Historically, if the movement to es- tablish free public schools had not been successful, there could have been no real growth of self-government in the United States; no educational base for the development of the hundreds of skilled trades needed in our growing economy; and no effective way of 'melting' millions of people from many diverse national and cultural origins into the main stream of American life. Likewise, at the college level, state supported colleges have given many students an opportunity for higher edu- cation and to develop into some of our most able industrial, business, labor and professional leaders. Students of today's jet age, you will no doubt be trained at least three times for a trade or a position of leadership in your life time. Mr. J. D Scoby, Superintendent One must consider these thoughts when some 90 per cent of the research scientists who have lived are still alive today, and about half the research and development money spent in all the history of the United States was spent in the last eight years. The challenges that education can lead students into today is unlimited. Educational accelera- tion is by no means at an end. It is just beginning for any of you who choose to challenge your ability. A successful venture for our undergraduates and to our 1964 graduates. J. D. Scoby, Superintendent 4

Mr. E. J. Barry Principal One day a mother asked me What kind of students succeed in todays world ? I know that there aren't any clear cut answers to this question but this is what I said: Give me a student with energy, one that is restless and not quite satisfied with him- self. Not only must he be sincere in everything he does, but also he should possess a good sense of humor and be well poised. Todays student must find a way to involve people that might help them to achieve their goals. Education depends on many things. Number one on my list is coopera- tion between student, school and family. I have found a short saying that fits my thinking on this important need, it goes like this, Be quick to praise, slow to criticize and you will see how much more cooperation you will get from everyone. Mrs. Leah Harris, Secretary 5
