By the dedication of the 1963 Optic to Miss Ernst, we, the Class of 1963, wish to express our appreciation for her guidance .... patience .... and understanding. If it were not for Miss Ernst, few of us would be fully aware of the Nobel Prize winners, the importance of good manners, and the value of a good book. With the dedication of this yearbook, we extend our best wishes to Miss Ernst for her continued success. 8

Dedication WEST VIRGINIA . . . from a Mountain Wilderness to an Industrial Empire . . . stands on the doorstep of a second century with a future built around space age advancements revealed within the State. West Virginia is now the scene of some of the world's most advanced radio astronomy study. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank, West Virginia, is a major national center dedicated to the study of space and the universe. In a sense West Virginia has grown from the vast terrain of a mountainous wilderness to a picturesque setting of industrial, cultural, and thriving valleys. Its people have sensed this movement from a period of exploration in the hills to one of the same in the universe. A progressive spirit has characterized this movement and has found our State in the position of seeking the most solid orbit of travel. By the dedication of the 1963 Optic to our beloved State, West Virginia, the journalism staff of Victory High School joins with all West Virginians in saluting our State during her 100th Anniversary Celebration. 7 1863-1963
