? sH ' SIAk — --t.it. v - ■w f H August, 1965 February, 1966 The 2 Birth of an Auditorium -m TfcH May, 1966 SEPTEMBER 1, 1966 And the PIRATE ship sails on. In 1948, it was a new campus. In 1958, it was a new library and science building. And in 1966, it was the year of the auditorium. Foreword EACH year has a different personality and a character all its own. The glory of 1966 at Victoria College has been marked by GROWTH — growth consti- tuted by an increase in student enrollment and the erection of the new auditorium. AND we are proud of this physical growth, but 1 966 has developed a deeper and more personal type of growth — the development of each indi- vidual collegian. PIRATE ' 66 attempts to depict this unfolding growth whether it be personal, social, or intellectual. With this aim in mind, we present the 1 966 PIRATE to you. PIRATE co-editors, Alice Briones Carolyn Kovar Table of Contents Introduction Foreword Table of Contents Trustees President and Dean Academics Classes Personalities Organizations Sports Index Board of Trustees Earl Cliburn, secretary; Gerald Dubose; Dr. C. Majoring in activities, the Student Council sponsored numer- ous events during the school year. Social events included a get-acquainted picnic and dance, a Christmas dance, the spring formal, and Western Day, as well as several game nights and a dance after the Parent-Player night. The council was also responsible for conducting all campus-wide elections. These included the election of a vice- president, all-college and class favorites, Pirate Sweetheart and Belles, and the president and secretary of next year ' s council. Student Council sponsors regard the minutes of past meetings. They are Miss Louise Hume, Miss Julia Riggs, and Mr. Mike Hagler. Not shown is Mr. E. C. Shinn. Food and quiet talk were also noted in abundance. A Christmas dance December 1 1 was the first semi-formal sponsored by the Council. Terry Hewlett and Sharon Gunnoe enjoy a slow dance, with the Christmas tree as backdrop. « And let ' s be sure we advertise the dance, ' ' advise: SC sponsor, Miss Riggs to sophomore member: Ricky Byars and Ricky Rothwell. Voting (for amendments, favorites, etc.) was an important part of council-student relations. Virginia Schroeter and Carol Ley cast their ballots. , f, Student Council President Doug Winters apparently has this meeting well in hand as members discuss business and make decisions which will directly or indirectly affect the whole campus. Another council-sponsored activity was parent-player night, Feb. 3 during and after the VC -Wharton basketball game. Here a group of students enjoys refreshments and talk. Smiling into the camera as he takes a break on Western Day is band director Wilbur Collins. West- ern Day, a favorite with students and faculty alike, is council-sponsored. The sophomore girls won the tugof-war contest on Western Day, but t he freshmen, shown here, put up a good fight. Not all the activity on Western Day was fun- and- games, as Randy Smith proves by his diligent li- brary study. Kathy Board gasps in shock as she is named Victoria College sweetheart at the council- sponsored spring formal. Their escorts are James Jones, Ronnie Sells, Roger Walleck, Doug Winters, Ludy Janak, and Robbie Aman. Escort Roger Walleck places the sweetheart ' s crown on the head of 1965-66 honoree Kathy Board. W P Despite the popularity of the frug, monkey, and jerk, everyone still enjoys an old- fashioned slow dance. Members and initiates of Phi Theta Kappa are Susan Meek, Linda Sandhop, Candy Edgar, Linda Lipscomb, Patti Martin, and Alice Briones, seated; and Carole Hunt, Cathy Benge, Dorothy Tipton, Jean Shelton, Tisha Beard, Ricky Byars, and Bill McCown, standing. Phi Theta Kappa A nationally-recognized junior college honor society, Phi Theta Kappa extends membership each semester to those students who during the previous semester have attained a high grade-point average and have demonstrated qualities of citizenship, leadership, and scholastic integrity. This year ' s activities for PTK members included attending the state and area conventions, sponsoring a book collection for Asiatic stu- dents, and participating in a national alumni survey. The chapter will also select next year ' s state parliamentarian-historian. In addition, the chapter annually awards a scholarship to a freshman to be used in his sophomore year. Fall term officers look on as initiate Ray Arnold signs the registration roll. They are Jean Shelton, secretary, Rick Rothwell; presi- dent, and Cheryl Hobby, vice-president. Special guest speaker at the spring initiation was Mr. Mike Hummel, college faculty member and former member of the VC Phi Theta Kappa chapter. One of Phi Theta Kappa ' s activities was the collection of textbooks for needy Asiatic students. Ricky Byars and Bill McCown pack part of the donations. New members taking the Phi Theta Kappa pledge at spring initiation are Marc Ardoin, Tisha Beard, Alice Briones, Sara Stephens, Bill McCown, Carolyn Toalson, and Johnnie Dumas. 101 Initiate Linda Lipscomb signs the registration book as treasurer Joel Stephens smiles benignly. Discussion topics range from television programs to foreign affairs. Other activities this year included slides of Eu- rope, a Christmas banquet, and talks by guest speakers. 103 Making decisions, both great and small, was an integral part of the editors ' job. Anyone who has had any experience with journalism or newspapers knows the frustration when a headline just won ' t count, the agony of having a story cut to fit a layout, and the pressure of deadlines. But in the case of the Jolly Roger, hard work pays off. In October, it was named for the second consecutive year as the best junior college newspaper in Texas. Overseeing the final page makeup in Jolly Roger preparation are Mr. Frank Deaver, publications director, and spring semes- ter editor, Larna Gregory. Sing along with me. Choir director Mrs. Ruth Wil liams joins her singers in rehearsal as guest conduc tor Maurice Peress drills the group. Pillows, books, and oh yes, music too. It ' s off to Corpus Christi for the choir; six hours bus time plu rehearsal and performance there. And two tests tomorrow! Choir members are lantha Dobsky, Victoria Everett, Elise Donalson, Connie Ayo, Janie Gamblin, Sue Singleton, Cathy Benge, Becky Hargus, Mrs. Ruth Williams, director, (first row); Dorothy Tipton, Kathy Hamilton, Clara Gaskin, Gloria Roberts, Pat Harris, Susan Hindman, Madonna McElroy, Kathy Board, Carol Bruton, (second row); James Reinhardt, Ken Powell, Larry Umlang, James Gardner, Greg Roberts, Eddie Shaw, Ronnie Koliba, Wayne Evatt, Jimmy Barnes (third row); Mark Cameron, James Lenertz, Chipper Sneed, Bill Lyons, Ray Holcombe, James Patterson, and Garry Moore (fourth row). Somebody is off key! Guest conductor Maurice Peress doesn ' t like what he hears, yet. Rehearsals for the Verdi Requiem took all regularly scheduled practice periods late in the fall term — plus some special sessions. College Choir Participation in the College Choir is open to students with musi- cal ability and interest. Directed by Mrs. Ruth Williams, the group sings classical, religious and popular music, and schedules per- formances for area schools, organizations and conventions. They presented the Verdi Requiem both locally and in Corpus Christi, and sang along with other junior college choirs at the Texas Junior Col- lege Teachers Association annual convention in Austin. And let ' s keep the brims level. Corraliers James Patterson, Gloria Roberts, and Pat Harris try on their white western hats.
