The 1969 Optic Published by the Journalism Class Victory High School Clarksburg, West Virginia LANE LAUDERMAN, Editor MRS. B. J. NOAH, Advisor Fiftieth Anniversary We, the students of Victory High School. . . On September 18, 1917, two hundred-fifty freshmen began their high school years at Washington Irving High School. These students had the same anxiety as do other freshmen and carried on the year as such. Some of the students, not being accustomed to high school, found it rather difficult, but the majority of the students had no trouble passing on to the class of the Sophomores. Maybe, as for some, the Sophomore year seemed dull for there was no more teasing from the Seniors and the Sophomores felt unimportant. The next year, though, as Juniors, they looked at the past with pleasant memories. But now, they felt just as important as the Seniors. Pledge ourselves to love our school, to obey its regulations, to uphold its ideals . . . While these students carried on the trials of Sophomores and Juniors, a new school was being built in Coal District, Adamston. The name Victory was chosen, a very appropriate name for symbolizing the U.S. victory in Europe. In September of 1919, 15 Seniors transferred from Washington Irving to Victory High School. The principal Fred V. Bouic certainly had no trouble in arousing the spirit which has become so much a part of Victory’s tradition. The students were proud to be the first Seniors in a brand new modern school. On May 10, 1920, the fifteen Seniors descended the front steps for the last time and thus ended the first year of Victory High School. To support its code of morals and respect and maintain its good name . . . 2 During the first ten years of Victory’s existence, there were many new clubs formed. Most of these have been continued on throughout the years. The Debating Club became outstanding in Harrison County as it took city and county awards. A Drama Club along with the Junior Ninety Club, a club for Juniors with a 90 average in English was formed. Down through the years some of the clubs that were formed have been dropped. However, new clubs were instituted to replace them and these have been continued each year. To honor our parents and obey the laws of our state and nation. To respect and be courteous to our principal, teachers and fellow students . . . The Windmills of Holland” was the first production of Victory’s music department. It was presented in 1920 by the choir and orchestra under the direction of Miss Bonnie Lynn. The Choir has always been noted as an outstanding group. The boys’ and girls’ Glee Clubs along with the A ’Capella Choir have traveled each year to various parts of the state including Beckley, Morgantown and Charleston The Band has had just as equally good record as have the other departments of the school. It has received many awards and ovations for its performances. Like the Choir, the Band has also traveled around the State. Through the years the band has participated in many festivals and events as it still does today. To be loyal to our school in thought, word and deed and to give her always of our best efforts. To use every opportunity to foster ideal school citizenship. A new wing was added to Victory in 1957 Perhaps the best known and most talked about department of the school is the Sports Department. Sports has become a valuable asset to Victory as it has with many schools. Basketball got a good start at Victory, as, in the first year, the team showed the rest of the State that a small school had determination. The records of the basketball team never faltered. They were always in favor of a winning season. Two times in the history of Victory’s sports did the team hold the state Basketball Championship; 1933 and 1941. The team has always placed high in tournaments and ratings. To Victory’s Hall of Fame belong such players as Rusty Simms, Buck Powell, Harry Minter, Si Floriana and Mickey McClung. Even though football had a late start, it progressed rapidly. Coach Wallace did wonders with the first team as they won one game the first season, but they came back to have an almost perfect second year. As the years went on, the team began to develop. New coaches came along; new developments in football came about. The records have shown that Victory’s football team was one of the most talked about and it was even feared by other teams. But there was one day in the history of the team that brought the school fame, even to the farthest parts of the State . . . That was the day, in 1957, that John Mazzei came to coach our team. From that day on Victory’s team has been one of the best in the State. For twelve years Coach Mazzei has developed the boys into a winning team. This winning team has held the Sam V. Mazzei award since 1957; giving it to their city rivals, only twice in that time period. The Alma Mater Hail, Alma Mater Hail, hail to thee Dear in our memories You’ll always be Within Victory’s portals Friendship so loyal, so true Hail dear old Victory, Hail, hail to thee. All through the years Your name will be Symbol of honor and loyalty Deep our devotion to friends So faithful, so true Hail, Victory High School, Hail, hail to you. by Raymond Sehon There is no greater quality than that of spirit. But, at Victory, spirit involves more than just cheering at games. It involves the Winged Victory, the stage with its scarlet curtain, the halls that so often seem so lonely but are really alive with the sound of Victory. 5 Foreword The first graduating class left Victory High School in 1919. Since then the unending Victory tradition and great school spirit has grown in the hearts of all students who have attended. During a three year span at Victory, students have made lasting memories of the teachers, classes, favorite subjects, cheerleading, band, great football and basketball teams, noon hour activities, special awards, that all-important Senior year, the halls of V.H.S., especially the classmates and long-lasting friendships made during this time. These same memories have been shared by students of Victory High School for fifty years. While commemorating this fiftieth Anniversary of Victory, the students of 1969 should remember tradition and remain loyal to their Alma Mater. We are only lucky because our memories are more recent ones. Although, within a few years, our school may no longer be known as Victory High, its spirit and love will remain in the hearts of its former students forever. The 1969 Optic staff hopes that we have captured a few memories of this year to add to the pleasant thoughts of former years at V.H.S. My sincere thanks go to all who assisted in bringing this publication to you, especially our excellent staff. A Favorite Teacher Graduation time brings memories of happy moments of high school years and those teachers who helped make them more pleasant. Seniors realize that as sophomores, lasting impressions are made by teachers and classes, and to succeed in future years you must first learn the basics. Looking back to sophomore English every Senior remembers that one teacher who understanding helped them through themes, book reviews and grammar. She did this and at the same time made learning fun. Everyone that has been connected with Journalism also has a fond memory of working under her guidance and help. Memories are formulated of a teacher who was understanding, gracious and warm. The Class of ’69 dedicate this Optic with sincere appreciation to Mrs. Betty Noah. Mrs. Noah holds McGregor, the Sophomore magazine sale mascot. 8 9 10 Mr. Glen Willis has served as principal at Victory High School for three years. He began with the Senior Class of 1969 when they were Sophomores and has led them through a trying time in their lives. Our thanks go to him for his leadership and supervision.
