MILLER PRESIDENT or :camo M. BARRY A. R. CORNFORD :Lenz or sonic R. L. HULBERT B' Victor Central School ALTON B. CORBIT, Suvenvlsmc-PRlNclPAL Victor, New York January ll, 1955 Dear Students: People in Victor will remember for a long time the occasion on which Governor Thomas E. Dewey visited our community just a few short years ago, and broke ground for the Throughway which now spreads itself across the breadth of our great State of New York. This tremendous undertaking is a far cry from the early 1800's when highways in our immediate area were, for the most part, barely discernible trails through the forests. we realize now that the Throughway is but a fore- runner to a vast network of such roads which will, of necessity, span our country in the years ahead, It is acute evidence of GROWTH and PROGRESS, hard to see sometimes because we live so close to it. How does one relate education to a theme of high- ways, you ask? Are you making a timid trail of your life? Are you distracted into going up blind alleys that lead nowhere? - OR - Are you building carefully the foundation for a six lane educational highway that will take care of 20th. century traffic? Here are some suggestions that may help you improve your personal highway construction job now: Do today's school work today, one step at a time. l. 2. Strive for a 10075 school attendance record. Participate actively in at least one school activity. M. Take an active part in class discussions. 5. Be cheerfully cooperative at home, at school, and at play. Develop your self-respect by having respect for your God, your family, and your friends. 3. 6. Sincerely yours, czQ1ae.cm Alton B. Corbit Principal ABC:LB BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Hawkins, Mr. Barry, President Ogden Miller, Mr. Bowerman, Mr. O'Brien, Principal Mr. Corbin Very few of us realize the time and effort given by the men on our Board of Education. They are the deciding factors in most of the issues concerning our school and upon them rests a great responsibility. We especially want to recognize and express our appreciation for the Work that the Board of Educa- tion has done on the new school building. We know that they have given many hours and a great deal of thought to this project. We wish to express our sincere thanks to the members of the Board of Education, for the manythings they have done for the educational interests ofthe stu- dents of Victor Central School. 9 FACULTY... We have accomplished our goals through hard work and happy teamwork, under the supervision of our ad- visor, Mr. Francello and our editor, Arlene Phillips. The staff and Mr. Francello have spent many hours planning and actually producing this eighth yearbook of Victor Central School. We, of the yearbook staff have enjoyed our work on this 1955 issue of Bagel. Under the gui- dance of Mrs. Francello, we started the year by changing the appearance of the paper and by publishing it more frequently. Our editor and assistant editor, Rose Militello and Mary McGarry respectively, experimented in the elirnination and addition of several features in hopes of arousing new interest for increased cir- culation. Mrs. Francello and four staff members attended the Empire State Scho- lastic Press Association Conference in Syracuse where a cover for Hilltopics by .Tudy Hanlon received honorable mention. With all we learned at this conference and from our experirnentation this year, we know that we will be very successful in future years. 49 STUDENT COUNCIL The Victor Student Council had a very successful year As the governing student organization of our school they promoted week end activities, such as movies and skating parties, as well as in-school ace- tivities. Interclass basketball and volley-ball tour- naments were held, and next year s assemblies were . xv' wwf cs fr K -1 1, W f-ur-L M 7 chosen. The award system, under which we accumu- late points toward our school letter, was changed by Student Council, and a Student Day was held in the spring The school profited very much from such an efficient Student Council . . Championship Section V title for the year 1953-54, Victor had but one returning regular from the previous year, David McKeag at Center. Although they lost four of last year's starting five, the Blue Devils won games with their superior ability, fighting spirit, and Coach Lynaugh's excellent guidance. Making up the starting five for the '54-55 season were: Co-captains, Dave Rector and Francis Underhill in the two forward spots, and Buddy Militello in one guard spot. The other guard position was a wide open race between Ken Winkler and Paul Mortenson. Coach Lynaugh had excellent bench power behind the starting line-up with Bob Anderson, Charles Herendeen, Bill Rugenstein, and Bernard Clark. .- T 1 ., ' 255 1. In football this year Victor has done exceptionally well. We had a very suc- cessful season even though we lost five players. We ,had to build a new team with only veteran Roger Brady returning. The team's successful year was due largely to the expert coaching of Carl Palumbo. The tiring hours of afternoon practice paid off throughout the season. We won five games but lost one to Phelps. This was our first loss in fourteen games. Our team showed excellent spirit and cooperation. Ken Winkler and Jim Ryan were chosen for the All Scholastic Team of our league. . Although they didn't win the championship, Coach Henehan considered last year's team one of the best Victor has had. Except for a few bad breaks they might well have come through with the championship. The season ended with six wins and two losses. Darv Pegelow and Dave Rector pitched, allowing no hits and no runs during one game. The other members of the team were: Don Pegelow, catcher, Darv Pegelow or Dave Rector at first baseg John Gullace at second base, Jim Cotter, a co-captain, at third baseg Ken Winkler as shortstopg Francis Underhill in right field, Myron Van Orman in left fieldg and Vernon Underhill, a co-captain, in center field. Other teamsters who saw play were: Larry Leavitt, Roger Brady, Harold Hess, Newt Smith, Dave McKeag, Alan Boughton, and Roger Pow- er.
