We believe as a person and as a teacher she is unsur- passed. She has instilled in her students a love of country, a sense of fairness, honesty and integrity. Returning students deem it a privilege to greet her again. In her the qualities of ateacher are best depicted. She unselfishly gives of her time and herself not only to the students, but to the school also. We feel fortunate to have had her as a teacher and as a friend. As we leave Vestal, our wish for her is one of continued success, and for us, that she remain the same Miss Strong. Foreword In this book, Chapter One of our Book of Life , is revealed the happiness, sadness, excitement, and despair of our never-to-be- forgotten high school days. You may find, therein, the character traits which distinguish us as individuals. This chapter shows the development of our ability to take our places in this living, unpredictable world, for through its pages we have acquired the qualities necessary for bearing the responsibilities of life. Although we have written our first chapter under guidance, we deeply realize that we must begin now to write the remainder of the Book of Life on our own. We shall discover the innumberable opportunities available ln this free America for broadening our horizons, for awakening new and fertile interests, and for demonstrating our abilities. We know the past, we are experiencing the present, but the future is dim and dis- tant. We shall, however, strive to meet it with the thought, under- standing, and common sense we have thus far acquired. ,Z ff?-Defi 'vm-A and genflelhen. Their leadership through the paths of learn- ing has surely made our school not just a school, but a school home. CLASS As the Second World War darkened the horizon, the Class of 1953 entered kindergarten with Miss Dellow and Mrs. Tilton launching them on their school career. Daily snacks con- sisted of graham crackers, apples, and milk followed by sweet repose on little throw rugs. Nothing will ever equal our kindergarten band with the purple and gold uniforms and its musical instruments consisting of sticks, triangles, drums, and tamborines. Our primary days were well filled with the learning of the three R's--Reading,'Riting, and 'Rithmetic while the swings, monkey bars, and merry -go -round took our time at recess. Every Spring our Mommies dressed us up in our very best dresses and suits to perform on the stage in the annual Spring Concert. We shall always remember our director, Mrs. Keeler as she stood us on chairs and gently pulled our curly locks to make our voices stay on pitch. Over to the old building we went for three years which we shall never forget nor will our teachers. We were quite the actors in those days with the sixth grade Minstrel Show-- our crowning achievement, At noon, Gunglach's gang roamed the athletic field--girls against boys! How very important our codes were, giving strategic information on the location of enemy hideouts, Weren't we proud to enter the Seventh Grade as distinguished Junior High pupils? We scooted in and out among the upper classmen searching for our rooms and struggled along with our new locker combinations mainly for the novelty of having them! We were con- stantly reminded that it was we who caused disturbances and perhaps it was. Our first taste of Regents came in Eighth grade and a bitter taste it was. As Freshmen we chose Charlene Turner, Charles Aton, Pat Mc Gowan, and Rosemary Tobbe to lead us. Our dance, The Bunny Hop , was a big success and kept us all busy cutting out colored chickens, rattles, and Easter eggs. There are many fond memories of our Sophomore Swirl. In the line of studies, who shall ever forget Mr. Ransom in his dungeon trying his best to cram our heads with geome- try or those tragic typing marks? Our officers were Arvine Cady, Connie Ziemba, and HISTORY Bill Knight, Probably the most outstanding event of our junior year was the Junior Prom. The gym was decorated ina theme of out-of-doors with two bridges and a small lake dominating the scene. Lynette Johnson was crowned queen with Rosemary Tobbe and Connie Ziemba her ladies-in-waiting. Other candidates were Barbara Lee, Gail Kittle, Paula Van Duzen, Ila Burgess, Charlene Turner, Eleanor Roney, Pat Mc Gowan, Priscilla Knapp, Geraldine Ohls, and Gail Quinn. We will also remember our class day which can never be equaled. Little did we know on our way to Chenango Valley Park of the horror which awaited us. The Seniors smeared us with shampoo, lipstick, molasses, sand, witch hazel, perfume, karo syrup, shoe polish, honey, and flour. The officers who were chosen by the class to lead us through our Junior year were Connie Ziemba, Pres., Eleanor Roney, V. Pres., Jack Hickey, Sec't.g and Bill Knight, Treas. We began our Senior year with election of officers. Bob Berg was elected president Jean Williams vice president, Connie Ziemba secretary, and Bill Knight treasurer. Our Senior Play, Father of the Bride was a huge success. The members of the cast and the directors, Mr. Earl Bidlack and Mr. William Law deserve much credit for their efforts. The Senior dance, The Crystal Ball will remain in our memories for many years. A huge Christmas tree, sprayed white, with blue and white lights thrilled all who were present. Pat Mc Gowan and Jerry Potter were crowned our Queen and King. Our days from March until June were crammed full with plans for class day, Senior Banquet and last but not least Graduation Day. We were the first class to graduate in Memorial Stadium. ' This history of the Class of 1953 does not begin to tell of all the wonderful times we Seniors have had We hope, however, that it will serve to remind us in the years to come of some of the thrilling moments that were ours. The 1953 version of Coach Phil Persley's wrestling squad is the best ever, They have strength in every class which is shown in the high winning scores that they have compiled, The Vestal J.V.s have also swept all compet- itlong often meeting the varsity of smaller schools. The team was hard hit by the loss of Sec- tion 4 champion, Chuck Merritt but the boys taking his place have done an excellent job. This year's team chose as its captain, George Gabriel, one of the most prominent wrestlers in the high school ranks. Because of the early date of printing, re- sults of the Sectionals are .not available. It is expected however to be a duel between Vestal and Ithaca. This year's finals are to be held at Vestal for the first time. WWW COACH DICK HOOVER Standing ready to back up Coach Hoover are Dean Hun- singer, Co-Captain Leon Angelo, and Donald Yates. OUR CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH DICK HOOVER Congratulations to Richard Hoover for his splendid job of coaching the football team! Memories of high school will never be forgotten and football players will vividly re- call him, with his crew-cut and baseball cap, riding the bucking machine, urging them on to their very best. All will remember the determination and will to win which he demon- strated at each game, proving a true friend to each team member. In Coach Hoover's own words, right atti- tude is everything no matter what you are doing, whether playing the game of football or the game of life. Gary Wilcox repre- sented Vestal on the Class A Sectional Eastern All Star team which was edged by the Western team 4-3. Mr. Pond hopes for a bigger turnout for the sport this year, thus developing future stars such as Dick Miller who was recently signed to a 2 Brooklyn Dodger contract. Varsity Track Row 1: N. 'Y A A 6-2 winning season was turned in by the Vestal track team coached by John Pendlebury. Performing in Vesta1's new Memorial Stadium, we had the first night track meet in the area. In the Eastern zone meet our nearest competitor, Norwich, had ascore of 37 to Vestal's 63 1f2. George Gabriel, Coit Conant and Norm Swarthout qualified and went to West Point for the sectionals. We are also the permanent host to the relay carnival. 68 Row 1: J. Compton, C. Conant, G. Wilcox, Bowling Team B. Mather, H. Terry, G. Conrad, E. Brooker, K Stroup, R, Gilg, G. This year's highest bowlers are Gene Barton and Gaylord Conrad. Sectionals are held at the end of each season at the Endicott .T ohnson Rec- reation center. Rifle ! A new feature this year was a 'W rifle team which, under theliirection of Kenneth Seely, swept its share of honors. Griffen. A record to be proud of was achieved by our cross country boys under the di- rection of Coach Sid Stock. They swept over all opposition in the first meet at Vestal and in invitational meets at Schenectady and Utica. In Triple Cities competi- tion, they scored 19 points to beat North, Union-Endicott, and Johnson City. Frank Hutchinson came in first The climax of this great season was the capture of the Section Four crown for the fourth time in five years. Section Four individual honors were copped again by first place winner Frank Hutchinson. The score was, Vestal-19 to 60 for second place Ithaca. Hats off to the boys who, while participating in one of the most gruelling of sports, brought our school a great deal of glory. CHEERLEADING Varsity M. Williams, G. Quinn, S. Miller, E. Roney, J. Macuch, C. Zlemba, J. Sandidge. Our varsity football and basketball players are cheered on by seven girls who compose the Varsity Cheering Squad. Their captain for football season was Peggy Williams, and for basketball season, Eleanor Roney. Besides cheering at pep sessions, the girls sponsor a dance after every home basketball and football game. One project this year was the purchasing of new uniforms. The Junior Varsity Squad, captained by Janice Messemer, cheers for the junior varsity basketball games. Both squads are counseled by Miss Lucy Gennett. junior Varsity P. Williams, E. Lee, S. Zlemba, A. Rossi, J. Messemer, J. Miles, F. Baldwin, GIRLS' SPORTS We girls of Vestal feel we have gained a great deal both in technique and sportsmanship from the Vestal gir1's sports program under the very capable direction of Miss Gennett and Mrs. Christopher. Our girl athletes have competed both among themselves and with other schools. A playday climaxes each year with softball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, and track contests. As in boy's sports our arch rival remains Union-Endicott. The softball team is looking forward to playday this spring when they hope to avenge a close U-E defeat of last year. Swimming Row 1: J. This organization sends a CARE package to Europe once a month. As money making projects the U.N. has bake sales and sponsored a dance February 14. Our officers are: President-Joan Grant, Vice President- Richard Brisco, Secretary-Shirley Pilkington, Treasurer-Barbara Lee, College Night There is no better way for a senior who is considering going on to college to get a better slant on college life than to talk with those who are furthering their educa- tion beyond the halls of V.C.S. Because of a program planned by our two able counselors Mrs. Sherwood and Mr. Gimmie such a meeting was made possible during Christmas vacation. Last year's graduates and many past graduates were invited to tell interested seniors about different phases of college life which were of great encouragement to all. 0 Row 3: P. Knapp, E. Roney, F.
