AdzMXwleAc Mesit . . . In later years when you look on the pages of this book they will bring back memories. Pleasant memories of carefree days at school. The publications staff has worked hard in making this book possible. Each staff has had a job to do, and has done it well. Advertising staff and circulation have financed the book by raising enough money. Art and Makeup staff worked on photography, art and layout work. The news and features staffs did the various write-ups. The photographer, engraver and printer played a very essential role in the publication of this book. THEME This year we have a rather different but appropriate theme. Different because it departs from the usual style of title pages which depict the contents of the following section and appropriate because of the Coronation. Our little Eskimo boy and girl are going to the Coronation—(bearing gifts for the Queen). We hope you enjoy their antics,—we did. —RUTH JETTKANT. 2

jbed.icG.tian to Q. 0. dtick-i. Born on a farm near Centralia, Ontario, Mr. Hicks early aroused atten¬ tion because of his astounding mathematical and scientific ability. At fifteen, he won the Edward Blake Scholarship and entered the University of Toronto, in the difficult Math and Physics course. He graduated with first-class honors and his M.A. degree. Cornell, and other leading universities, offered him lectureships, and business firms wanted a gifted mathematician like Mr. Hicks as a chartered accountant. He turned all offers down, having no liking for the cold, impersonal world of the university faculty. “I wanted to work with boys, and I liked football,” he says. Also, three years of teaching in Western Canada had left him with a strong desire to go back and stay. Graduating in 1911, the year the red V.H.S. building was completed, he came there to teach math, and, except for two years as an inspector, he has been at Vic. ever since, becoming principal in 1920. He is a past president of the A.T.A. and has been on its executive for thirteen years. Very interested in the problem of meeting the needs of a great variety of students, Mr. Hicks visited composite schools all over Canada and the eastern States. He began campaigning vigorously for the construction of such high schools in Alberta. To Mr. Hicks’ efforts we owe the three million dollar V.C.H.S. building. After his retirement Mr. Hicks plans to remain in Edmonton with his family, enjoying his favorite pastimes of playing billiards and motoring. 3
