TO VIC.... HER TEACHERS.... 2 HER STUDENTS 3 HER ACADEMIC LIFE.... 4 HER FACILITIES 5 •V1V L, v v ■’■ ' . . .,• V . - ' ' • . f 6 OUR PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE My congratulations to the Victorian staff and greetings to all. As the year draws to a close I would like to examine some of the qualities which have impressed me at this school. Our fine teachers and facilities have made possible an academic excellence which is the main justifica¬ tion for any school. The challenge of learning, the routine of homework and the strain of examinations are necessary requirements for the achievements of academic goals, and it is to those who fully use their abilities that the rewards of this world are accorded. Society rules that certain standards of behavior are accepted by educated people, and that good conduct is an es¬ sential part of greatness. We have, therefore, established among our stu¬ dents standards of promptness, ac¬ curacy, dress, manners, and speech, as well as a respect for truth and self- discipline. It is especially important that the qualities of friendliness and individu¬ alism are not lost in the pursuit of ef¬ ficiency in a large school. A variety of clubs and services has provided an opportunity for each to find a place in the larger group. Student government, athletics, fine arts, counselling services, and especially considerate teachers and students have all played their part. Nihil est tarn populare quam bonitas (Our Latin students would translate, Nothing is so popular as kindness. ) I firmly believe that this is the essence of school spirit. Four things a man must learn to do If he would make his record true: To think without confusion clearly; To love his fellow men sincerely; To act from honest motives purely: To trust in God and Heaven securely. I am sincerely proud that my staff and students excel in those qualities which are a measure of greatness. A fond farewell to those who leave --go forth, confident in the knowledge that you are a Vicite! 7 IN MEMORIAM MISS I. G. SEMANS The death of Miss I. G. SPECIAL Years may. wipe out many things But this they wipe out never - The memory of these happy days When we were all together. GRADE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 1 964-65 Bruce Maclennan This year 1964 - 65, we celebrated the joint graduation exercises of the Victoria Composite and Victoria Vovational High Schools. Next year the two schools will be combined. Our Grad was thus a unique oc¬ casion, since it marked the end of an era - the end of the old Vic Comp., and the beginning of the new Victoria Composite High School. As a result of this amalgamation, those interests and goals of the entire campus have been brought together. During our past years at Vic , we have been fortunate in having received the guidance of Victoria’s fine staff. In addition to this we have made many friends who we shall never forget, and have gathered memories which will always remain with us. Some of us may feel that this is the end of the road, but truly it is the Commencement , the beginning of a new life. We realize that we are now on our own, ready to do our best in whatever we attempt. With greater understanding we can now quote Longfellow: The heights by great men reached and kept Were not attained by sudden flight But they, while their companions slept Were toiling upward in the night. - Longfellow VALEDICTORY Graduation has arrived once more and once again those who have reached this point regard it as a culmination of a part of their lives. Because Graduation has been asso¬ ciated with thoughts of separation not only from friends but also separation from a protective atmosphere we Grad- uands often experience a little sadness on this occasion. But looking at graduation and the years spent at Vic from another point of view 7 we see that high school is a plateau on our way to the summit of the mountain of success. We are mountaineers striving to reach a goal . In order to reach the peak of success one must advance a step at a time and we the Graduands are just about to advance to another foothold and come one step closer to achieving this goal.. Before we ascend into the unknown let us reflect upon our high school years and see how Vic has prepared us to contend with the problems that we shall face as we climb the cliff of later-life. The first essentials of mountain¬ eering are courage and conditioning. i Our courage has been bred into us by our parents. They gave us the courage to leave home for the first time when we entered grade one and in our years at Vic they gave us the courage to extend our horizons and to make our decisions as to which route we would follow in yder to attain our desired destination. Our parents have helped us with love and affection; our teachers at Vic have helped us with knowledge and under¬ standing. Now that we are ready to leave this plateau of learning in life we can feel confident that the courage which enables us to advance higher has been reinforced and that we tue in exellent condition for the long climb ahead. Every mountaineering party needs a guide to ensure its safety and to aid in its progress. We have been fortunate here at Vic to have had competent guides who are willing to devote their time and talent in not only leading us part way toward our goal but in giving us valuable information which will help us in our later journey. A climber needs special equipment to ensure his safe and successful scaling of the mountain. One of the essentials is a map. By definition a map is a sketch or a plan and each Vic student by the time he is finished grade 12 has been assisted in developing such a plan of his ascent to the pinnacle of his life. Because Vic has been so interested in each of its students it has provided us with excellent counsellors. These people have helped us chart the most probable route which will ensure our success. Here we find our direction and means of ascent beginning to differ as we each start to follow our own route to the top. Another necessary part of a mountaineer ' s gear is a compass. Vic has acted as a compass to its graduands. It has shown us many different fields of endeavor both academic and social in which ' we might participate. The extra curricular activities offered by Vic have given us an exellent opportunity not only to learn new skills but also to learn how to communicate and cooperate more easily with others. Like the mountaineer who must be depended upon and who must also learn to depend upon others w e, through participating have learned to carry responsibility and be reliable. SHARON KOBIE, Vol 4 rt orion The most important part of a mountaineer ' s outfit is the rope for it binds all the climbers together and keeps them from straying or falling. What was the rope that has held us together for the past three years? I be¬ lieve that this rope was made of two materials. The first was a knowledge that each of us was striving for the same common goal the successful termination of high school which would see us ready to climb up to new adventures and broader horizons. The second was Vic itself. Feeling that we belong to such a fine school and knowing that each of us had an obligation to fulfill in order to maintain the enthusiasm of good school spirit caused us to work together as a good mountaineering team and to make this trek a truly worth-while exp eri¬ ence . The last part of the equipment is the boots. These enable the mountaineer to step forth confidently. Three years of learning at Vic have provided us with the basic essentials in preparation for our expedition into adult life. If we use these ideas that we have absorbed we will be able to leave the plateau on which Vic is situated and confidently set our sights on the highest point of our individual achievement. Now we may ask the question what are the motives of the mountaineer? Here we Graduands must dif¬ fer from the actual climbers who scale the peaks of the world. To them it is the climbing itself that is important the means rather than the end. To us our climbing pro¬ vides the exitement in our lives but the end result is the most important of all. If we reach the top we know our lives have been a success. Vic has tried to give us the in - centive to strive until we reach our ultimate destination. Vic has provided us with the conditioning the guides and the equipment. From now on it is up to us to utilize our every benefit and to make it work in our favor in order to help us reach our goal - the top of the mountain of success . However let us not think there is only one mountain only one road and only one goal for everyone. If each person achieves what he himself wants in life he is a success in his own eyes and that is the most important accomplish- ment of all. But the morals and laws by which he governs himself on the way to the top are passed on to him by those with whom he associates. In the past three or four years we have had a wonderful association with teachers as well as with fellow students. What we have learned from them will help us in establishing the code that we will follow as we scale our mountain. When finally we reach the summit may we look back and say Thank you Vic. Thank you for affording to us the wonderful oppor¬ tunities that we have had to become better suited for our journey to the top of the mountain our own individual mountain of happiness and success. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As the year draws to a close, another step in our educational endeav¬ ors is completed. For myself and my fellow graduands it is a sad step mark¬ ing the end of our days at Vic. It means saying good-bye to all of the good things we have come to know at our school. For those who will be returning next year I hope it has been a preparation for even more enjoyable experiences in their high school life. Looking back and evaluating the past year from the viewpoint of the Stu¬ dent Union, I would say that it has been a successful year. The Fine Arts Department certainly deserves the thanks of the Students ' Union for another fine year. The year play, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST was an outstanding accom¬ plishment, both financially and aestheti¬ cally. The Choir and the band, both under excellent directing, gave much support to social and athletic functions and generally were again a credit to the school. On the social scene our success went from good to bad. The Assem¬ blies ' Board presented two entertaining skits and many noon hour sock hops and pep rallies which were favoured with good attendance. Our first dance of the year, REDMEN ' S RENDEZVOUS, met with such success that we began to look ahead quite optimistically. These hopes were somewhat dampened at Christmas when attendance at SNOWFLAKE SWIRL was considerably lower, and were com¬ pletely doused in March when we were forced to cancel our spring dance be¬ cause of lack of support. Looking on the brighter side again, our clubs generally prospered and several, par¬ ticularly the Red Cross Club, had ex¬ ceptional years. In the field of sports our accom¬ plishments again ranged to both ends of the scale. Both senior and junior basketball teams brought home city championships. The swimming pool was constantly busy either with the inter-school team or instructional classes. Girls and boys houseleagues under enthusiastic leadership had ac¬ tive years, and the newly formed gym¬ nastic club provided excellent enter¬ tainment at school functions. On the other hand the senior football team had a surprisingly bad year and girls ' inter-school teams had to struggle to find enough girls to fill their teams. All of these activities were made possible only through the combined efforts of many people. I would like to thank the supervising teachers for their time and patience and I would like to thank the room reps, and mem¬ bers of the executive for a job well done. I would also like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Sheppard, Stu¬ dents ' Union adviser, who, through his counsel and help, made my job much easier. Last but not least I thank you, the student body, for sup¬ porting the school functions. Looking ahead to next year one can see many possible problems in connection with the joining of Victoria Composite and Victoria Vocational. I hope that the returning students will collectively throw their shoulders to the wheel in order to make the transi¬ tion smoothly and, above all, to carry on the old Vic traditions. To all of you I wish the best of luck in all your undertakings and may our paths cross often in the future. Michael G. A hectic week of shoe shining, sock hopping, and pennant selling led up to the major event of the week, SNOWFLAKE SWIRL , at which Dobie Edmunds was selected from the five contestants pictured below, and crowned the new Miss Redmen. The other contestants were (left to right): Laurie Springham, Barbara Reid, Colleen McLeod, and Diane Aspeslet. 96 97 Betty Flagler Bill Clarke The highest awards in the school are the Citizenship Awards. Many of our teams fared well, and all exhibited true sportsmanship, a fact of which all Vicites should be proud. The football season started off with a bang and the Senior Redmen, picked as the team to beat, gave all they had to produce a winner; but all was not enough as was evident throughout the season. Several key injuries proved costly to the team as it skidded from first to fifth position in the standings. Thus, we were not successful in our bid to unseat the de¬ fending champions--St. Mary ' s Angels. In Junior action, the Redmen finished in third spot, only three points behind the pace-setting Jasper Place Rebels. The coming of winter also saw the coming of the boys ' basketball season and Coaches Baker and Webb soon got the ball rolling. The Seniors had tremendous success throughout the season, sporting a ten win no loss record to capture the Edmonton Boys ' Senior Championship. The last game of the schedule proved to be the biggest for Vic, as they preserved their un¬ beaten record by defeating their nearest rivals, the Bonnie Doon Lancers. The Junior Basketball team also had a great season. Early in the schedule they appeared to be strong contenders for the league title. They proved they were so in the final tournament by defeating Queen Elizabeth, previously unbeaten Ross Sheppard, and in the biggest game of them all, the McNally Tigers. This made them the undisputed City Junior Champions. At the time of writing, the swim team is engaged in preparation for its annual high school meet and the track team is about to begin its annual fat-removing campaign. Congratulations to all coaches, players, and fans on a fine athletic year. May the name of Vic continue to be respected and feared in all athletic endeavors. -Ron Howden REDMEN ON THE WARPATH Players await the chance to play 1 Bob Robinson breaks away from one of many tackles. The record was previously held by his brother and former untouchable , Doug, who had 45 points. Congratulations to Dick and the whole team! 0n Educate ton “Let no youth have any anxiety about the upshot of his education, whatever the line of it may be. If he keeps faithfully busy each hour of the working day, he may safely leave the final result to itself. He can, with perfect certainty, count on waking up some fine morning to find himself one of the competent ones of his generation, in whatever pursuit he may have singled out. Silently, between all the details of his business, the POWER of JUDGING in all that class of matter will have built itself up within him as a possession that will never pass away. Young people should know this truth in advance. The ignorance of it has probably engendered more discouragement and faintheartedness in youths embarking on arduous careers than all other causes put together.” William James, Psychologist wom-n we tj-riM-fri es. _ v-f r m a o YOUR INVESTOR.OWNED GAS UTILITY SERVING ALBERTANS SINCE 1923 108 CHEERLEADERS BACK ROW: Diane Hicks, Dawn Ford, Maureen Hannon, Bonnie Mclennan, Colleen McLeod. In the fall, the new physical education teachers. Miss Niewchas and Miss Hawryluk, organized the volleyball teams. The girls were very enthusiastic and practised hard but, unfortunately, they were un¬ able to beat the excellent teams from Bonnie Doon and Ross Shep. Shortly after Christmas, try-outs began for the junior and senior basketball teams. The senior team, coached by Miss Kirstein, placed second, be¬ hind Bonnie Doon, in their section. They met Eastglen in the semifinals, but were unable to beat them. The junior team, coached by Miss Niewchas, practised very hard, but they were unable to finish in the finals. At the present time the swim team is practising very hard for the coming competition. In two meets they have beaten McNally and Ross Shep. Next week they will meet J. P. and the winners in each event will go on to the finals at the University. The badminton team has just been chosen and they will be meeting their opponents in a few weeks. Conditioning for the girls ' track and field team will start next week and outside training will start as soon as the grounds are in suitable condition.
