After two weeks’ practice, the Mazzeimen showed signs of a good season by downing the Weston Minutemen 20-0. They gained another mark on the win column when they defeated the strong Elkins eleven. The comeback in the second half proved to all that Victory was a team to watch constantly. In 1960 Victory took on two new teams, Point Pleasant and Richwood. Meeting the latter on Sept. 23, the West-enders won easily. The tense scoring battle between Point Pleasant and the Eagles finally found our boys on top 32-27. The next victim to fall prey to us was Fairmont West. The outcome didn’t look too good until the offense and defense began to click in the second half. Supporting a 5-0 record, the Eagles met a team with an identical tally—R-W. The City Championship trophy was on the way to 5 Adamston because of the combined efforts of all members of our squad. R-W fell 18-12. The Associated Press rated Victory as the top school in the Big Ten as a result of this win. The next two games were fatal to the Eagles. In an off-night game the Shinnston Spartons defeated the Victory eleven 33-19. The following week Weir High, State AAA champs, outscored our boys 48-13. To get back in the winning column Victory beat Buckhannon 14-6. On a very wet November 11, 1960, the “Mighty” Eagles met and tromped the Washington Irving Hilltoppers 20-0. This win brought the Sam V. Mazzei trophy back where it belongs—in Victory. The defeat of W. I. climaxed the season for the squad. Their excellent record—8-2 will be remembered for many years to come.
