LOUIS GENNETT DEDICATION We dedicate this 1960 Den to Mr. Lou Gennett, a dedicated teacher, a fine coach, and an active community leader. We shall al- ways remember you and thank you, Mr. Gennett, when we think of Vestal. MISS TURID THOMASSEN OUR EXCHANGE STUDENT This is the first year that Vestal has participated in the American Field Service program. It is through this organization that Turid Thomassen of Norway came to Vestal for a year. We awaited the arrival of our first exchange student with anxiety and were delighted with Turid when we met her. Many of us have a warm spot in our hearts for you, Turid, because of your sincere friendship and engaging personality. We all hope to meet you again sometime and that you will think of us often. We will not forget our wonderful classmate from Norway. Class of 1960 F OREWORD What's a Nebbish? He is, as his Hebrew name implies, a lost soul. He is a nomad in society, unable to comprehend many of our problems- as well as his own-and always finds himself in embarrassing predicaments. You can't miss the Nebbishg he's everywhere. He may be looking for his lost wallet, putting his socks on inside out, knocking someone over, or spilling ink on himself. In school he becomes the best of procrastinators, the just a minute type of person. Although he has little personality of his own, he is a part of yoursg never to be outgrown, forgotten, or brushed off, Actually he personifies the emotions and ideas of today's high school stu- dent, is why we have chosen this distinctive, novel, and new- fangled character for our Den. 4 . OUR PAGE OF THANKS We of the Class of 1960 wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our teachers and administrators. We wish to offer our special thanks to Mrs. MacLowry, who has guided and encouraged each of us with individual concern in our decisions through junior high and high school. We also want to give special thanks to Mr. Shoback, for helping us make the Snak Shak a success, and to Mrs. Vanderbilt for directing our wonderful class play Curtain Going Up. The yearbook staff, especially, says thanks to Miss Jones for helping with our 1960 Den. We wish to thank the faculty who have changed us from nebbishes to graduates. THE CLASS OF 1960 L BOARD OF EDUCATION Under the guidance of our board of education, Vestal has responded quickly to the present educational challenge. The nine members of our board are outstanding citizens of the community who solve such problems as correlating enrollment and classroom space, making decisions on school layout and equipment, and selecting a faculty. One of its most important functions is to plan for the future by suggesting the purchase of possible school sites. The time spent and effort involved in coping with these problems is seldom fully appreciated. To these nine members who unselfishly donate their time and energy for the betterment of school and community, the class of 1960 commends for a job well done. CLASS HISTORY It all started one fall day back in 1947 as most of us eagerly boarded the bus, our name tags flapping in the breeze and our mothers throwing kisses from the door. It was not long before we all became accustomed to the daily rigamarole and soon a fevs became adept at two practices which were to help them through the thirteen years- that of obtaining frequent vacations by procurring sudden violent headaches or sore throats, and that of attempting to fool a teacher by only pretending to sleep at naptime. The elementary years were highlighted by such activities as a kindergarten bandg daily gang wars where everyone was particularly careful to stay clear of Plymale's gang, and annual singing concerts where many were the flowers and only moved their mouths. Fourth grade was our first big step in advancing up the school ladder as most of us moved into the Red Building. Sixth grade days allowed us to really stick out our chests because Clayton Avenue School had just been finished and we were to be the first to graduate from it. For the first time we were rulers over all other grades in our school-we even ran a model student council. At last we became junior high teen-agers. With these years came the familiarity of being vocally ushered to homerooms. Our freshman year arrived in 1956 and we began dreaming of the day we too would be seniors-as the seniors dealt us many travesties. Our class president was Marie Yonkin, Linda Cuddy was vice-president, Carrie Andrews-secretary, and Steve Mahon -treasurer. Our freshman dance, Bee-Bop, was smartly decorated, featured a disc-jockey, and was well supported. In late june we went to Harvey's Lake for a day of swimming and rides. As heralded, spohomores our class loyalty became more evident-we had the largest class in grades 9-12. Our officers were Marie Yonkin-president, Nancy Graffius- vice-president, Carrie Andrews-secretary, and Steve Mahon-treasurer. Mr. Ransom served his second consecutive year as a very personable class advisor. Our class dance was entitled April in Paris and was the acme of the year. For a finale to the sophomore experiences, we journeyed in chartered buses to Harvey's Lake for a picnic. Then came our junior year-many called us the most united class ever. We carried on many money-making projects in preparation for our senior year-among these being a sales of beanies. Our class officers were Don Pierson-president, B. J. Fischer- vice-president, Mary Angelo-secretary, and john Monticello--treasurer. That year we were thrilled with the opportunity to select and display our-long-awaited rings. Mrs. Corcoran proved to be a very helpful and devoted class advisor. Our Junior Prom was one of the most beautiful ever. The theme was Seaside Serenade and featured a huge seashell, in front of which Mary Angelo was crowned queen to music by Billy Behr and his band. For our picnic, we went to Taughannock Falls State Park. And now, it's 1960 and it'll soon be all over, but these cherished memories of our senior year will remain with us always. Mr. Traphagen's advice, not only in class affairs, but also in our vocational and college choices has been of tremendous help to each of us. Don Pierson is the Senior Class president, jim Litts is vice-president, Linda Davis is secretary, and Carrie Andrews is in charge of our treasury which holds more cash than any other class in the history of Vestal. Among the highlights of our senior year have been a magazine sale in which we eclipsed 554100, the operation of our Senior Snak- Shak at football games, the presence of the first foreign exchange student in Vestal, Turid Thomassen from Norway, who will graduate with usg a well executed and hilarious senior play entitled Curtain Going Up g improved athletic records and our glamorous senior prom, Golden Fantasy with its gold castle where Carrie Andrews reigned as queen and Don Pierson as king. The music was by the Dick Naylor Band and after the prom, all night progressive parties were held for all seniors. With graduation date rapidly nearing and our number of high school events yet to take place decreasing, we await the future with much anxiety, but most of us wish we were once again lowly freshmen, instead of almighty seniors at the end of our high school trails. 4-1. 4,1- 7- 3 liilli CLASS WILL We, the class of 1960, being of sound mind and body, do declare this our last will and testament. In addition to its enviable reputation this club has become the largest club in the school under the prudent direction of Mrs. Dorothy Harder, its dedicated advisor. Activities such as the bottle drive, Senior vs. Faculty basketball games, movies, dances, and bakesales raise the funds which pay for many of the club's expenses on its an- nual trip to New York City. This year the club supported such organizations as Care, Save the Children Federation, and the Vestal Welfare Fund and participated in the United Nations Model Assembly. ROW 1: T. Epley, E. Lopke, F.
