Text from Pages 1 - 294 of the 1985 volume:

.xx-Q-xr When a handful of high desert pioneers broke ground 31 years ago for Victor Valley High School, they probably never imagined that it would one day be only one of four highschools in the high desert and that the school district would swell to a student population of 7,000. Victorville remained a quiet, secluded town for many years and the high school served students from many outposts in the vastness of the desert in an attendance area that stretched from Lucerne Valley to Adelanto and Apple Valley to Phelan. However, in the late 60's many persons 'down the hill ' ' saw an opportunity in the high desert to raise their families in clean air and in the beauty of the desert. An exodus began and the population exploded directly affecting the schools ability to serve so many new students. It grew to the point that in 1967, Apple Valley High School was built and 623 students brolze ties with Victor Valley High School to begin their lives as Sun Devils. In 1977, it happened again as Serrano High School opened its doors to 410 former Jaclzrabbits. The Diamondbacks even broke away from the Victor Valley Union High School District to form the Snowline District. Most recently, it happened for the third time in seven years, and students were taken from Victor Valley to form Hesperia High School with 1,323 Scorpions in school on Septem- ber 10, 1984. The pains and joys of this continuous growth are a colorful part of high desert history, but now it's time for us to look home. Time to look at the roots of all this growth. It is time for Victor Valley High to Begin a NEW ERA. Q E 4: ii , 2 fa ? 2 1 f 2 A V V , , X ,,11i Q Q i 1 , 11 XX W, J Qxfxqggwfg dv W M WW W MW H W Q 7 w4 6wW,3?,w,w Www? The school year of 1984-85 has seen students wearing the biggest and boldest accessories ever! Accompanying the big, bulky sweaters and baggy cropped pants, the neon colors of wide belts and flashy jewelry added a little pizzaz to today's fashion statement. Swatch watches and mufflers which went along with pleated pants and wing-tipped shoes were also a big part of the fashion industry. This years fashions were definitely colorful. Many months were spent preparing the Los Angeles streets for the uniting of Olympic teams from all over the world. The result of this effort was clean streets, beautiful murals instead of graffiti, and 80,000 banners to welcome the many thousands of fans and participants arriving in L.A. Many of us from Victor Valley High School were fortunate enough to take part in the competitive atmosphere conveyed by the athletes. Even the people who were not able to attend were kept very well informed by way of the news media. The US. fans were filled with pride as they cheered their athletes on to winning more medals than any other nation in the competition. Webster Dauphiney A i Vince Davis -.ww Nix. The Presidential elections in November, 1984, turned out to be one of the most important events of the school year. As graduating seniors, this newly elected President will have a definite influence onthe next four yearslof our lives. President Reagan, with his running mate, George Bush, overwhelmed the country with a landslide win over Fritz Mondale and his running mate, Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman vice-presidential candidate in the history of the United States. With a leader like President Reagan and a population who is willing to work together, our hope for a peaceful and prosperous future is guaranteed! The battle for the axe always takes place against our long time rivals, the Bar- stow Aztecs. We defeated them 22-21. After losing the axe last year, we were determined to win it back and did. With the defeat of our old rivals, comes the defeat of our new rivals, the Hesperia Scorpions. They tool: even a harder loss of 43-o. Our team showed its true athletic ability in this first time match-up. Coach Leland Eudy started the season opti- mistically, and even through the many losses the team suffered, we remained in high hopes for the team. This year, he won his 5ooth basketball game in his career as a basketball coach. The Jackrabbit basketball team was truly one of the best this year. Winning the season opener against Riverside Poly Q66-581 prepared the Jackrab- bits for league play. When facing Apple Valley, the -lackrabbits lost 47-52, but in the second game the team avenged their defeat ending on top 52-51. The jacl-:rabbits showed no mercy against their new ri- vals, Hesperia, by defeating them in both games with scores of 70-37 in the first game and 54-46 in the second. The Basketball Homecoming game was truly special. The Jackrabbits faced top notched San Bernardino and finished on top with a score of 63- 51. With a Season record of I4 wins and 7 losses and a League record of IO wins and 4 losses, the Jaclcrab- bits earned the second position in SAL Basketball. The second position earned the jackrabbits a seat in the CIF Playoffs. Entering the first round of the CIF Playoffs, the Jackrabbits faced Edgewood High School. The game was very close, but Edgewood prevailed with a score of 65-61. Although they lost in the playoffs, the -lackrabbits are to be commended for their strong and powerful performance in the CIF Playoffs. They placed second in the San Andreas League. There were three ties in the season and they were against Ramona, Apple Valley, and San Bernardino. One tie was the only obstacle that kept the jaclcrabbits from win- ning the League Championships. If tie-breakers were allowed in soccer, the League Champion- ships could be determined on how many games the team won, not on wins and ties. Although the Jaclcrabbits placed second, they entered into the first round of the CIF Playoffs. The team they faced was Calexico High School. In the past two years, the team had been run by Chet Smith and Glenwood Moore, who have given the team spirit and unity. The '85 team is young and should live up to the high expectations set by las: year's team, which took second in SAL and went to the first round of CIF. One individual even advanced to the CIF finals. This year's team is expected to take league, and should do well in CIF. With such a young team, the future looks quite well for the Victor Valley golf team. Organizations 217 CALIFOR IA an-www SCHOLAR HIP F EDERA TI O CSF is an organization on campus which recognizes the scholastic talent of those students at our school who are academically inclined. The club is for only those who have achieved high enough grades and have shown some kind of leadership through their academic abilities. CSF is an honor soci- ety. The group, with the support of advisor Doris Oitzman, sponsors fun- draisers such as candy sales and carrot sales. The money from this goes to scholarships which are given at the end of the year to senior members who are not only outstanding academically, but also high in leadership quali- ties. Money raised also pays for the annual springtime Disneyland trip. At the end of the year, all the members who have goo service points are al- lowed to miss one day of school and head on down to the beach. CONTRA 225 BOARD OF TRUSTEE The Board of Trustees truly had a trying year. The Board increased graduation requirements, saw the opening of Hesperia High School, and also approved the building of our new cafeteria. The Board, however, had its share of problems. A teach- ers' strike was the result of the uncompromising attitudes of the Board and the teachers. An angry public put out a recall on every one of the Trustees. The first casualty of the recall effort was Pat Callaway who resigned as president of the board. William A. Tarr Superintendent 5.1 it From Left to Right: Anthony Piazza, Patricia H. As we said good-bye to Mr. Novaclc, who went on to a new position at Hesperia High School, Mr. Escalera made himself at home as assistant principal in charge of buildings and grounds and disciplinary actions for seniors. But let,s not forget our other assistant principals - Mr. Frey and Mr. Wilkinson. Mr. Frey, who was previously Dean of Students, became the man in charge of activities and the position of Dean of Students was given to Mr. Wilkinson. Through all these changes, however, lVlr. FACULTY In any educational system, the faculty has the most important function. Our faculty had the challenging task of inspiring each student to perform to the best of hisfher capability. They molded the naive minds of adolescents with the challenge of thinking and actually learning. Their guidance and assistance helped us to grow with each new day. They enlightened us with new prospects to a promising future. Teachers made the future possible by imparting to the students the knowledge they had to offer, for we the young are the future.
