A Qfa55f3 Sfigfovpo The class of 'L8 entered their freshman year with twenty members. They were initiated and given a dance by the class of 'L7. Two weeks later they gave a'return dance to the sophomores. un entering the sophomore year the class consisted of the same members with the exception of Bill Covert, who transferred to Hamilton. This left the class with nineteen members. During the year Leona Higle, June Campbell, Doris Atwood, Tim Graham, and Vernon Personett dropped. The class, sponsored by Mrs. McCormick, initiated the class of 'L9 and gave a dance in their honor. Under the direction of Mrs. Sweitzer, they gave e oneract play entitled WLast Night's Peper.n They entered their junior year with fifteen members having lost Evelyn Harington and Rose Marie Rowe after their sophomore year. How- ever, Bill Covert rejoined the class and they were joined also by two new members. They were John Kunze and Carroll Mansfield. on November 2 they gave a Sadie Hawkins Dance and on November 27, a three-act comedy, 'Don't Keep Him Wa1ting,N was presented. The Junior Prom was given on April 18. There are sixteen seniors this year, Larry Briggs having Joined the class after dropping school one year. The officers of the class are: Don Ess, President, Carol Gingerich, Vice President, and Viola Schwaderer, Secretary-Treasurer. Un March 12 the seniors gave a dance with e St. Patr1ck's Day theme. The senior play, entitled WDrums of Death,' was presented April 23. Baccalaureate services were on May 23 and Commencement exercises on May 26. The class went to Medicine Springs all four years for their snring picnic. In the class there are seven seniors who have gone all twelve years together. They are: Don Ess, Joy Brown, Terry Maki, Bill Amos, Viola Simmons, Miles Winship, and Marian Riley. Two seniors, Viola Schwaderer and Dwane Clarke started with them in the first grade, but transferred to other schools for a few years and then returned to Victor to finish school with former classmates. efagg qDro.PgecgO Upon graduation from dear old Victor High School the class of Nineteen Hundred Forty-eight decided that 20 years hence, they would hold a grand reunion, at a place to be designated at a more convenient date. Je will new imagine that the date has been set, the place of union decided. Let us look in on the group. The time is May, 1968, the placc: The home of Mr. and Mrs. Dwane Clarke. Mrs. Clarke is the former Miss Joy Brown. The group is having a very merry tire, but upon close observation changes may be noticed in the vembers of the croup of former happy-go- lucky hi-schoolers. The life of the party, as aluays, is Doctor Larry Briggs, Pro- fessor of Mathematics at the well-known Podunk University, an institu- tion established especially for dim-wits and morons. Over in the corner of-the room, in his favorite game of poker, we see Bill KDare-devill Amos, he is now a race car driver at the noted Indianapolis Hsoou. Altho' he has teased death on the race track doz- ens of times with mishaps, blll recently had a narrow escape when he was nearly electrocuted while playing with his son's electric train. Across the card table from Mr. Amos, and not doing badly in the game, we find that little red-haired charmer, Viola Schwaderer. She is a private secretary for Mr. J. Z. Popensteimer, owner of a fur store in Hollywood. She likes secretarial work very well. The two other participants in the game are Carroll Mansfield and Bill Covert. These two have been very successful in their pursuit of business. They are now co-owners in a large ranch and specialize in the raising of very fine guinea pigs and ducks. Of all the members of the group, these Let us now about each other enthusiastically the group Irene was very pleased two bachelors seem the most contented. look at the little group of people closely huddled in the center of the room. A very cozy little group discussing their troubles and adventures. we find in Menager, She always wanted to be a seamstress, and when she was presented with the wonderful opportunity of working in the HLeen overall factory!! Another of the group is Marian Riley. She is continually tapping her fingers on the table, or anythlng else handy. Perhaps it is a light hangover from her job as typist and secretary for the president of the Flmtz Brewery. lConcluded on next page? Our host, Dwane Clarke, is happily chewing the rag with his old pal, J. T. Maki. Dwane is now employed as a telegraph issippi, Missouri, and Amazon Telegraph Company. He and now receives tcp pay of WIO a month. You'll little difficulty in understanding him. He never Everything he says is spelled out in dots and dashes Terry Maki, who is trying to make out Clarke's sad story. His life has been a very hard one. Since been making his living as a professional football rlay er for the Miss- has worked hard probably have a speaks English. Morse code, is a hi-school he has er and wrestler. His face is so beaten up it locks like a pan of hamburger. His ears are so cauliflowered they resemble the handles of a loving cup. His heart is still strong and true, however. This friendship is as stal- wart as ever. Miss Viola Simmons iyes, still 'Missuf and the former Colleen Kane are delightedly burying each other in stories of their life since the old hi-school days. Viola now owns and operates a larve fish mar- ket and isn't doing badly either. Colleen is now the successful keeper of a happy home and mother of fourteen children. In her spare time, lwith fourteen kids?J, she has a hobby of raising calico cats. Our hostess, Mrs. Clarke, is busily preparing a little snack of smoked herring, pretzels and beer. Knowing that none of the zroup drinks heavily, she only ordered a fifty gallon barrel of beer, and by the time the party is an hour old, the small supply is nearly exhausted. Helping Mrs. Clarke in the preparation of the lunch is Carol Glngerich lonly her name 1sn't Gineerich any morel. She also is a successful home-maker. She works very hard supporting her husband, her job being bricklayer for a local construction company. Miles Winship, who has become a famous foreign missionary is enjoying the party immensely. His travels have carried him to the far corners of the earth. His stories about the people he has met and the countries he visited hold the interest of the group. Say, who's that big, brawny' character over by the beer barrel? why, it's John Kunze. He now works for a logging concern in Washing- ton. After years of hard work, he has progressed to the position of swamper. If he can work another twenty years, he hopes to become a sawyer. Well, I guess that concludes this little story. The writer, Don Ess, as can well be imagined, is an author, although he has met little success in that business. Publishers say his imagination is too absurd. Possibly it's the effects of his days at Victor High School! ww' WMM Off my 0. 7714-4-4-uuu da fm E!fDurUv'A41 -rqlluf 20. paw, w.z..25.f GMM! THE FOOTBALL PLAYERS The Pirate eleven was not big and rangy as some of the other valley teams were, but they fought hard and had lots of spirit. The team only averaged about l56 lbs. to the player so they had to be scrappy and fast to make up for this handicap. Claude Ankeny played center and was relied upon to back up the line on defense. He is only a sophomore, so watch him when he is a senior. The Pirate guards were all small men with not much ex- perience. Dwane Clarke, a senior, was transferred from end position which he played his junior year. Phillip Menager, who never stepped out of anybody's way, will be with the Pirates three more years. Ronald Lee, a auy who gets more promising in every game he plays, Is a junior and will be lots of help to the team next year. Our tackles were both players with the ability to hold down their part of the line. Carroll Lansfleld is a senior who will be missed a rreat deal next year. Harvey Backlin will be a 'reat asset to the team next year. It has been said that the Pirate ends were the best matched in the valley. Leon Conner, the guy with speed and power to overtake any o'le boy that got away. Tommy Trow- bridge, that other end, seemed to have glue on his finger tips when it came to snatching passes out of the air. They will both be with the team next year. At quarter-back position is Don Rss, a senior. He was a good calm thinker and could call the right plays at the right time. Walter Roy was right half-back. He was small, so didn't get to carry the ball much but was good on pass defense and stopped lots of runs. Watch him in three more years. Bill Covert was left half-back. He has played for the Pirates for three years and will be missed next year. Terry Maki, full-back and captain, made runs, punted and passed for the Pirates and will be a great loss to the team. FQQTBALL DAYS When your football, days are over, And your hair is turning gray, Look back and you'll remember The men who used to play. There's Skip, our scrappy center, Who never missed his pass, And when we went on football trips, He'd flirt with every lass. There's Phil and Lee and Clarke, They're guards and boy they're there, For when you try to go through them, They grab you anywhere. And ?Killer' Mansfield, our mighty ta Could move a line a yard, And if ever a man did go through him He was tackled mighty hard. Then Harvey, that other tackle, When ever mad he got, Put up the fastest battle You ever did see fought. they called 'Speedyn Conner, A mighty man is he, they tried to run his end That end For when It was just too bad, you see. Then Trowbridge, he's a lanky guy, Left end is what he played, End runs were stopped in nothing flat By shoe string tackles that he made. There's Mac, our dear old full-back Could pass and kick and run, And when he was put on defense Was a flghtin' son-of-a-gun. Next comes Bud Roy Right half is what he played, And when Budd hit the line He knocked 'em in the shade. Then Ess our snappy quarter-back, A rugged guy was he, Could pass when nearly flattened A trick you'll seldom see. And me, I am Kid Covert, A wonderoue guy, I'll say, Why him, he almost got a tackle On a guywthe other day. And last comes Mr. Munson, our Coach Who worked with might and main, To make l.good team out of us, And Succeeded with some pain. ckle, , By Bill Covert Sports Editor Q OUR BASKETBALL TEAM The basketball team started the season of 1947-48 very well, and stood out as a strong team among the valley teams. Mr. Mark P. Hite, the coach, worked very hard with them, but for some unknown reason the boys let down during the middle of the season. in the last games of the season they began to show their old pep and fight, but had to play in the elimin- ation game, which opened the tournament held at Deer Lodge, Montana. Phillipsburg, the other low team won this thrilling game by two points in an over-time period. The forwards on the team were: Leon Conner, a junior, who was a consistant player throughout the yearg Terry Maki, a senior, who has played with the Pirates for three years and will be missed, walter Roy, a scrappy, ouick little guy who should make a whiz in a couple more yearsg and Claude Ankeny, who will be a valuable player next year for the Pirates. At Center position: Torny Trowbridge, a lanky fellow who was transferred from forward to center was a real point- maker when he cot hot, so 1et's hope he sizzles next year. Larry Briggs fought hard ard will te a loss to the team. The guards were: Donald Ess, Captain, a senlcr, was the Pirate rebound man and was accurate under the basket, Bill Covert, another senior, who always fought hard and Furious for the team, Harvey Backlln, a good sturdy rebound man will see plenty of action next year, Dwane Clarke, also a senior, was gp eggectiveq man under the basket, Phillip Menager, a freshman, will he a Good man in his years left at Victor. with the players that will return and some boys coming up from the grades the Pirates should be a strong team next year. The track Briggs, a shot- and relay man. a possible shot dash, and relay 100 yard dash, yard, 220 yard 7444465 squad consists of the following boys: Larry put man. Bill Covert, miler, high-jumper, Don Ess, who throws the Javelin, discus and put man. Terry Maki, a half-miler, 220 yard man. Carroll Mansfield, half-miler, 220 and and possible relay man. Leon Conner, 100 , ALO yard dash man, besides the broad jump, and a relay man. Tom Trowbridge, a high-jumper and pole- vaulter. Harvey Baoklin, a pole vaulter. Alfred Larson a hurdler and Phillip Manager a weight man. The Pirate track squad should give plenty of competi- tion to the other squads of the valley besides all squads entering in the invltationalv trackhneet- The Squad 10593 two men off of last year's team--George Jobe and Jim MoGillen. They both placed in the broad Wjump and the shot- put throw, and Jobe placed in high Jump, and MoGillen in the Javelin. They were on last year's relay team, which placed first in both the invitational and county track meets. Last year's team took first place at the invitational track meet held at Corvallis, second at the county meet held at Cor- vallis, and third place in the state track meet held at Missoula. Of this year's squad Leon Conner should come through for three rirsts in his dashes, and place in the broad Jump. Donald Ess should do good on his heaves of discus, shot-put, and Javelin. Terry Maki should get places in his races. Covert and Trowbridge can do well on the high-Jump, and Covert, will make it rough for mile competitors. Carroll Mansfield will be keen competition for men in his events. It is the hope or Mr. Munson and Mr. Hite, track coaches, that the squad will capture some trophies at the county, invitational, and state meets this year.
