ELIZABETH THE SECOND AdzMXwleAc Mesit . . . In later years when you look on the pages of this book they will bring back memories. Pleasant memories of carefree days at school. The publications staff has worked hard in making this book possible. Each staff has had a job to do, and has done it well. Advertising staff and circulation have financed the book by raising enough money. Art and Makeup staff worked on photography, art and layout work. The news and features staffs did the various write-ups. The photographer, engraver and printer played a very essential role in the publication of this book. THEME This year we have a rather different but appropriate theme. Different because it departs from the usual style of title pages which depict the contents of the following section and appropriate because of the Coronation. Our little Eskimo boy and girl are going to the Coronation—(bearing gifts for the Queen). We hope you enjoy their antics,—we did. —RUTH JETTKANT. 2 jbed.icG.tian to Q. 0. dtick-i. Born on a farm near Centralia, Ontario, Mr. Hicks early aroused atten¬ tion because of his astounding mathematical and scientific ability. At fifteen, he won the Edward Blake Scholarship and entered the University of Toronto, in the difficult Math and Physics course. He graduated with first-class honors and his M.A. degree. Cornell, and other leading universities, offered him lectureships, and business firms wanted a gifted mathematician like Mr. Hicks as a chartered accountant. He turned all offers down, having no liking for the cold, impersonal world of the university faculty. “I wanted to work with boys, and I liked football,” he says. Also, three years of teaching in Western Canada had left him with a strong desire to go back and stay. Graduating in 1911, the year the red V.H.S. building was completed, he came there to teach math, and, except for two years as an inspector, he has been at Vic. ever since, becoming principal in 1920. He is a past president of the A.T.A. and has been on its executive for thirteen years. Very interested in the problem of meeting the needs of a great variety of students, Mr. Hicks visited composite schools all over Canada and the eastern States. He began campaigning vigorously for the construction of such high schools in Alberta. To Mr. Hicks’ efforts we owe the three million dollar V.C.H.S. building. After his retirement Mr. Hicks plans to remain in Edmonton with his family, enjoying his favorite pastimes of playing billiards and motoring. 3 GARY BONES MRKt - UP EDITOR RUTH 3ETTKANT EOITOR; IN - CHIEF BIANR HOOVER mm gumas IVAN HOPKINS OOVFHUS.IM nBH«C£K m W-H. It is my honor and pleasure to express, on behalf of the graduating class of ’53, thoughts of farewell to the halls of Vic.—halls that have been our home for the past three or four years. In bidding farewell I would look back at the pleasant times we have enjoyed together as students. To me it seems such a short time ago that we entered the school for the first time. The bewildering routine soon became a part of us—etched into our hearts. We have had fine fellowship of the calibre and type that may be had at no other time in life. We have, by degrees, developed a social conscience and have learned to live and work harmoniously with our fellow man. In addition to this we have received an education—a multi faceted education. The formal classroom type and the know-how of organization and direction of activities. I feel certain that whatever we have learned here will be an asset to us later in life. For the guidance and instruction we have received we have a very select group of people to thank—people who are engaged, by preference, in the profession of teaching. Certainly this is not a lucrative profession with regard to remuneration or any other aspects. Men and women teach because they enjoy helping students and moulding them into young men and women—citizens. I therefore hold that we owe a debt of gratitude to our teachers. A change is always a weird and wonderful experience and we are about to undergo the first major change of our lives. Our schooling is over. What have we to look forward to? We have been given keys to unlock doors in a vast and complex machine. The moulding is over—now comes the test. Your highway in years past has not been smooth nor is it likely to be. However, it is my sincere hope that you all meet with the highest degree of success in your various endeavors. The Boy Scouts have a saying which wisely points out—“Do Your Best.” No more can be expected of any man. ERNIE TRISCHUCK ERNEST TRISCHUK. PAT EUSTACE DOUG. ROBERTSON JOAN WALKER ELEANOR BACKSTROM MANUEL PANAR DOLLYANN THACHUK BARD GLENNE HELEN KUCHABA GIgm. By Claire Williscroft Comes the time to reminisce. Remember grade ten when we were all dazed “Frosh”? Our president was Johnny Galanka, elected after that noisy, colorful campaign. Social Convener was Ron Downey, who, with his hard working committee, sup¬ plied “Snatch ’Em,” which drew the largest crowd in Vic’s history, “Winter Escapade,” and “Senior Prom,” for student enjoyment. Other names brought to mind are Argosy Editor Jim Gooding, Year Book Editor Leone Yule, and Grad. President, Hector McDonald. The drama club contributed “I Remember Mama.” Vic’s first year play directed by Miss Alta Mitchell (now Mrs. S. Bento) and Barbara Garrett, then a frosh, played Mama. This was also the year of the official opening of the school. Now, let’s turn to sports. In curling, Herb. Olson’s rink won the Irvine Kline Trophy in the Christmas High School Curling Champion¬ ship. In the city football championship, our Seniors lost out to St. Joe’s by that “fatal” 7-6 score. The Junior A boys captured the city basketball championship. For the fifth year in succession, our Senior Whites were the Senior A Boys, City Champions. The close of the year brought our Senior’s Grad dance, preceded by Award Night. Win¬ ners of the V.C.H.S. Special Award were Leone Yule and Sophie Laskowsky. The next term brought new faces to the key positions. Walter Muir became Victoria Com¬ posite’s third president. Shirley Donaldson headed the Social Committee. “Dogpatch Daze” was the success of the season, while other dances were cancelled due to “lack of student interest.” Editor of the Argosy and Year Book was Casey Skakun and Grad. President was Ron Downey. The Drama Club made a repeat perform¬ ance as far as hits go. “Life With Father,” starring Barbara Garrett and Ron Jones, was directed by Miss A. Mitchell. For the second straight year, the Girl’s Track Team captured the Provincial Inter¬ scholastic Track and Field Meet. Our Senior A boys’ basketball team was again the City Champs, only to lose to Raymond for the second consecutive year. The boys’ Junior A team won the following titles: City Champs, Northern Alberta Champs, North Central Al¬ berta Champions and best of all, the Provin¬ cial Championship. 22 jititoSUf, Herb Olson and his curling quartette re-won the Irvine Kline Trophy, and went on to win the Northern Alberta curling championship. Mr. Robert Routledge, the square dancing club advisor, coached a “square” which be¬ come the city High School Square Dance Champions. Another year’s end, and another Grad Dance. Award night introduced Special Award win¬ ners Joyce Jones, Lorraine Munro, Marie Sporleder, Walter Muir, and Casey Skakun. At last, we were the seniors. Jim Shipka was elected president after a hectic two day campaign. Louise Warring, vice-president, was the commercial wing’s choice. Lome Day was appointed Social Con¬ vener. The social season commenced with Hobo Hop, the third Sadie Hawkins dance. “Rijou Bounce” and “Spring Serenade” were the next two successes. The standard of en¬ tertainment at the assemblies reached an all time high when the large variety of school talent was revealed. The Argosy—Ruth Jettkant was editor—- presented eight issues of the paper this year to give the students more complete coverage of all events. Athletics—and who can forget that rainy, muddy night when Vic suffered the double defeat in the football field? Eastwood topped our juniors, and Scona trounced Vic Seniors. Vic reall y shone on the basketball floor this year. The senior Red girls were the City Champs. The junior White boys won the City Championship in a thrill packed game in mid- March. After winning the city championship and the North Central Alberta Championship, the senior boys’ basketball team lost out once again to the Raymond Comets. The boys managed to stretch the series to its three game limit however. Credit is due the cheer leaders who were on hand at all the football and basketball games this year. An excellent year play, “Richard of Bor¬ deaux,” was produced by Mr. W. Kaasa, and starred Jim Edwards. Award night, May 29, and the names of Jim Shipka and Ruth Jettkant were again in the limelight. These students won the new C. O. Hicks and the J. Percy Page Citizenship Award. Right on the heels of award night came our grad dance. Planned by Grad President Ernie Trischuk, and the grad class executive, the dance was held in the new Macdonald Hotel. When you read this over, several years from now, perhaps the memory of your “happy” school days will be relived. 23 Pnincifialk M i cuje, to GRAD CLASS of C. O. HICKS “Some unsuspected isle in far-off seas.” —Robert Browning You, the Grad Class of ’53, have now devoted one quarter of your allotted span of years toward the attainment of an adequate measure of mental and physical competence which, integrated with the steady growth of good character and the awareness of the implications of worthwhile citizenship, has enabled your elders to acclaim you with justifiable pride while your juniors may well regard your status with awe and with the hope of emulation. Those among you whose record places them in the category of the scholastic elite are no doubt sensible of the truth that their special abilities have at the same time placed upon their shoulders an onerous debt both to themselves and society, which should impel them to attend University in order that those rarer abilities may come to full flower. As for the remainder of the Grad Class whose abilities may best be classified as average, it is only necessary to remind ourselves that most of our world’s work is carried on by the average men and women. It behooves the person of this average attainment to make an earlier contact with life in order that, after a number of trials, he may the sooner descry his especial niche in business and society. Basically, the Creator has differentiated MAN from ANIMAL by imbuing MAN with a potential capacity to develop logic and will power. It would appear to be part and parcel o f the Divine plan that the attainment of these two attributes must be a concomitant of relentless and bitter travail. Just to the extent in which we persevere in the understanding and proper use of logic, and in which our will power causes us to do the harder tasks which we know ought to be done, will each one of us approximate achieving the Divine purpose for which we were created. It seems fortunate that the precise nature of our future should be eternally withheld, for were it otherwise, the zest and savour of living would be largely denied us. To each individual in a democracy the ultimate benison has been conferred when it is realized that the democratic way of life enables each of us to create for himself by the judicious employment of intelligence, will power and imagination, a future which will be both worthwhile and satisfying. There awaits each member of the Class of ’53 “an unsuspected isle in far-off seas.” Each one of you is captain of his own destiny as you sail through the turbulent seas of human relationships. Soon you will find your own special island, probably not the island of your dreams, but an “unsuspected island,” one especially contrived just for you, where every talent with which you are endowed will be utilized and appreciated—true harbor, at last. And now, to the Class of ’53—BON VOYAGE! 24 GRADUANDS LJnuzns in 1 itam” (OUT OF YOUTH INTO LIFE) ADAM, Rose Activities: Volleyball House League, Argosy Room Rep., Glee Club, Swimming, Skating. Edmonton 66 67 fynxutt tlte Pn U ent Upon looking back over this year it makes one feel proud to know that “Vic.” came through with a job well done. If school spirit is the factor that makes things turn out so successfully, we can certainly say that we had more than our share. The Football season was only the beginning. Then our tremendous Athletic year neared its climax with the playing of the City and Provincial Basketball Championships. The cheering from the capacity crowds at Vic. was so intense that you could almost feel the rafters shaking. This was typical of the support displayed throughout the entire year. The Social Committee had their best year in quite some time and the dances which they presented were worthy of so fine a school. Starting from the hard-time Hobo Hop to the gala Spring Serenade the success achieved was reward enough for the hard work put into promoting our (Vic’s) evening functions. Without a doubt this year’s Assemblies provided splendid entertainment for the very ap¬ preciative audience. Credit for their success goes to the Assembly Committee, Mr. E. Nepstad the Assembly Convener, and all those who performed. At this time, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr. C. O. Hicks, the man who made Vic what it is today and who is retiring this year after holding the reins for 28 years; Mr. H. A. McFarland, our new principal; Miss M. Crawford, the dean of women; Mr. W. S. Waddell, our very capable Students’ Union Adviser and the entire teaching school staff for guiding us in becoming better citizens. Mention also must be given to the coaches and advisers for the efficient manner in which they handled our extra-curricular clubs and organizations. Deserving a well-earned pat on the back is Mr. R. H. Routledge and his very popular house league which enioyed its third year to date. Thanks are long overdue to Mr. Anderson, Mr. Zavitz and their assistants, who managed to keep the school clean in spite of the condition it was left in come the end of each school day. Thank you once again for the overwhelming support and co-operation which was required in making this a great year. JIM SHIPKA. JIM SHIPKA 68 STUDENTS ' COUNCIL Executive LINDSAY POPE Grade XII Rep. Hobo Hop saw a change in the usual procedure with the girls asking the boys to this Sadie Hawkins Day dance in November. The movie, Tulsa, with Susan Hayward was featured at Bijou Bounce, a theatre party and dance in February. Deemed the most successful of all, Spring Serenade appeared in March. Semi-formal dress was chosen and the gym was beautifully decorated for the occasion. 71 CORONA HOTEL YOUR HOTEL IN EDMONTON STRiCTLY FIREPROOF - ATTRACTIVE RATES J. L. During the 1952-53 term, under the editorship of Ruth Jettkant, the V.C.H.S. publications set-up underwent several changes. The most popular feature with the students was the printing of eight 8-page papers rather than the old system of 5 ten-page issues. The Editorial Staff divided into three sections, News, Business, and Makeup, thus resulting in a more efficiently run publication. A new feature, “ ‘Riter’s Roost,” was introduced by Exchange Editor James Smith and provided an outlet for material written by students in the school. Iris Taschuk wrote a new and unusual column under the heading “Musical Notes,” while Emily Melech did a fine job of “Among the Alumni.” The Christmas issue of the Argosy was superimposed with a green Christmas tree and all the trimmings. This was done with a large lino-cut done by Joyce Powley. An entirely new project was undertaken by Beth Hayes in the form of a handbook. This book will be issued in the fall to new students at a nominal charge. It will provide much valuable information concerning the school and the courses provided, so as to familiarize newcomers to Vic. This year the year book circulation and advertising staff broke all previous records in sales and advertising. The circulation department provided a colorful campaign and broke all previous records in year book sales. The advertising staff also set a new record in selling their full quota of advertising. 78 Publications Staff Candids Publications Meeting Make-up Staff 79 mm Richard of Bordeaux 8 Back Row: Jerry Collier, Bruoe Hamilton, Dennis Pepin, Bob Day, John Crerar, Norman Land, Donn Cline, Doug. YEAR PLAY Presenting—RICHARD OF RORDEAUX! by the Drama Classes in co-operation with the Vic. Drama Club. The play ran April 15, 16, 17 and 18, 1953. It was quite a switch from the comedy productions the last few years have seen, but the dramatic theme was carried out excellently. The play was a historic epic, and took place over a number of years at the turn of the 14th century. Young King Richard of England found himself under the thumb of his scheming uncles. He overcomes their dominance, and sets about to right wrong. But eventually, he destroys his enemies, and finally, destroys himself. Richard and his young wife, Anne, supply romantic interest; comedy relief was provided by Richard’s pesky relatives. The cast of “Bordeaux” took hold of their parts and turned out performances that many professionals could not better. Jim Edwards was outstanding as Richard, and Arlene Howarth as Queen Anne gave a delightful, realistic presentation. The sets and costumes for the two acts were masterpieces rich, colorful, and completely authentic. Mr. Walter Kaasa, drama teacher at V.C.H.S., directed the play, assisted by Billy Blacklock. 81 JloaJ tiUf, tf-osi a Kee t Outjfit ta Stalt the Summed Hujht? Victoria High’s House League sports again enjoyed another good year in 1952-53. Divided into four houses, the senior team consisted of grade eleven and twelve boys and a junior team of grade ten boys. House Captains were Mel Wyne, House One; Pat Dawson, House Two; Roy Matsuba, House Three; and Ken Usher, House Four. House Four came out on top of the Senior football league while House Three emerged victorious in the Junior league. House Two copped the honors in Senior basketball while House One captured the Junior basketball championship. Other sports played in the house league are volley ball, soccer and fastball. The house league has proved to be one of the most successful and enthusiastic extra-curricular activities at Vic. It was originated at Vic four years ago by Mr. R. H. Routledge, physical education instructor, and has improved, through trial and error until it has become one of the best organized and highly-competitive activities we have. 102 Girls ' Senior Red Basketball First Row: Madeline Dosen, Diane Cload, Marie Cassios, Gay Hargreaves, Lillian Bock. Second Row: Betty Lysyk, Lorraine Bawus, Coach—Mr. C. Hollingsworth, Eleanor Demchuk, Gwen Dalmar. Congratulations City Champs! The Girls’ Senior Red Basketball under the capable coaching of Mr. C. Hollingsworth raced through the season with 10 wins and only two loses out of twelve scheduled games. The team consisted of nine players, which included three left overs from last year’s Senior A’s., three step-ups from Senior B, and three from the Junior A’s. Lillian Bock and Eleanor Demchuk were co-captains and probably the backbone of this dynamic team. Eleanor Demchuk was high scorer for the season. Marie Cassios, a Junior step-up, who played her second year in interscholastic basketball has improved miraculously during the season and due to her height, one of her best assets, she now proves to be an invaluable member of this team. Besides their bright red uniforms the Reds, this year, enhanced their appearance on the floor, by new red sweaters, bearing V.C.H.S. in bold letters across the front. These sweaters were donated by the Students’ Union. Winning five straight games the Reds tangled with Westglen Senior Girls to lose by a heartbreaking score of one point. The second loss came when Scona Senior Girls downed them by two small points. There were some close and exciting games, but most of their wins were won by wide margins, without a great deal of effort. The final game between Eastwood and the Reds ended sadly for our girls when Eastwood Senior Girls captured the game by a score of 29-28 to tie Vic’s Senior Reds with ten wins each. The city championship was decided when using the system of points scored for and against to break the tie in the Senior League. Vic Reds had the better average. Our Reds are well deserving champions of the city, as they played hard, fast, and well, with good sportsmanship, and everything else that makes a champion team. Feeling this their year the Reds played two exhibition games, against Lacombe and Camrose, and defeated Doth. 103 Girls ' Senior White Basketball Kneeling: Helen Balogh, Alice Stogryn, Myra Muzis, Jackie Darkes, Emily Me lech. Standing: Mr. J. Allen (Coach), Gail Wood, Marge Currie, Kay Ward, Marge Carnegie Missing: Miss R. Anderson (coach). The Senior White team, under the very capable coaching of Mr. J. Allen and Miss R. Anderson, finished out their twelve game schedule with ten losses and two wins. The team consisted of nine players with floor captains Margaret Currie and Kay Ward, who kept the players calm and collected during the games. Most of the girls had little previous experience in inter-scholastic basketball, but learned fast, played well together, and fought hard in every game. In their clean, white uniforms with red numbers, the team cut a fine figure on the floor and although they tried their very best, they lacked the height which many teams had against them. Improving steadily throughout the season the Whites skillfully downed Westglen Seniors in the last game of the schedule with a score of 24 to 16. The team is to be commended on their fine display of good sportsman¬ ship shown throughout the season. 104 First Row: Ruby Woloshyn, Gail Shields, Moira White. Second Row: Pat McCarthy, Gladys Anderson, Robin Saul, Mary Hoskins, Doreen Plenderleith. Third Row: Coaches—Lillian Bock, Miss M. Irwin. The Junior Reds under the supervision of Miss M. Irwin and Lillian Bock ended their basketball schedule on Wednesday, March 11, with nine losses and three wins. The team, captained by Moira White, appeared at all their scheduled games in white lettered, bright red uniforms. The eight members of the team, who started out the season unsteadily, improved quickly and were close competition for each team they played against. Each player put everything she had into the game, and having only eight players, the team couldn’t afford many substitutions. The girls are to be congratulated on their exceptionally fine efforts shown throughout the schedule, especially since five players were grade ten students, playing their first year of inter-school leagues. Moira White, who played center, was high scorer for the team by rounding up 99 points. The Red team has turned out valuable material to make up our Senior teams next year. 105 Girls ' Junior White Basketball First Row: Marge Wozney, Maureen Magee, Mr. R. W. Smith, Mr. J. Yusep, Vicky Ewasiuk, June McEwan. Second Row: Anne Elliott, Marge Derbyshire, Margaret Lowe, Lil Bordian, Louise Stephenson, Mary-Ann Stebbings, Donna Green. Third Row: Joan Cload. New names were given to all basketball clubs this year with the team concerned being called the “Junior Whites.” This speedy aggregation finished the basketball season with four wins and eight despairing losses. The girls this year have been under the very capable coaching of Mr. J. Yusep and Mr. R. W. Smith. During the regular schedule, the girls played good basketball and have proved valuable material for next year’s senior teams. 106 Curling Champions Front Row: Mickey Gar Lough, Bill Bennington, Colin Law, Geo. Melnyk. Back Row: Herb Olson, Gerry Lewis, Arnie Hall, Bryan Haines. This school year 1952-53 was again one of the most successful curling years in Victoria High’s history. Although a Vic rink failed to win the provincial title or the Northern Alberta Crown, Vic rinks made a clean sweep of city high school championships. During the Christmas holidays Herb Olson’s rink made up of Herb Olson, Jerry Lewis, Arnie Hall and Bryan Haines won the Irving Kline Trophy emblematic of the city high school curling championship. Then a rink skipped by Mickey Garlough entered the Taylor and Pearson Northern Alberta playdowns but lost two heartbreakers by one point margins. Garlough came back in the Easter holidays to win the Corner Drug Store Trophy emblematic of the city North Side High School championship by downing Jerry Pruden, also of Vic, to bring Vic an almost perfect season. 1C7 Boys 1 Senior Football First Row: Lindsay Pope, Wilf. Greaves, Jim McCluskey, Jim Shipka, Doug. Ledgerwood (equipment), Mr. R. H. Routledge, John Timinski, Padraie Clooney, Roy Matsuba, Dick Reeves. Second Row: Herb. Olson, Mervin Bamber, Bill Roy, Denis Luchkovich, Richard (Bud) Smith, Jim Ostrowerka, Russ S’okil, George Finstad, Bert Pape. Third Row: A1 Garraway, Bob Van Kleek, Jack Lamb, Mike Welykochy, Don Brox, Bob Cowan, Missing: Coach ; Steve Mendryk. For the second time in three years the Vic senior football team had to settle for the role of bridesmaid in the city high school league, as they came in a good second but were unable to capture the championship. Showing a strong ground attack and a stout defensive line the red and white squad emerged victorious in all their regular season encounters except one. Victoria overcame Varsity, Westglen and Eastwood, the latter being a sudden-death semi-final, which Vic won 5-0. Their only loss came at the hands of Scona in the most exciting game of the season, the score being 29-18. Vic and Scona played off in the city final, and the south side crew came out on top 16-6, the game being played in a sea of mud. Steve Mendryk masterminded the senior team again, and co-captains were Jim Ostrowerka and Jim Shipka. Instead of using the two-platoon system, which was put into affect the year before, the squad shifted to the use of full-time “60-minute” players. 108 Boys ' Junior Football First Row: Ron Morgan, Terry Jeffries, Leigh McMillan, Bill Kisko, Mr. R. H. Routledge, Mr. J. W. Allen, Doug. Ledgerwood, (Equipment and First Aid), Ernie Figol, Walter Kondrosky, Bruce Clarke, Mel Wentworth. Second Row: Bill Kay, Delmar Thachuk, Marshall Bazylewich, Ed. Lompik, Ernie Ewasiuk, Bud Zahary, Jim Mitchell, Stan Kisko, Tony Walchuk, Les Toutant. Third Row: Ron Cummings, John Schulz, Gordon May, Leo Berg, Eugene Weleschuk, Ken Smith, Denny Beattie, Jerry Lucas, Erwin Zemrau, Ray McMurray, Harry Goldberg, Don Urquhart. Under the capable coaching of Mr. Jack Allen and Mr. R. H. Routledge. Vic’s junior football squad battled to within 10 points of the city high school junior championship, as they lost to Eastwood, 10-0 in the sudden- death playoff final. The team was stopped only once in the regular season, being defeated by St. Josephs 1-0. Summary: Vic 7—Eastwood 5. Sep. 1—Vic 0. Vic 10—Westglen 0. Vic 11—St. John’s 5. Vic 22, Varsity 0. Vic 8—Scona 5. The end of the regular schedule found Vic tied with Eastwood, so the teams played a sudden-death final at Clarke Stadium on a wet, muddy field. Eastwood came out on top 10-0. Most exciting game of the season was the first Eastwood encounter. Eastwood was leading 5-1 on the last play, when Leo Ewasiuk faded back at midfield and fired a long pass to Dennis Beattie, who went over for the major, and won the game for Vic. 109 ' I ■ C THE ?£ ' 7 I 0 J6HT TO ' L BE SOME OIL V .7 DOWN S THERE r- fsr n Coo6let Ofifuntccttitu ‘Tfotv ' .... but the RIGHT Way to Start in BUSINESS Is with BUSINESS TRAINING ♦TJcYXivi H, BUSINESS COIEECE LIMITED 10241 . 102 St. — Edmonton 10652 - 101st Street We ' re Your Neighbors Northern Drafting k Bine Print Co. Second Row: Jim Munro, Lome Day, Coach—Mr. A. E. Henderson, Jim Ostrowerka, Jim Shipka. The Vic senior basketball team is usually labelled the “team to beat” at the beginning of every high school basketball season, and this past winter was no different. But no team in northern Alberta managed to do that, as the well- coached red and white crew racked up ten straight league wins by decisive scores. With the conclusion of the regular schedule, the team was pro¬ claimed city champs without a playoff, as it was obvious that no local team was in their class. The squad travelled to Red Deer in early March, and won the Northern Alberta title by defeating that city’s Composite team by scores of 49-40 and 41-39 in a scheduled best-of-three series. The provincial final was played at our own gym against Raymond High, who had beaten out Vic in last year’s playoff and the seniors met their match for the first time this season. Raymond captured the first game of the best-of-three series 57-49, Vic eked out a thrilling 55-54 win in the second contest, and then Raymond outclassed the home team 54-36 in the deciding encounter. Mr. Arnold Henderson again coached the team, and Jim Munro and Jim Ostrowerka were co-captains. ill Boys ' Junior Red Basketball First Row: Eugene Weleschuk, A1 Garraway, Don Currie, Pat Dawson, Dick Flynn, Ed Cook. Second Row: Mel Wyne (Coach), Murray Bogorus, Ron Cummings, Earl Jennings, George Goldsand, Karl Jennings, Larry Geldart, Mr. J. Allen (Coach). Vic’s junior Red basketball team, composed mainly of first-year play¬ ers, made a creditable showing this past season, losing three games. They wound up in a three-way tie for first place with Scona and Vic Whites after the first round, as they beat Scona, Scona defeated the Whites, and the Whites knocked off the Reds. The second round, oddly enough, ended in an identical three-way tie, as Scona beat the Reds; the Whites beat Scona; and the Reds beat the Whites. A coin was tossed to determine who would get the bye, and the Whites won, leaving the Reds to play Scona in the semi-final. The game was played at Varsity Drill Hall, and the taller Scona squad came out on the long end of a 32-23 count, thus eliminating the Reds for the season. Mr. Jack Allen, who coached last year’s Senior B provincial champs, masterminded the squad. Don Currie was the learn captain. Mel Wyne served in the capacity of assistant coach. Several new prospects were developed in the year’s play. 112 First Row: Bud Smith, Ken Usher, Russ Sokil. Second Row: Barry Morrison, John Mitchell, Ray Martin, Fred Midwinter, Howie Starkman, Bill Kay. Third Row: Danny Pfeifer, Bill Roy, Coaches—Jim Munro, Mr. A. Lust, Jim Ostrowerka, Ray Scobie, Ed. Pakas. For the third consecutive time the city junior high school basketball championship was won by a Vic team. When it was decided to split the two junior teams into two of equal strength, it was feared in some corners that this set-up would cost Vic the title. The completion of the first round found the Whites tied for first place with the Vic Reds and Scona. The same three teams were all deadlocked in the same way at the end of the second and last round. The Whites were awarded a bye into the final, resulting from a toss of a coin. Scona defeated the Reds in the semi-final and it was left to the Whites to salvage the championship. The first game went to Scona by a close 39-37 score, but the team fought back from the brink of elimination to knock over Scona in the second game 40-35, played at Varsity Drill Hall. The Whites came through in the clutch to edge out Scona 45-41 in the deciding game to clinch the crown. Ken Usher was top scorer in every game in the final series. The team was coached by Mr. A. Lust, who was assisted by Jim Ostrowerka and Jim Munro. 113 NATURAL GAS Cooks your meals Heats your home SAFELY EFFICIENTLY ECONOMICALLY GatufodU 115 EATON’S Go yiatiiiatel lUe Qnxz uatincf GIgAA, oj r Uicta , Ua cttkjji Bdtaall Careers may take you to places new But Eaton ' s still has a store for you!
