C. S. 171 W JQ Class History As our tra1n of thoughts pass back, we th1nk of our high school days Ah' They are the memorable ones We boarded the 'Vestal Fliern 1U the Vestal Central School Statlon, September, 1941 At last we were to take a trip long antlclpated Ken Mosher ushered us 1nto the year, with Caryle Stewart, Howard Jensen and Louis Hill ably 8SS1StiHg One of our prlze days of th1s year was Student Day For once the teachers had to wa1t in line We must not forget our assembly program of that year w1th Don Hamon coming to the rescue of Norma Marsh, who played the part of Evelyn Lawton's little sister We stopped 'The Fliern long enough for Mr Salmon to climb aboard We were a proud bunch when we rolled out of the statlon Harry Llndsay was our engineer, w1th Alice Mae Panza, Shirley McMullen, and Joe North as conductors Our b1g event was a skatlng party held at the Roller torlum We had a swell t1me, even if we d1d take a few spllls Th1s year Vestal Central Hlgh was honored by having the annual music festlval 1D May Our th1rd year found WThe Flier prouder than ever It was loaded heavier than ever before w1th M81H9 sending students to Vestal lntroduced getting our class rlngs 1n our JUDIOP year And then came t1me for the HProm ' We surely showed Vestal what our class was made f Shlrley McMullen was chosen May Queen Ken Warner, as presldent of the IUHIOF class, accepted the 'Colden Bearn from the '44 Ind1ans Immediately we began to th1nk of what honors we would bestow upon him The traln rolled out of the Statlon a bit late 1n '44, but lt dld not take us long to catch up to our regular pace We voted Alice Mae Panza as our class leader, agaln breaklng the precedent of former classes Mable Jackson, Lois Moulton, and Dick Dennis made up the rest of the staff When we thought about the yearbook, we resolved to make the best one ever publlshed Our bear was glven honors by the sportsmen of the class R1Ch8Fd Dennis, Joe Miller, Robert Shirley, Louis Hlll, Donald Hamon, Ralph Scott, Forrest Potter, and Clarence Holdren The SGUIOP play was held March 16 It was a great success As we received our diplomas, our thoughts were wlth the boys in the service who would not receive them Kenard Mosher, Frank Mlddendorf, Harrv Lindsay, and Vern Lightner Yes, we often think of our high school days, and wonder why they had to pass so swlftly Only now do we realize WThe Flier' was the fastest train the class of '45 w1ll ever board A 'll A X Q, , as rt ' , ' . . Neither old Caesar nor any of us ting accustomed to civilian life again That 'lean and hungry look' is gone and we are amazed at the corpulent Captain Cassius com ing towards us Johnny Davidson is telling junior and little Margie stories of the time he used to sail the seven seas Bertha Decker's voice seems to say, 'Number, Please ' It appears as if Dick Dennis is trying to decide which were his best days those in the Navy or in varsity sports Bob Densberger is unloading his cargo in Singapore Ann Dibble, Bev Goon, Mable Jackson, Ruth Jacobs and Gayle Jones are all competent nurses in the Rest U Well Hospital in Vestal, N Y where Barbara Miller is head dietitian Larry Drum flies from New York to San Francisco with the American Air L1nes while Belle Hill acts as chief airline stewardess on his snip Stella Drum and Evelyn Lawton are doing splendidly in Hathaway Struthers's law office I can see nothing but fame from this class as I watch Bruce Ellis review his latest book 'Skyways or Highways' assisted bv Janice Fritsch, his competent secretary David Harkness and Beulah Hill seem to have at least one thing in common, their love for fine art David reels off organ notes while Beulah strokes gently with a brush If you must take a peep at George Harris, there he stands just ready to deliver his Sunday morning sermon as a solemn hush settles over the audience Alas' Must all this fame end so soon? In past years, the seventh and eighth grades had combined into one, but this year the eighth grade girls had a choir of their own, composed of forty-five girls. Thirty-six girls from 7A and 7B formed the Seventh Grade Girls' Choir. Our leader was Mrs. McLowry, who chose some very pretty and interesting numbers for the choir to study. 'ith And 8th Grade Boys' Choir One of the most progressive organizations in our school was the Seventh and Eighth Grade Boys' Choir. During the two years of its existence, it has grown from a handful of boys to a medium-sized, well- organized group. After a very short practice the squad played its first game at Norwich, beginning its first regularly scheduled season since six-man football. The boys played a hard, but losing game. Because Owego canceled its game, Coach Gimmie arranged to meet Sayre, the runner-up in Pennsylvania for the state championship for 1943. Later we played Oneonta, Waverly, and Greene. The squad really gave a plucky performance in the Greene game, coming through On the winning side after having lost all previous games of the season. Our J. The Bruins seemed to be jinxed by ineligibilities and injuries just at the most crucial times. But more important than this our competition was much stiffer because our com- petitors were more experienced. There were several highlights of the season which all the players will remember. Not the least of these was the overnight trip to Oneonta. To our coach, Mr. Workman, goes nearly all the credit for our successes. Captain Bob 'Moose' Shirley also deserves much praise. The past season was the first time Vestal had played in the Class 'An League. Many people believed the team did remarkably well. On March 17, we won the championship of the 'B' League and the boys were presented with a trophy for their remarkable exhibition. The members of the Varsity Basketball Squad extend their sincere appreciation to Mr. Workman, Mr. Gimmieg Mr. Stock, and all those who participated in making the year so enjoyable. fi' E fnmw Q31 Q. 4. f1nmi3'? g'rf'W 3 3 .I L . There were many boys out for the squad, and almost all of them had a place in the meet. In track there were many things to do, such as the 100-yard dash, 220-yard dash, 440-yard run, 880-yard run, and the one-mile run. Besides these there were pole-vaulting, hurdling, broad jumping, the shot put and discus throwing. In the first meet, which was at Windsor, Vestal placed second. The next meet was at MacArthur Stadium in Binghamton. Vestal placed second also in this meet. Any boys who finished first, second, or third 1n the meet earned the right to enter the sectionals held in Oneonta. This was fiPSt C1858 competition. Bowling Club This year the bowling club met every Thursday afternoon after school at the Moose Alleys in Endicott. There were four intramural teams fighting it out for the emblems. This year all teams were sanc- tioned in the American Bowling Congress. Besides intramurals the members with the five highest averages bowled every Monday night in varsity competition. Vestal was in a bowling league with Union Endicott, Johnson City, Binghamton Central, and Binghamton North High Schools. Vestal had two matches with each school on its schedule. All in all every boy had a swell time bowling this season. George Jubb obtained high single honors at the bowling tournament, Saturday, March 17, while the team won fourth position. The tumbling club of the past year was comparatively small in com- N:-Qfglijgxfw parison to that of the previous years. Even though the group was small X 1' they accomplished a great deal. All of the girls who participated have developed into excellent tumblers, and their efforts proved satisfactory. Boys' Tumbling Club Tumbling is a challenge to the vast majority of the students ln- volved in the physical fitness program. The essential contributions which may be expected from such activities are: 417 increased agility, C25 increased flexibility, C31 increased balance, 141 increased strength Q55 increased physical courage. Each year the tumbling group plays an important part in our gym demonstration, an annual affair at Vestal Central School. Row I: L. McLain, G. Mage, H. Potts, T. Beach, E. Lindsay, A. Davies, D.
