis McHenry is a part- owner of a general store in Buncombe. He resides in Bun- combe. Mr. William H. Beauman. Mr. Beauman owns and operates the Top 'O the World Orchards south of Tunnel Hill. He re- sides near Tunnel Hill. Mr. W. E. Smith. Mr. Smith is the owner and proprietor of Smith's Hardware Store in Vi- enna. He resides in Vienna. Mr. Clifford Veach. Mr. Veach is the Gulf Oil distributor for this area. He also raises beef cattle on his farm at West Vi- enna. He resides in Vienna. Y n-.i f, t NN mi M3 I ey W I I II ll in I up Ti I III ,I II, III ,, IJ l 2 'e - i' 'ie -5 i ta i e R L V Vi 5 A WTAE 3? During the entire four years which the Class of '50 worked and played at Vienna High School the new building cast a shadow of excitement and expectation over almost every important ac- tivity. Though the old building was crowded and uncomfortable, though students sat in double seats in the study halls and there was no place to put books or hang coats they assured each other that in a little while there would be an end to the inconveniences. But inconveniences did not stifle the ambition or abilities of the class. Outstanding in sports, they made up the majority of one of the school's most successful first ten in basketball. Their prom, held because of construction then in progress, off campus for the first time in years, was nevertheless suc- cessful and well-attended. Their Junior and Sen- ior plays brought to life the unforgettable ln- ner Willy . But their last year was made mem- orable by the fact that during that the new building became an actuality and the four-year dream was fulfilled. i. The decoration committee for the '49 prom: J. Behind them are three years of enthusiastic ef- fort-a satisfactory record in sports, a difficult and different class play successfully presented, a highly enjoyable prom and picnic. They, too, have suffered the difficulties and inconveniences ofvthe new building's construc- tion but for them the coming year holds the possibilities of many new and more satisfying activities. They look forward to using the library which next year will be func- tioning smoothly in its new location. The cafeteria and science labs, the projection room and new office will all be in use for the first time through- out the year. The Sophomores have the distinction of being the largest class in school. As Freshmen they bore up bravely under the tribulations of entering high school in the shadow of concrete mixers and bull-dozers. For them this year has seemed tame enough compared with the excitements and uncertainties of their first year but they are looking forward to the responsibilities and honors of their Junior year which is now just over the horizon. The schedule showed three contests with two resulting in victories. The Eagles opened the season at Karnak. The Raiders had beaten the Eagles twice before and Vienna was determined to avenge those losses. But a fighting Eagle crew went down to defeat by the narrow margin of 7-6. Th second game was with Mounds City at the Fairgrounds, and the Birds put on a great rally in the final two innings to pull the contest out of the fire and emerge victorious by a l0-7 score. The final game of the year was played on a Friday afternoon at the Fairgrounds with Karnak. Before the entire student body the Eagles showed the stuff, and slaughtered the Raiders l4-4 to more than get even for their opening game loss to the Raiders. The high-flying Eagles from Vienna High gave VHS another powerhouse this year, as they possessed an enviable record. The Eagles, with 7 lettermen back, captured their first four contests before bowing to Cave-in-Rock. The Eagles then played a terrific game at Marion for three quarters, before succumbing to a Wildcat rally in the final quarter. The final score was 55-48. Another tough foe for the Birds was Murphysboro. After playing a stellar first half, Vienna tell apart and was beaten 70-46. One of the highlights of the season was the mid-year conference tourney which was held at Vienna. The Eagles downed Rosiclare 53-40 in opening round play and then tripped mighty Cave-in-Rock 64-5l. This set the stage for a Vienna-Carrier Mills championship tilt. Before an overflow crowd the Eagles fell victims to the hard-fighting Wildcats and were beaten 56-45. This loss deprived Vienna of their third consecutive tourna- ment championship. The Eagles went to the Metropolis Regional as favorites for the third consecutive year, but once more they were upset in the final game by Cave-in-Rock 44-4l. ww Jw' if f .f ,v' 3 it SEL Puff! The boys had basket ball teams from each bus and one consisted of boys who didn't ride buses. The girls teams were composed of the five P.E. classes. They played volley ball as well as basketball. Students not interested in organized competition could try their hands at shuffle board and ping-pong in the lobby. its V. H. S. For the second consecutive year the mystery of who was Vienna's basketball queen was the sub- ject foremost in the mind of the VHS student body. This year no one could be sure of the queen's ident- ity until the night of the crowning. The four Senior candidates chose able managers this year when Mary Grant chose George Mullinax, Mary Ann Car- aker asked Ramon Webb, Cherry Ann Crews picked Dean Nicholson and Helen Huckleberry chose Joe McHenry. The new building offered the manag- ers lots of hall space to hang posters and do a little campaigning, Finally on the week before the elec- tion, as a climax to the campaigning, each manager put on an assembly to try to convince the students that his candidate was just a little prettier. lllllllHEH lllUSlEllU UUEEll IS lllllllllllfll At last the night arrived. On Nov. 18 as the house lights dimmed and colored lights were cast on the throne, the or- chestra struck up- Pomp and Circum- stance. The cheerleaders and basket- ball squad were the first to march in. Bonnie Flora acted as Mistress of Cere- monies and introduced each person as he appeared. The attendants and their escorts entered next followed by the flower girls. Then the Queen, Cherry Ann Crews, appeared on the arm of her escort, Dean Nicholson amid the ap- plause ofthe audience. The crown bear- er, little Russie Riepe, was last of the procession. When she was seated, Lew- is Stewart came forward and crowned Queen Cherry Ann with a circlet of red carnations. Jim Hogshead then pre- sented her with a gold locket as a gift of the squad. After the recessional the court withdrew to their reserved seats above the crowd. Cherry Ann then toss- ed the ball to start the game which end- ed in a 75-26 victory for Vienna over Karnak. The evening was climaxed by a public dance spon: 'red by the P. E. Club.
