THE 1967 OPTIC PUBLISHED BY THE JOURNALISM STAFF OF VICTORY HIGH SCHOOL CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA EDITOR: KAY GILLESPIE ADVISOR: BETTY JO NOAH BUSINESS MANAGER: MONICA TARANTINO ART EDITOR: PEGGY GOODNIGHT I As another year draws to a close, we find that we have many joyful memories which will be cherished throughout the years to follow. For the Seniors 1967 was a year of excitement, with an outstanding sports curricula, social events, and scholastic achievements. Also, there was sadness as they prepared for graduation, knowing that thef ' were leaving behind a memorable three years. The Sophomores and Juniors have many things to look forward to during their next years at Victory High School. We, the Staff, hope that this, the '67 Optic, will help each student relive this year,- bringing forth some of the highlights of his school life. It has been said that one opens a book with anticipation and closes it with profit. We hope that this book will meet these requirements. I wish to extend my sincere appreciation to Mr. Buffington and Mr. Furner, our faithful photographers; to Mr. Willis and the entire faculty; to Mrs. Noah, our advisor; and especially to the staff for their continuous assistance and support. 2 Kay Gillespie, Editor We Build The Ladder By Which We Rise Our school days, from the time we entered first grade to the day of graduation, can be compared to a ladder of learning. Only by gaining knowledge and wisdom can we reach the top. As a Sophomore, one learns to work with his fellow students; learning what will be expected of him in the future. When he becomes a Junior, he possesses more wisdom and is more capable of accepting responsibilities; thus adding rungs to the ladder of learning. During one s Senior year, the final rungs are constructed. The student is now qualified to face the world and make his own decisions. Therefore, one can justly say, We build the ladder by which we rise. ' 3 Construction Begins As Sophomores . . . When you entered the doors of Victory High School, you began to ascend the ladder of learning on which you would proceed upward for the next two years. You earned the Victory Creed, the Alma Mater, and the true meaning of the Victory Spirit, as well as spending several hours each day studying in the classrooms. You were on the threshold of what could, and would be, the most important years of your life . . . growing little by little into a responsible adult. 4 Continues Throughout The Junior Year This year has proven to be a wonderful experience; for as a Junior, more privileges were bestowed upon you. Having sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom, assuming the production of the annual Junior play as well as other various school activities, you have demonstrated without a doubt that next year, as Seniors you will be a class of which you and your school may very well be proud. 5 The Last Rungs Are Senior •ViNT. It was only during your final year that you realize how quickly the time had passed. Was it actually only three years ago that you stood in the halls — a lonely Sophomore — frightened by the thought of high school? Now your Senior year has come to a close: a year of anticipation, excitement, and sorrow. You are now ready to go forth into the world, making your own way, and accepting life's responsibilities. Yes, you have ascended the ladder of learning and are now gazing into the future. What does it hold for you? 6 Added During The Year Vice President: ANTHONY ROME Secretory: JOSEPHINE MENENDEZ Treasurer: FRANCIS IAQUINTA 7 Faculty Sophomores Juniors Seniors Favorites Activities Organizations Athletics Advertisements 8 13 21 33 43 67 77 91 07 19 A Man With A Purpose three years at Victory High School have given you a sense of responsibility both community and national. IF you have learned to be accurate, to analyze, to discover, IF you realize the folly of not seizing an opportunity and have learned not to impinge on others rights, IF you realize that what you do and how you think does matter and does have impact, THEN we have not neglected nor side-stepped our duty as teacher and friend TO you who have come under our supervision. God speed you on your way. This was Mr. Willis's first year at Victory High School. He was formerly Assistant-Principal of Shinnston High School. MR. GLENN WILLIS, Principal ALMA MATER Hail Alma Mater Hail, hail to thee Dear in our memories You'll always be Within Victory's portals Friendship so loyal, so true Hail, dear old Victory, Hail, hail to you. All through the years Your name will be Symbol of honor and loyalty Deep our devotion to friends So faithful, so true Hail, Victory High School: hail, hail to you. 10 VICTORY CREED We, the students of Victory High School, pledge ourselves to love our school, to obey its regulations, to uphold its ideal, to support its code of morals, and respect and maintain its good name. To honor our parents, and obey the laws of our state and nation. To respect and be courteous to our principal, teachers, and fellow students. To be loyal to our school in thought, word, and deed, and to give her always of our best efforts. To use every opportunity to foster ideal school citizenship. Dedication When we recall the highlights of our school life, it will be to our teachers and advisors to whom we owe our greatest tributes. Words cannot express the respect and gratitude of everyone, toward a person that has been counselor, teacher, and friend. Because she has worked for and with us, and has given generously of her time and wisdom; we wish to express our sincere respect and admiration. In appreciation for such devoted service, the Optic Staff proudly dedicates the 1967 Optic to you . . . Mrs. Winifred McIntyre. 13 Faculty In Appreciation We the class of 1967 wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to our class advisors for their continuous guidance during our three years at Victory. Homecoming Festivities 1967 Autumn's Eve was chosen as the theme of the 1966 Victory High School Homecoming which was held on October 14 and 15. The Victory Eagles challenged Morgantown's Mohi-gans in a game which ended with Victory once again on top in a triumphant win. During the half-time exercises, the 1966 Homecoming Queen, Miss Terry Hyre, was crowned by the Principal, Mr. Glenn Willis. Serving as Senior Maids of Honor were Miss Kay Gillespie and Miss Charleen Estep. Miss Priscilla Ventura served as Junior Princess and the Sophomore Princess was Miss Kathy Morris. On October 15, Terry reigned over the 1966 Homecoming Dance which was held in the school gymnasium from eight to eleven o'clock P.M. The New Mason-Dixons provided the music for this event. One of the highlights of the dance was the presentation of the Queen and her court with their escorts who were selected by the Hi-Y. They were as follows: Allen McAtee, Kenny Fittro, Robert Ferris, Chuck Freeman, Larry Fittro, and Leon Westfall. After their performance the play cast presented a small token of appreciation to Mrs. Noah for her help and assistance. The Haunting of Hill House was a chilling, mystifying study in mounting terror in which a small group of psychically receptive people were brought together in Hill House, a brooding mid-Victorian mansion, known as a place of evil and ill will. Led by the learned Dr. Montague, who was conducting research in supernatural phenomena, the visitors came to probe the secrets of the old house and to draw forth the mysterious powers which it was alleged to possess; power which had brought madness and death to those who had lived there in the past. The play was presented before the student body December 8 and also before a spellbound audience December 9, 1966 in the school auditorium. The Junior play cast proved this, their first play, to be one of the best ever produced at Victory High School. 87 Seniors Present Share Bath” Share Bath opened with the landlady leading the hesitant Alice into George's bachelor quarters, she attempted to assure Alice that there was no harm in sharing George s bathroom until her own could be repaired. George was practically never home anyway. That was how it began, and that was why the woman-hating bachelor, George, was so startled when a pretty girl walked calmly out of his bathroom. Since George had recently left home to get away from women, he strongly objected to this invasion of his bachelor quarters. His friends tried to warn him he had better run for the hills — girls without jobs are a special menace to bachelors as they have nothing to do but think up schemes for snaring a husband. George hastily wangled a modeling job for Alice and, as additional protection, decided to marry her off to someone else. He chose his friend Buddy and — after a quick look at Alice who had a sweet disposition and stunning figure — Buddy kindly agreed to take her off his hands. It looked easy, Buddy's other love (besides girls) was food. Alice couldn't cook but George was an amateur chef and he set up a romantic dinner for two with candlelight. It looked romantic — so much so that an unexpected caller, Alice's exfiance, laid Buddy low with a well-delivered punch in the jaw. In spite of himself and the annoyance of his sisters, who kept popping in and out, George got drawn in as a contender for Alice. Fumbles plagued the Eagles throughout the game, losing the ball on four occasions. Each team had three intercepted passes in the hard-fought contest. Victory In 27-27 Tie Good defensive power and speed in the running department led the Eagles to a 39-14 win over crosstown rival, Roosevelt-Wilson. Grabbing a commanding lead and holding the Morgantown Mohigans off until the final quarter, the Eagles rolled to a smashing 41-26 Big-Ten Conference triumph. The Eagle squad looked good in the contest, hitting hard and moving the ball well. The Victory Eagles hiked their record to a 7-0-1, as they defeated the Summersville Grizzlies 34-13 at Hite Field. 112 Eagles Wounded In Flight To Top Relying almost entirely on a bruising ground attack, The Buckhannon Buckanneers assured themselves of a Class AAA playoff by toppling the Victory Eagles 13-7. Two first-half fumbles, occurring just shy of the goal line proved very costly to Victory. The Victory Eagles maintained their dominance over archrival Washington Irving by downing the Hilloppers 45-18 in their annual classic. I wondered why It left familiar things behind. A hand caught mine ... I paid no mind. The stranger never once did say Just what had brought him on my way. On we went, and some afraid I wished I hadn't come, but stayed. All the friends that I once knew Took a road named Goodbye too. There were no two roads just the same Though all were called Goodbye by name. The road went on; we went on too. And I was sad, for then I knew That never could I be the same Having walked down Goodbye Lane. And though I couldn't understand We walked together hand in hand. We said no words, but just walked on, I thought of things now past and gone. I thought of games I'd lost and won, I thought of all the things I d done, I thought of those I loved and cared. Of times we’d had, of things we'd shared. I thought of those I d come to know. Just knowing them — they'd helped me so. I thought of things, of tears I d shed . . . Those same things now brought smiles instead. The tasks I d done, those left to do, I wondered how I'd make it through When something inside seems to say, ' The best you can from day to day. The way was rough; I knew the score. It never ends . . . there’s always more. But now I know that all in all Each thing in its own place will fall. I thought of all the happy days, The sad ones now just seemed a haze. And in a flash I came to see How much the past had meant to me. We walked along — I wondered where The future led and what was there. The past still echoed from behind I was its, and it was mine. But in my heart was still a fear. And in my eye a shining tear; Yet on my face there was a smile, And we walked forward all the while. I walked along the road Goodbye. I looked back once ... I heaved a sigh. Then I remembered at my side — My silent, but my constant guide. The stranger s hand I felt in mine. I Ipoked into his face this time. I asked his name — he turned just so. He smiled and said, I'm called Hello. ' Gold Medallion Book of Design Volume VI 136
