THE OPTIC 1972 Presented By The Journalism Staff Victory High School Clarksburg, West Virginia Randal O’Field, Editor Sandra Griffiths, Advisor Foreword By combining new techniques with traditional ideas, the Journalism Staff of 1972 has achieved a satisfactory goal. This goal is the Optic 1972. After many hours of diligent training, guidance and labor, the Optic '72 has been completed. We have created this yearbook so that you will be able to return to it in future years and recall the many activities of Victory High School. Debi Layfield Alice Barberio Jeanne San Julian Julie Alasky Robert Christafore Neil Maxson James Loser Randal O'Field Editor-in-chief BUSINESS MANAGER ACTIVITIES EDITOR CLASSES EDITOR COPY EDITOR COPY EDITOR PHOTOGRAPHER AND SPORTS EDITOR ASSISTANT PHOTOGRAPHER SUPPORTING STAFF Lu Ann Boyce Bobby Bright Jodi Brooks Ruth Ann Leuliette Allen Lowther Vicki Lowther Rosemary Medina Angela Scarnati Sharon Thomas 3 The Journalism Staff Spends An Equal Amount Of Time On The Eagles Eye Newspaper The Journalism Staff has two enormous jobs at Victory ... preparing the Optic and the Eagle's Eye. There is very little time for the staff to rest from all this work. However, Jodi Brooks finds time to let her emotions go while cropping an interesting picture. 4 The 1972 Journalism Staff Excellent weather, a spirited bonfire, an excited and beautiful queen and a hard-fought game highlighted the 1971 VHS Homecoming activities. To top these off, the Mighty Eagles saw a homecoming victory by defeating the Roosevelt-Wilson Presidents by a score of 42 to 7. At half-time Stephanie Layfield was crowned 1971 VHS Homecoming Queen. Her court consisted of Julie Alasky, Ruth Ann Leuliette, Debbie Radcliffe and Marla Lada. We Will Soon Be Abandoning The Halls Of Victory, But We Shall Never Abandon The Treasured Thoughts That She Has Given Us. We Remember Homecoming Week 7 The Night The Mighty Victory Eagles Assassinated The Presidents From Roosevelt-Wilson High School Having Room For Memories Of The Overwhelming Victory Eagle Spirit Signs with Beat the Hill Out of WI,” The Indians are Papooses and Beat Morgantown, all show the great school spirit that is displayed throughout the halls of Victory High School. This spirit is carried from the school to the football field or basketball court during each game. 10 11 Remembering Football Victory High School is known and respected throughout the state for its tremendous athletic ability, especially during football season. We can easily remember one year ago when we were City-County, Big Ten Champs and State AAA Runners-Up. We came so near to all of these honors this year, but could not fulfill them all. 12 MAZIO Recalling Student Life Activities 14 SENIORS Julianne Kay Alasky Karen Allison Flossie Jean Anderson The Class Of 1 972 Alice Ann Barberio Richard Barberio Edward Barnes The Mighty Seniors Lead The Way This walk, these steps and these doors belong to the seniors. 18 David Lee Been Sheila Kay Blake David Edward Bowen Dixon Brown Cathy Lynn Bennett John Bland David Bernard Bowers Mary Demetra Brown Noreene Rae Bianco Judy Bland Marlena Breeson Arthur Allen Bundy George Bird Lawrence Boals Rodney Alan Broadwater Romeo William Caloccia 19 Randy Channel Thomas Collins John Joseph Cortese Robert Manuel Christafore Joseph Marcus Conch James William Cox Nancy Clevenger Robert Charles Conner Terry Cox Robert Clutter Robin Ilene Corley Charlene Crock English 12 students learn by means of an overhead projector. 20 Mary Elizabeth Cummings Karleen Marie D'Anselmi Michael Allen Dean Larry E. Most of all sports are her hobbies. Julie's plans to further her education are undecided. Senior Maid Of Honor Ruth Ann Levliette Ruth Ann is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Leuliette of Hepzibah. Her activities include Band, G. A. A., White House Conference, Volunteens, Pep Club, French Club, National Honor Society, Girl's Sports Team, F. T. A., and Speech Club. Her hobbies include sewing, all sports, and just having a fun time. She claims that in the future she would like to major in Home Economics of Physical Education. Sophomore Princess Marla Lada and Junior Princess Debby Radcliff had already been announced to the audience on that warm October 7th at Hite Field. There were three girls remaining. All of them were seniors and one of them was the queen. These girls were Julie Alasky. Stephanie Layfield and Ruth Ann Leuliette, and the audience did not know who was the queen. The announcer called Julie Alasky, whom everyone knew now was a Senior Maid of Honor and not the queen. Tension and anxiety, hope and fear, grew between Ruth Ann and Stephanie as they grasped one another's hands. Julie had now reached her place in front of the band and the announcer called the Second Senior Maid of Honor, Ruth Ann Leuliette. The 1971 Homecoming Queen was Stephanie Layfield. . . . Walter Shockley works on a project in his Art class. Senior Zoology students, Roger Matheny and Ed Drummond, BELOW, find class interesting in the process of dissecting a frog, while Sophomore Russell Talerico, RIGHT, begins cutting up a worm in Biology class. 166 Things As They Were Rick Rome poses as Geraldine at the Student Council Assembly to introduce the project to build a school in a foreign country. At the annual V. H.S. Talent Show, the first place winner in the Rock, Country, Pop Division was The Common Folk; Ed Drummond, Jeanne San Julian, Randy O'Field, and Conni San Julian. 167 We’ve Only Just Begun Many memories have been captured since the 1971-72 term began at Victory High School. These memories have been displayed throughout the Optic 1972 to help you recall them more easily. I join with the Journalism Staff, hoping that each Victory High School student will use this yearbook as a reminder of old acquaintances. Eagle Spirit, and the greatest school. In conclusion, we extend our gratitude to every individual who helped make the Optic 1972 a success. RANDAL O’FIELD Editor-in-chief r r4« ? ► 4 . £ ‘ . .
