OUR PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE My congratulations to the Victorian staff and greetings to all. As the year draws to a close I would like to examine some of the qualities which have impressed me at this school. Our fine teachers and facilities have made possible an academic excellence which is the main justifica¬ tion for any school. The challenge of learning, the routine of homework and the strain of examinations are necessary requirements for the achievements of academic goals, and it is to those who fully use their abilities that the rewards of this world are accorded. Society rules that certain standards of behavior are accepted by educated people, and that good conduct is an es¬ sential part of greatness. We have, therefore, established among our stu¬ dents standards of promptness, ac¬ curacy, dress, manners, and speech, as well as a respect for truth and self- discipline. It is especially important that the qualities of friendliness and individu¬ alism are not lost in the pursuit of ef¬ ficiency in a large school. A variety of clubs and services has provided an opportunity for each to find a place in the larger group. Student government, athletics, fine arts, counselling services, and especially considerate teachers and students have all played their part. Nihil est tarn populare quam bonitas (Our Latin students would translate, Nothing is so popular as kindness. ) I firmly believe that this is the essence of school spirit. Four things a man must learn to do If he would make his record true: To think without confusion clearly; To love his fellow men sincerely; To act from honest motives purely: To trust in God and Heaven securely. I am sincerely proud that my staff and students excel in those qualities which are a measure of greatness. A fond farewell to those who leave --go forth, confident in the knowledge that you are a Vicite! 7
