Paul Gimmie 8 FOREWARD Time is a sort of a river of passing events, and strong is its cur- rent, no sooner is athing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away. Marcus Aruelius e of Vestal live in the fastest growing community in New York State. Everyday new homes are being built to meet the demands of the ever increasing population. In the twelve years since our present high school was dedicated, the student enrollment has doubled. Now Vestal Central School is one of the largest centralized schools in New York State. This build- ing is no longer adequate and plans are being formulated for extensive enlargement. The opening of Vestal Center's new grade school takes place in September, 1951. A mil- lion dollar building here in Vestal will follow. Willow Point and Ross Corners are included in the future plans for new schools. All this denotes growth. However, growth is not necessarily synonymous with progress. To realize our goal of greater progress, we as students and as future citizens must direct our efforts in making this growth become progress through continued improvement. It is with these thoughts ever present, that we the class, of 1951, have prepared this, THE DEN. 9 DMHNHS RATE N Progress .... is not led by the light of fear, but of faith. McPherson, G. Gabriel, J. Tucker, J. Howard, R. Ward, D. Darling, J. Clubb. Vestal Central's Green and Gold Cross Country team really made a name for themselves last fall as they swept all opposition to take both Section Four and Triple Cities honors. Paced by Jim Clubb and .Tim Howard they registered dual meet victories over Ithaca, Johnson City, Binghamton North, Union Endicott, and Binghamton Central. They made history by taking the Triple Cities Championship on a muddy, slippery North course by the perfect score of 15. This gave them the third leg on the Triple Cities Trophy, and thereby permanent possession, the Green and Gold hav- ing won the title the previous two years. A good deal of credit should also go to the men who comprised the Vestal Second and Third teams who, though they did not share the spotlight as much as did the Varsity, still turned in an excellent performance. Last but not least the DEN wants to recognize Coach Stock for the wonderful job he did in bringing both the Triple Cities and Sectional Championships to Vestal. 56 VARSITY FOOTBALL First Row: R. The 1950-,51 edition of the Vestal cagers, under the able direction of Mr. Hubbard, showed much improvement over last year's squad. Their ball handling and shooting was in contrast to that of the previous season. The Bruin's leading scorer Dick Miller, also led the conference in the individual scoring race. The 1950-'51 season held many memorable moments, not the least of which was the failure of the new scoreboard clock with 20 seconds left to play in the Union Endicott game. Vestal lost the game on a technicality, but Dick Miller did set a new school scoring record of 30 points for a single game. I JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Order: J. St. Leger, Manager. More boys turned out for wrestling than for any other sport. Coach Phillip Persley put together a team that any school could be proud of. The nucleus of this team was Jim Mouse Howard, last year's 120 pound sectional champ. In his last two years of wrestling at Vestal, Jim compiled the amazing record of 19 wins without a defeat. Vestal J. From September through March the cries of Bruin the Bear, Whoope it UQ and the Team QQ, are distinctly heard at all football and basketball games. One of the new additions to the cheering squad is the huge Golden Bear which was acquired through the proceeds from dances held after home basketball games. Featured in the 1951 cheering lineup was Vestal's first mascot in the person of a fourth grader, Peggy Lou Hill. Varsity captain for the football season was Jane Harnedg Gloria Kneen led the squad during that of basketball.. Connie Ziemba captained the J. V. squad. The cheering squads attended the first cheerleading clinic held in the Triple Cities on December 16. There the girls participated in cheering demonstrations and discussions.
