U ! 3 •Hi THE DEDICATION — “The old order changeth yielding place to new” —Tennyson It is to the “old and to the new that we dedicate this book. Victorian decorum guided the designers who conceived and built Edmonton ' s proud, new high school, for two handsome entrances were provided; and that there be no misunderstanding, over one entrance was hung a slightly embellished stone plaque with the word GIRLS deeply engraved and over the other, another with BOYS as deeply engraved. And so in September 1911, Principal L. S. Carr and his staff of five welcomed some 75 boys and 75 girls, who with grim propriety entered through their respective doors—Edmonton ' s brand new Victoria High School. Then came the long interim during which our school ' s destiny was guided by a succession of principals; Dr. Carpenter, Mr. Fuller, Mr. Hicks, and Mr. McFarland. By 1930 the school staff num¬ bered twenty, and the school population had increased proportionally. Vic was bursting at sills, joints and rafters. At that time Miss Teskey, a member of the staff, wrote, One suggested solution is that a group of high school buildings be placed on or adjacent to the grounds of the present Victoria High School, this grouping to afford high school students a wide range of choice in he courses offered. However, the dingy years of the depression and a war of vast proportions were to intervene. Not until the second great war was over, did the Edmonton Public School Board and its superintendent of schools, Mr. Ross Sheppard, feel free to promote the construction of Victoria Composite. After travelling widely to study composite schools elsewhere, Mr. Sheppard threw himself into the project with sincere, even excited devotion. Victoria Composite is the Ross Sheppard High School in fact—if not in name. And now ! Now the survivors of the 75 boys and 75 girls are grandfathers and grandmothers. Now the BOYS plaque hangs forlorn, his mate gone. Now again Victoria is bursting at the sills, joints and rafters. A new principal guides us, one as sincere, courageous, and wise as any who went before, a man who is an alumnus of the school he administers. At the moment of writing, the purge of progress is about to remove the once proud Victoria High School; and we see the playground scar¬ red as workmen prepare for the erection of a vast addition to our school. Now another class, the fiftieth to graduate from our school, is soon to leave us, and so again we dedicate your year book to— What is old and what is new. And to you, our class of ’62. 1 PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE To the majority of you, June 1962 marks the culmination of your high school education. As a member of the graduating class you have reached a crossroad as you bid goodbye to fellow students, the staff and the school. Only a small part of your road lies behind you; the rest is ahead. As you look back over what has seemed to be a somewhat difficult journey, your mem¬ ories will be tinged with regret as well as pleasure. Perhaps you regret not having used full horsepower and your best wheels. However, no doubt Vic will bring happy recollections too of friendships, noisy corridors, busy classrooms, athletic contests, lit assemblies, awards night, graduation exercises, the hush of the examination room, and favourite teachers. When you turn your eyes to peer down the road ahead, you feel a sense of past accom¬ plishment, a realized ambition and a confidence of being prepared to meet new challenges that reach out before you. Your life in the senior high school has developed resources that will for¬ tify and sustain you, habits that will make for happy and successful living, and skills that will enhance your usefulness with the passing miles. May it be so! Your goal may be away in the beyond, but never give up striving to reach it. The hard¬ ships which you endure and overcome en route are character builders which give you strength to forge ahead. Never for a moment lose your highest ideals, for these like road maps are there to guide your progress. If it is your aim to continue your education at the university or to upgrade some skill learned at high school, you can be assured that your opportunities will multiply with each milestone passed. I trust that you will realize your fondest dreams on the highways of the future and have the optimism and determination expressed by these words of Emerson: So nigh is grandeur to our dust, So near is God to man. When duly whispers low, “Thou must,” The youth replies, “I can.” C. M. Hollingsworth. 2 — vn rj X i;9S jrAn ? . M9 O ■ ? ADMINISTRATION WADDELL, Mr. W. S. I now see why the sophomores and seniors burst into gales of laugh¬ ter when a group of frosh walked down the halls looking for a room number that was non-existent in that part of the school. Now, we are seniors, who upon reaching the goal of Grade XII education, are graduating. We have greatly matured in our years at high school. The excellent teaching staff at Vic has taught us well. Through their constant attention, we are now able to move on into higher learning or hold jobs in today ' s busy world. The administrative staff deserve much praise. They have helped us through our problems and carefully guided us to this end result: graduation. To these two groups go our heartiest thanks. We cannot overlook the wonderful facilities that Vic provides—both educational and recreational. These undoubtedly have contributed to our success in high school. The Grads of ' 62 are indeed fortunate to have attended Victoria Composite High School. In closing, I would like to say two things: To the Grads—All the success and happiness in the world. To the Freshmen and Sophomores—Never say die! 14 VALEDICTORY by BARBARA FLAGLER There are moments in life which are remem¬ bered and looked back upon fondly for many years. I am sure that this night will be filled with treasured memories for all of us. For such a meaningful occasion, I feel deeply honoured to have been chosen to give the valedictory; to say, on behalf of so many, farewell. For this IS farewell—to Vic, to our teachers and to many of our friends. But a farewell is not an ending, it is a hope that Vic will continue to be a truly great school, a wish that our teach¬ ers will have happiness always, and a prayer that our friends will find success in the years to come. Graduations, like a farewell, is not an end, but a beginning. Plutarch said, When men are arrived at the goal, they should not turn back. We have achieved a goal by completing the first phase of our educ ation; but this is not the time to stop planning and dreaming for the future. This is our chance to make our lives worthwhile, to make our teachers proud to know that we are from Vic. These teachers have always given unselfishly of their time, their abilities, and their under¬ standing, much as a gardener would tirelessly devote himself to growing strong, healthy trees. It is a well-known fact that he who plants trees benefits a future age. Our teachers have planted in us many unforgettable ideas of honesty and sincerity as well as the desire to learn. Before a tree can grow properly, the roots must develop and find security. Our parents, and the wonderful influence of our homes, have given us a sturdy basis on which to grow to maturity. A young tree entering o world filled with trees of all ages and descriptions, needs sunshine and food and is expected to compete for a place to grow among thousands of other trees. So do we, as young people, need sunshine, nourishment, friendship and respect. The sunlight has shone brightly at Vic; we have had innumerable happy times together. The nourishment has been of the best quality; we have received a good education academically, socially, and athletically. Friend¬ ship has been of the finest kind—probably finer than any we will find again. The respect for our rights and abilities by the whole staff as well as our fellow students has given us confidence to meet the many strange people and situations we are soon to encounter. As the tree matures, it grows steadily more lovely and more stately. Although it bears thousands more leaves than it once did, though it appears much larger than before, the core remains deep within the trunk of the tree. We have been given a core, for Vic has taught us loyalty, honesty, sincerity, the value of good sportsmanship, the ability to lead or to follow . . . the way to be a real person. The tree is depend¬ ent on its core for healthy growth; the splendour of the tree is slowly ruined if the core rots. We, too, must depend on those basic but wonderful ideals to have happy, successful, and beautiful lives. Our lives lie before us in a broad, bright, promising expanse. The future is uncertain, it is hidden even from us who will make it. As a tree grows, it always grows upward to the stars. We are young; we are fully alive, and to us, who possess the incomparable Vic spirit to win, and to win fairly, the future is shining with promise, like those distant stars. We will gain happiness, because we have been taught to work and to have courage, because we have learned the value of worthwhile thoughts and ideals, and because we were graduated from Victoria Composite High School! is GALE ROUND DENNIS Secretary MICHAELCHUK T reasurer ELIZABETH MARKLE BARRY BOTSFORD ROSALIE FISHER JENNIFER MacNAUGHTON GARY WHITE MARLENE MILTON ANDREW BENIUK MISS A. LENT Adviser LESLIE JINKS 16 THE GRAD CLASS-1982 The sun is just appearing over the horizon on the morning of May 19, 1962. A sleepy Vicite returns home from graduation, very happy, but a little sad. As he had watched his classmates walk across the stage the night before, he had realized, so suddenly, that each one was special. Everyone had played an important role in the life of Vic, and he knows they will play an equally important role in the world of tomorrow. Sleep -seems impos¬ sible; the years roll away, and it is 1982. Strains of the Commencement March fill the room and the graduates of ' 62 begin to appear again; just a little older. The first person to appear is MR. COLIN CAMPBELL. Colin spent his Grade 12 year making fish for Vic ' s Grad Dance, and has now become a Deep Sea Diver off the coast of Newfoundland. The little lady beside Colin proves to be BARBARA FLAGLER. Barbara has become the world-wide president of The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Little People. (CAROL McELGUNN has 100% attendance). BEVERLEY GREEN and DAVID HUGHES appear with their heads bent over a copy of GLAD, a new magazine which has replaced MAD as the magazine for the intellectual. Experience gained by these two on the Vic Argosy proved to be invaluable in their creation of this quality magazine. Behind Bev and David comes a polka- dotted Dino led by MADAME EILEEN DUBETZ. Madame studied design in Paris, patented Dino and has become a multi-million¬ aire. She is accompanied by the other half of Vic ' s old cheering squad, DENNIS MASSEY, who is still twisting. The next person to appear is MYER RABINOVITZ. After a wonderful performance as Plato in Vic ' s Rebel Without a Cause, Myer has spent the last twenty years on Broadway, looking for a cause. Beside Myer is DONNA MAE HOWDEN who has become famous for her Italiano cooking. Donna has taken over Victoria ' s Cafeteria and feeds the students nothing but Pizza. A green-clad figure, armed only with a bow and arrow enters and proves to be KAY ROBIN BINGHAM. Kay has given up a brilliant career as a female astronaut to bring edu cation and culture to the people of Sher¬ wood Forest. Kay is accompanied by JOHN BUTLER who has amazed music critics of the world by his performance of the Minute Waltz. Each year John knocks a little more time off, and at last count he was down to 43.7 seconds. The next person to appear is KENNETH LAMBERT (whose eyebrows still go up.) Ken left Vic with a slide rule in one hand and a football in the other, and has since developed The Scientific Method of Playing Football in a Lab. On each arm Ken has a girl, dressed in Oriental garb. They prove to be BARB EDMUNDS and LINDA COMMON, who be¬ came so enthusiastic in their campaign for KIM BONG JA, Vic ' s adopted student, that they have spent their lives in China cultivat¬ ing rice crops. A famous pair of dimples announce the entrance of ELIZABETH MARKLE. Eliz. ob¬ tained a Ph.D. in bio-chemistry, and has devoted her entire life to the development of a chewing gum with flavor that really lasts. The man with the basketball under his arm beside Eliz is DARWIN SEMOTIUK. Darwin has become a brilliant sports personality, and spends his time autographing basketballs, and track shoes. Following Eliz and Darwin is BOB BUR- CHAK who has gained a Bob Hope type of nose. Bob entertains audiences of the world with his impersonations of the teachers from a school called Victoria Composite. Beside Bob is ROSALIE FISHER who now plays lead French horn for the Boston Philharmonic. She owes it all to her experience in Mr. Demarco ' s band. Many more familiar people are appearing in this Vicite ' s dream, but the Commencement March is being replaced by the roar of a lawn motor and the shouts of children. Our Vicite rolls over to contemplate the fate of the 1962 graduating class, and somehow he knows that each and every member will do his part in creating the world of tomorrow. 18 GRAD HISTORY Remember 1959? Of course you do. That was our first year at Vic. It seems quite a while since we were called Frosh, doesn ' t it? But think back, back to that first day in these hallowed halls. Remember how we gazed in awe at the vastness of the place, feeling just a little inferior and unnoticed in all that wonderful organized confusion of opening day. It seemed impossible that we, the wheels of our junior high schools, were now reduced to lowly Frosh. Remember how we shrank at the iron gaze of the Senior and stumbled to do his every bidding, in an effort to keep away from that notorious high school institution, the Frosh Court. But we soon l earned that Seniors were not gods but students just like us. This fact realized and the school well explored, we settled down to normal school routine. Normal? Who ' s kidding whom? Life at Vic is never normal, especially in the first year. Under the leadership of Harry Hiller and Anne Gardiner, we were introduced to many phases of V.C.H.S., such as clubs, houseleague sports, and the long, long line in the cafeteria. In the fall we attended our first Vic dance, Shmoo ' s Shindig. Early in 1960 we enjoyed The Male Animal, soon followed by Fine Arts Night which presented Eternal Life and the Potboiler. A very successful Career Day was followed by the election of Tom Wilson as Grad President. That year the Argosy was headed by Stephen Cox and the yearbook by Libby Cotsman. Sportswise, Vic gained new honors as our Junior Football team, our Boys ' Swim Team, and both our Boys ' Basketball teams won city championships. Then came the Spring Prom in April and, before we knew it, we had written our finals and completed grade ten. Grade eleven started with a bang with Frolique Francois and a near win for our Senior Football team. Our new President was Gary Silverman with Diane Hlasney at his right hand. Guiding the Argosy was Diane Andreas with Jim Tanasiuk and Jim Wildish in charge of the yearbook. 19 Although our year play didn ' t materialize, Fine Arts Night more than made up for it with two excellent productions: Breeches from Bond Street and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs. Again our hoopsters, both Junior and Senior Boys, were tops in the city, as well as our Boys ' Swim Team and our Badminton Team. Following Pagoda Prom in the spring, Dick Arnold led the grad class to their big night. Also graduating was Mr. H. A. McFarland, one of the finest and most outstanding principals Vic has ever known. So here we are in our senior year (at last). We like to think of 61-62 as our year and we can well be proud of it. Our politics are ably controlled by Ken Lambert and Darwin Semotiuk, our publications by Bev Green and Bev Ross of the Argosy and Brian Botsford and David Hughes of the Yearbook. Congratulations to our curling team for gaining Provincial Honors. All four of our Basketball teams have won city championships, proving conclu¬ sively which is the basketball school in Edmonton. We can be justly proud of our I its, dances, and our year play Rebel Without a Cause. Special mention must be made of those wonderful Pedagogical Players for their production of Pyramus and Thisbe. This has indeed been a fine year for Vic, and because it is our year, it will remain in our memories for many years to come. Much happiness has been found here and many lifelong friendships begun. Now, as we prepare to leave, we realize the boost that Vic has given us onto the road to maturity. And so from the class of 62 to our Alma Mater, thanks Vic, thanks a lot. Ken Simpson. SHEPPARD Adviser 91 PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE The rumble of tractors and trucks outside our class¬ rooms announces the end of an era. Shortly, the walls of the old Red Building will come tumbling down and will be replaced by a new and more efficient structure. I therefore think it fitting that we should close this era with one of the biggest banner years any school has ever seen. This year we have won more honors, cups and cham¬ pionships than any other school, and in doing so, we have maintained the high standards for which Vic has been famous throughout its history. I am proud of its students, their achievements, spirit and sportsmanship, and I am happy to have been given the opportunity to serve them. Our sports activities have been very impressive. In football, our team went through the season undefeated and then lost by one point in the Championship game. The volleyball season saw Vic win both senior and junior girls ' championships and three out of six boys ' champion¬ ships. In basketball, we were equally successful in winning every championship contested. Both boys and girls won the junior and senior leagues, and the senior boys went undefeated in the C.A.P.H.E.R. match. In the Provin¬ cials, our senior team lost by a slim margin in an over¬ time period, but this was no disgrace for they played well and were a credit to our school. The numerous Vic clubs fared very well this year and I was interested to see the Fashion Show put on by the Modelling Club and the French Party organized by the French Club. An indication of increased activity among clubs in the future was clearly shown ot our first Inter¬ school Club Conference, which was a tremendous success. The clubs benefited so much from this conference that it will become an annual affair. I am very grateful to my executive and to their many talented assistants who helped them in their endeovours. At Christmas, our Social Board put on Candy Cane Caper, the most successful and best-attended dance that I have ever seen. Vic students had the opportunity to display their talents at two fine lits managed by the Assemblies Board. Our yearplay, “Rebel Without a Cause, presented by the Drama Department, was of equal merit and provided our students with interesting worthwhile entertainment. The success of the Student Union activities cannot be credited to the students alone, for behind each activity, there is a teacher who devotes much of his or her free time in coaching, advising, instructing or supervising. I feel that here lies one of the reasons why Vic is better than any other school, for our teachers devote their time willingly and do everything in their power to help the students in a friendly manner. An impressive example of our teachers ' participation lies in the Pedagogical Players who spent many hours preparing a play for the students to enjoy. As the year is slowly coming to a conclusion, my thoughts go ahead to sometime next fall when many of our fine students will be receiving prizes, awards and scholarships for their academic achievements. I would like to thank these students now for their efforts. I under¬ stand how hard many of them have worked, and I realize and appreciate the great honours they will bring to our school. I would like to offer a big bouquet to the many room representatives and executive members who attended our council meetings and tried to make our council an efficient governing body. To these students and Mr. Sheppard, our helpful staff adviser, I owe the greatest debt of thanks for helping to make this term a happy and successful one. In closing, I would like to wish all Vicites good luck on their final exams and prosperity and happiness in their future lives. 92 STUDENT MEMBERS OF BOARDS Row 1: Left to right, Terry Bohaychuk, Myer Rabinovitz, Bob Carwell, Darwin Semotiuk, Ken Lambert, Shirley Kopty, Barb Edmunds, Anne Wheeler, Heidi Foerster, Bev Green. During the 1961-62 season, Vic won many honors because of good teams and the excellent sportsmanship. The Senior Football Team played through the ent ire season undefeated. In the season ' s final, the Redmen were defeated by Eastglen 3-2. The loss, however, should be no discredit for Vic because the team played some excellent football, only to lose by a bad break in the final minutes of the game. The Junior Football Squad enjoyed a good season ending up in a respected third position. In basketball, the Senior Redmen retained the coveted CAP.HER. cup and fought their way through the basketball season with a 9-win, no¬ loss record. Vic defeated Eastglen in the city final to win the Victoria Challenge Trophy. In the Provincial Play-offs, Vic lost by three points to Raymond in overtime. The Junior Basketball Team defeated the St. Joseph ' s squad to win the Adams Trophy. Vic ' s Swim Team, coached by Mr Hohol, came in second in the annual city swim meet held at the University Pool. This year has also been very good to the curling team for they swept through the city and provincial play-downs with only one loss. The team then advanced to Halifax for the Dominion play-offs. At Halifax, the team got off to a bad start but soon recovered to place fourth in Canadian High School Curling. Victoria ' s Volleyball Teams also showed their strength in the city by winning three of the six championships. The Grade 12 teams won two championships and the Grade II team won the other. The Badminton, Table Tennis, and Chess and Checkers Clubs have also defeated their opponents in inter-school meets. Congratulations for a job well done must be extended to the coaches and players who have helped make this sports year so successful. 116 Senior Football Row 1: Left to right, Dennis Todoruk, Russ Oginski, John Dennis, Ed Stashyshyn, Ken Lambert, Gordon Cunningham, Alvin Goodkey, Alvin Plaisier, Bob Baron, Barry Coates. BOYS ' HOUSE LEAGUE MANAGERS MR. DEMERIEZ S-- n •I DARWIN SEMOTIUK TERRY SULYMA — VOLLEYBALL — RICHARD STRONG GARY SILVERMAN — SWIMMING — 120 GIRLS SPORTS — by BARBARA CORBETT VICTORIA GIRLS COLLECT VALUABLE SILVERWARE This year the V.C.H.S. girls ' sport scene was one of many wins and tew losses. Many senior and junior girls turned out for the fall volleyball practices. The girls chosen to represent our school were indeed very capable. Our senior girls played eighteen volleyball games in regular league play, of which they lost only one game to Ross Sheppard. In the second round, Victoria defeated Ross Sheppard. Both teams completed the season with a seventeen-win, one-loss, record which meant these first-place teams would play a best-of-three play-off series. The Victoria girls displayed their talents by defeating the Ross Sheppard girls two games straight in the play-offs. Sylvia Lohin and Rosalie Fisher shared the co-captain duties and Miss B. Fisher was the coach. The team was directed by these three very capable leaders. While the senior girls were winning; so were the juniors, who also played an eighteen-game regular league series. Out of eighteen games, the girls in red lost only one game to Ross Sheppard.. As Victoria continued winning after their fall to the team in the blue Ross Sheppard lost another game. At the conclusion of the schedule, the Victoria juniors had a seventeen-wins, one-loss, record while Ross Sheppard obtained a sixteen-wins, two-loss record. This give Victoria sole possession of first place and the High School Junior Girls ' Volleyball Championship to their credit. Miss Tait coached the girls to this valuable position. Not long after the volleyball season concluded, the basketball fever blossomed. The senior team was represented by ten competent girls who had climbed to the finals for two years straight, but never guite reached the final step. The girls played fired-up ball this season to reach the top. They played eight league games, beating each team decisively. Victoria then had to play with St. Mary ' s in a sudden death final. From start to finish, our girls pressed St. Mary ' s to win that long-wanted trophy. Miss B. Fisher coached and Sylvia Lohin was the captain. One girls ' basketball championship was not enough for there were still another to be won. This was for our junior girls to conquer. They played a great season only losing one game in league play which entitled them to epresent our school in the city championships. Indeed, the girls did a fine job by defeating St. Mary ' s soundly to add another trophy to our trophy case. Miss Tait inspired the girls to the top. Swimming season was going strong when basketball was nearing a close. For three months, three girls trained diligently to test their talents in the city championships in March. This hard work paid off. A junior girl, Judy Lastwika, captured second place in the diving event. In the lanes, Glenna Gardiner, also a junior member, tallied up five points in our favour. We will be looking for great accomplishments from these two girls in the years to come. Barbara Corbett splashed for seven points in the butterfly, free style, and diving events. This season was a success for both junior and senior teams. Congratula¬ tions to the players and the coaches of the volleyball, basketball, and swim¬ ming teams. Victoria is proud of you, your skill, and your flawless sportsmanship. As we draw the sports pages to a close, may we hope that next year ' s teams will be just as great, if not greater, than the teams of previous years. 121 JUNIOR BASKETBALL Row 1: Left to right: Toffy Smith, Brenda Whitley, Jackie Urquhart, Esther Miller, Mary-Ann Krawchuk.
