Pr e s ent mg, I Victory High School Clarksburg, West Virginia 1 Foreword The Optic staff extends their sincere invitation to you to review the memories— both happy and sad—of this past year in the '63 Optic—especially the Seniors who have struggled endlessly in their upward climb to graduation. They will remember 1963 and Victory's undefeated football team—the Senior Christmas party—the Prom—and all the events that make being a Senior just marvelous. Through this book we have endeavored to bring to life many of the year's occurrences. We have planned the Optic for each of you and your special interests. All this would not have been possible without the cooperation and perseverance of the staff. I would like at this time to thank Mrs. Noah, the staff, and Jo Ann Second, our artist, for a rewarding year. 4 Susie Ferrando, Editor ALMA MATER Hail, Alma Mater Hail, hail to thee Dear in our memories You'll always be Within Victory's portals Friendship so loyal, so true Hail, dear old Victory, hail, hail to you All through the years Your name will be Symbol of honor and loyalty Deep our devotion to friends So faithful, so true Hail, Victory High School; hail, hail to you. CREED OF VICTORY HIGH SCHOOL We, the students of Victory High School, pledge ourselves to love our school, to obey its regulations, to uphold its ideals, to support its code of morals, and respect and maintain its good name. To honor our parents, and obey the laws of our state and nation. To respect and be courteous to our principal, teachers, and fellow students. To be loyal to our school in thought, word, and deed, and to give her always of our best efforts. To use every opportuntiy to foster ideal school citizenship. 6 Dedication WEST VIRGINIA . . . from a Mountain Wilderness to an Industrial Empire . . . stands on the doorstep of a second century with a future built around space age advancements revealed within the State. West Virginia is now the scene of some of the world's most advanced radio astronomy study. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank, West Virginia, is a major national center dedicated to the study of space and the universe. In a sense West Virginia has grown from the vast terrain of a mountainous wilderness to a picturesque setting of industrial, cultural, and thriving valleys. Its people have sensed this movement from a period of exploration in the hills to one of the same in the universe. A progressive spirit has characterized this movement and has found our State in the position of seeking the most solid orbit of travel. By the dedication of the 1963 Optic to our beloved State, West Virginia, the journalism staff of Victory High School joins with all West Virginians in saluting our State during her 100th Anniversary Celebration. 7 1863-1963 By the dedication of the 1963 Optic to Miss Ernst, we, the Class of 1963, wish to express our appreciation for her guidance .... patience .... and understanding. If it were not for Miss Ernst, few of us would be fully aware of the Nobel Prize winners, the importance of good manners, and the value of a good book. With the dedication of this yearbook, we extend our best wishes to Miss Ernst for her continued success. 8 Principal’s Message During your three years at Victory we have endeavored to help you develop the following imperative needs for the youth of today. 1. Proper attitudes: 2. Knowledge of a citizen's rights and duties: 3. Mental and physical fitness: 4. Intelligent consumer participation: 5. Scientific method of thinking: 6. Good human relationships: 7. Worthwhile leisure time activities: 8. Aesthetic appreciation: 9. Preparation for family living: 10. Opportunity to participate in good citizenship activities, and 11. To develop saleable skills. In order to accomplish this aim, it was necessary to teach you a lot more than pure book learning. The opportunity to participate in clubs and extracurricular activities was needed and also the general development of the Victory Spirit through the association with your fellow students, faculty, and community activities was a necessity. What you do in the future will determine how well we have done our job. We have faith in our students. 9 In Appreciation MR. HOLDEN MRS. MEREDITH MR. Just about everybody listens to music on TV, radio, movies, or records. And, central to the appreciation and understanding of music is music performance. The student who has learned to play an instrument will always enjoy music more than if he had not. The good band performs superior music in order to give its members a worthwhile musical heritage. The band's purpose is not only to serve the school and community spirit, but also to furnish the student with an invaluable experience. The disciplines of a good marching band are similar to those acquired in athletics. Both develop co-ordination, cooperation, teamwork, and self-discipline to a degree not possible in academic subjects. The band is no haven for a lazy student. It demands and develops concentration so essential to success in any field of endeavor. Victory Eagles Big Ten and City Champs The Victory Eagles football team completed a very fine season of play this year. The Eagles went undefeated with a record of ten wins and no losses. Opening the year's play of football was the Notre Dame game on September 6. We slipped by the Irish in that game with a narrow margin of two points. The big birds moved on to take victories from Elkins, Richwood, Weston, and West Fairmont. With each new game the margin between the scores of the Eagles and their opponents became larger — a sign of improvement. Roosevelt-Wilson, Morgantown, Shinnston, and Buckhannon were also handed upsets later on by the high flying Eagles. The season came to a climax with Victory taking the win from Washington-lrving 34-0. We are proud of our team and coaches, Mr. John Mazzei and Mr. Don Vincent. Particularly fine play was shown on the part of Connor Thompson, Roger Johnson, Blaine Devericks, Tom Findley, and Jerry Losh, but each victory was a team victory, as a team is no better than its weakest man. Victory is looking forward to another successful season next year. Thanks, Eagles, for a job well done. Kenny Lilly, Shurl Montgomery, Steve Goolie, Tom Faculty vs. Varsity One of the most unusual games of basketball ever to be played at Victory High School took place in the school gym, on Fri., March 15. It featured two of the area's outstanding teams, the VHS Faculty and the VHS varsity, who gave their fans a taste of a truly different type of basketball. Starting at center was Hot Rod Simmons, the sensation of the cork floor. Other greats of the gamp starring for the Faculty were Mazzei, Mearns, Bennett, Bowers, Ritter, and Vincent. Coach Van Horn accredited the Faculty's score to the highly unusual defense. Some of the plays demonstrated by both teams were entirely new to the rule books and referee, Miss Romine.
