God honors those who never stop growing, never stop trying. Our forefathers remembered Galatians 6:9: And let us not be weary in well doing. Those early settlers of the eighteenth century, those implacable lovers of freedom knew that in order to defend their ideals, it was not sufficient merely to protect their land and possessions, but they needed to defend spiritual things like liberty and justice from those who would destroy them. All they had to sustain them was a deep and abiding faith, but it was sufficient. They always relied upon: Faith in God, which they fortified with . . Faith in Themselves Faith in their Fellowmen Faith in Freedom and upon these faiths rest the foundations, the strength, and the security of our nation today. Freedom from hatred, because hatred poisons the body and hardens the heart, Freedom from jealousy, because jealousy rots away all the finer instincts of human nature, leaves its victims embittered and unhappy. Freedom from fear, because fear stifles initiative, delays action--holds back progress. EDITORIAL by James Seay ln America, the youth has a duty ---- that of safeguarding all that is worthwhile of traditions. We need to sell to the present world our brand of freedom. Freedom must inspire us to work for this goal. The youth of today must have the will power to go forward holding high the ideals of true Americanism. Our youth must build a better world for tomorrow, aworld and a Nation we can be proud to say we are a part of. America must not allow any Nation or government to destroy our ideals of freedom to live, to work, and to serve God as we desire. Only when the individual is free to grow, to invent, to dream futures and see visions of a better tomorrow will he fi.nd the pro- gram which he seeks and which he deserves. This generation looks with hopeful eyes to the future--a future in which youth has been schooled in patriotism and inspired to rise to a higher plane of thinking, acting, and living. We must not lose sight of the fact that when democracy dies, freedom also dies. America expects us to carry the torch of democracy. We must take our knowledge, our skills, and our ideals and put them to work--build a better world, a world where no man is at war, no man need be hungry, and all mankind is free from fear. George Bernard Shaw said, Liberty means responsibility, and Abraham Cowley said that freedom is a blessing that must be earned before it can be enjoyed. For the season as awhole,we netted more yards and scored more than our oppon- ents, but we ended the season with an even record of four wins, four losses, and one tie. Our first game was with the Sequoyah Indians, played at Sequoyah. Fullback, Lewis Venable opened the scoring for the season by grabbing a Sequoyah fumble and carrying the ball eighteen yards for a TD. The final score in the game was Vian, 203 Sequoyah, 0. Two weeks later, we lost to the Haskell Haymakers by a score of 19 to 25. Our next game was with the Panama Razorbacks, the first game to be played on the new Vian Football Field. The game was close all the way, but Vian broke away from a 20-20 tie in the fourth period to win by six points. Poteau B was next, and the Pirates didn't last long against our Wolverines. The final score was 53 to 0. Then came the big game with Coweta, our Homecoming game and the playoff for the 16-B Conference Championship. Pat Wright was crowned queen by Captain Ervin Collins. The game ended in a 7-7 tie, and was finally given to Coweta on penetrations. Stilwell was next, and we played the mighty Indians off their feet for three quarters, before big Jim McKee broke away for three touchdowns in the final period to give Stilwell the victory, 21 to 13. We lost the next game to a tradition rival, Sallisaw, by a score of 39 to 21, and also lost to Westville, 14 to 32. Our last game was with Muldrow, and the beginning Bulldogs scored only once. while we scored five times. The final score was 34 to 7. Although we lost as many games as we won, everybody felt that we had gone through a successful season, and at any rate, a very enjoyable one. Special credit must be given to Benny Smith, who did a fine job in the quarterback slot, to Leon Pack, who just blasted right through our opponents' defenses g to the boys who held down those tough positions in the line, and especially to our coach, Benny Kiger, who did a wonderful job of holding our team together.
