VICTORIAN 70 official year of 1969 - 70 Victoria Composite High School Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Let no one think that being a leader is easy. Often it is a lonely and difficult business. Life always gets harder toward the summit, and cold increases, the responsibility increases and there is never any guarantee of success. But the rewards are enormous for those who will strike for the summit, who will take the risks; dare the unknown. Tribute Page Three people deserve this tribute for their services to students and teachers at Victoria Com¬ posite. A paragraph is insufficient to sum up their individual contributions-each in his or her own way, made our school a better place in which to learn and teach. Thank you. G. Sm ith J. Milner MRS. BESSIE LAMBERT Integrity, dedication, vitality, modesty, courage, compassion; the Professional Teacher, Mrs. Lambert. She worked tirelessly — in the classroom with her students; in staff meetings with her peers; in and out of school with all of us who needed her. More than a pedagogue, she is a gracious lady. Mrs. Lambert has been, and is, an inspira¬ tion to us all. We miss you Mrs. Lambert. MISS JEAN McLACGEN Anyone who has played a part in our school ' s affairs either as a student or a teacher must have been impressed by Miss Jeanie McLaggen ' s work. Few academic students have not at one time or another passed through her hands. She will be long remembered for her vigorous speeches and for her Latin and French classes. Miss McLaggen will be forever missed at Vic and our sin¬ cere wishes accompany her into retirement. MR. FRED DANIELS Mr. Daniels has been our Business Manager at Vic. Comp, since August of 1966. He scrupu¬ lously managed our affairs --always defending the students position ahead of administrative expedience. After leaving the army with the rank of Major-second in command of the Edmon¬ ton Service Battalion he became Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Education at the U. of A. Mr. Daniels leaves Vic in September to live in Hampshire England. Good luck, Mr. Dani¬ els, and a fond good-bye. 4 MR. J. T. KARPOFF Principal MR. D.F. TERRIFF First Asst. Principal MR. A.W. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly clearly; and listen to others, even the dull ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain bitter; for always there will be greater lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high deals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue lonliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. FOUND IN OLD SAINT PAUL’S CHURCH, BALTIMORE; DATED 1692 ‘Sponsored by A W Drive-Ins of Edmonton’ ‘Where the Good Food Is’. Principal’s Message J. T. KARPOFF Only a few short months ago we were at the threshold of a new school year, one that held many promises. To some of you these promises have been fulfilled and you are ready to embark on a wider field of activity- either to higher learning or to the world of business. To others, this year has been one of promises unfilled and you may tend to blame us, the older generation, for your frustrations. I cannot give answers to all your problems but I have some advice, based on my knowledge and years of association with your generation that I would like to give you. You have the opportunity to develop into the best generation ever to be born into this world. Generations before you have worked to give you the world that can provide this opportunity. My generation has provided money to give you the fine schools, the good teaching, and a comfortable way of life. In doing this we may have lost sight of some of the ideals we all seek and perhaps we have placed too much value on material things. The miracle is that we have accomplished so much, not that we have made mistakes. We are not saying that the world is perfect, but we are saying that it is the best we have been able to evolve. Now it is your turn; you may, on the basis of our experiences, be able to evolve a much better one. However, you must first learn that you can only achieve the worthwhile through cooperation, mutual selfrespect, and responsibility. You must show us that you can run your own affairs smoothly. You must show us that you can take the blame for your own failures. Then, we would be perfectly willing to see you take over this world and run it. But you must first earn that right. 66 i , N Reach For The Top David Oyen A nton Yereniuk Won the first game against St. Joes. So, after thinking about it for a long time I finally came to the conclusion that the best way to define this year was one of transition and uncertainty. That is, the year was one in which a lot of changes were in process and nobody could really say what the end product of these changes was going to be. And this in turn, created the un¬ certainty and confusion of the year which I ' m sure was evident to everyone. For in¬ stance, there was the issue of open campus which seemed to be the prevalent topic of conversation throughout the whole school. Everybody was wondering if and when we were going to have such a system. And although we still really haven ' t, we have moved towards that system and likely will have it in the near future. And, this mood of transition and uncertainty was not just present in the school. It was throughout the whole world, on a larger and greater scale, although. But hope¬ fully, these issues will be solved in the near future for just one reason--they have to. And that is going to be the job of the students of today, whether we like it or not. How are we going to do this? Well, the best answer I can give to that question is a line from a song I heard a while ago:-- COME ON, LET’S WORK TOGETHER.
