Paul Smith. 17. a senior having been manager for three years: Head Coach “Doc Hutson; Dave Ferrando, 16, a junior, playing guard; Lonnie Swiger. 17. a junior, playing center: Eugene DeFran-eeschi, 17. a senior, also playing center; Dave Thompson. 17. a junior, playing guard; Carl Tenda. 16. a junior, acting as forward; Ass’t Coach Charles Brummage: Carl Norman. 15. sophomore, in his first year as manager. HUTSON Coach “Doc Hutson, with his teams in both football and basketball have made a name for themselves this year as every year in the past. “Doc” has been at Victory since 1939. continuing to mold high school boys into real players. To him we extend our deepest congratulations for the swell coach he has been for the last nine years. CAPTAIN JOHNSON “Eronco” Johnson as he was known to the fans this year is a three-year letterman in three sports—basketball, baseball, and football. He received recognitions on the all-city, all-valley, and all-state teams in both basketball and football. Bob has also received several offers from colleges and he plans to continue his athletic career in one of them. BRUMMAGE “Coach” Brummage. who has returned to Victory after a short vacation, has made himself a permanent part of the old high school. He is now assistant coach and history teacher. He also made quite a name for himself when he was in college. He is often called “Little but Mighty.”

VICTORY OPTIC 1948 PAGE TWENTY-NINE CO-CAPTAIN NEWBROUGH Co-Captain Newbrough, a three year letter-man, captured the center position on the all-state second team; also the big-nine and all-city title of Clarksburg. Bobby has received several offers for scholarships to different colleges and by his excellent reputation as a player we hope he will continue his education, also, his football career. Basketball 48 The Victory Eagles completed their cage season with only five losses compared with 14 wins. They were defeated only by Morgantown, Buckhannon. East Fairmont. Elkins, and Washington Irving. The Hutsonmen met Mannington in the season opener to conquer them, 54 to 37. On January the second the Hutson quint met East Fairmont there to conquer 54-49. At Carmichael Auditorium the Shinnston Spartans met Doc’s boys to go down for another defeat. 55-47. In the second Spartan. Eagles again won by a score of 63-40. Morgantown High School held Victory in the first contest to win 44-48. In the second contest, however, the Eagles revengeful of their first defeat. downed the Clydemen 61-42. An inter-city rival, Roosevelt - Wilson High School lost two cage tilts to our Eagles. The first score was 40-28. The second held 45-37. Buckhannon-Upshur took the first of two contests but dropped the latter to Victory 63-41. The score of he first game was 37-42. Victory carried Weston High School for two losses as they racked up, in the first, 72 points to the opposition’s 43, and in the second. 69 points to the opposition’s 34. The Eagles won a single of two contests from Washington Irving winning the first 42-40 and losing the second, 37-39. The “stonewall.” as he was called, played outstanding football at the tackle position during the seasons of 45, 46, 47. He was elected to the all Big Ten Team of 47. He is outstanding in the school as a member of the student council and is very popular among the students. He plans to continue his football career in college. CO-CAPTAIN CARBACCIO Pigskin Parade Finishing a very successful season on the gridiron this year, the Eagles cleared away seven victories to two losses. Bob Johnson, of the Hutson Pigskin Eleven, came through with a grand total of 114 points during the season. Bob Newbrough, also of the home squad, earned a certificate for being placed on the second All-State team. Earlier in the season, players from all over the state voted for their choice and Newbrough was placed on the First All-State Team player s poll .
