JUNIOR CAST “Hillbilly Courtship Aidoxyui Uvi •k  ¥ help.'iii the kit- CLASS COLORS BLUE WHITE CLASS MOTTO ... IF WE REST WE RUST The road of life leads far ahead For travel day by day. Do we know where we're going, or Are we simply on our way? To reach a goal, complete a task, We travel, mile by mile, Looking back can never guide us To something more worthwhile. There is no use in vain regret Or crying wasted tears, What we have done remains unchanged By grief in later years. But what we do, what we can be Is where we've placed our trust. We must ever work toward our goal-- 'Cause if we rest, we rust. CLASS FLOWER WHITE CARNATION Not what we have, but what we use, Not what we dream, but what we do, Not as we take, but as we give-- We can attain our purpose true. It's not the speed at which we chase But the steady, constant driving That will bring us ever closer To the goal for which we're striving. With an enduring view of the future's store We'll forge ahead; We must! For step by step we'll gain our mark But if we rest, we rust. 15 In Memoriam Mrs. Ruth Otterbein 1895-1958 At JJa. doot, on. 4UMn£A. evening, J at ±he- fitbLu iAxujuathcu- i-fcahcL Jr he. uj-fu o iLn A he. pin . sthJLeAj HeojtA Jch ' tapplruy cjf- aJul uxdbuutj $ouftdU ofo I7umjjlX-i un icLj oj- ujondoh.; -u aumJ -OcllxJ ±hu pint. ihjuLd, HuAluoul -ajLuhJCa- ' 4cud. After several of our members had received high ratings at the Solo-Ensemble Contest, our entire group attended the District Festival in Midland, where we were given a II rating. Also we entertained the teachers at the District M. E. A. meeting at Greenville on February 9. We have presented two school assemblies; one at Christmas time, and the other preparatory to the concert. To conclude our year's activities, we presented the Annual Spring Concert on May 7 and 9 with several special numbers. 26 Auio yuipiui 4-H Honor Roll Dress Review Winners 4-H 4-H Leaders Health, Safety and Conservation County Honor Winners AutcuyiGspivi Mr. Lahman, Maryellen Drake, Joyce Favorite, Leonard Brookens, Janet Drake, Mike Corlew, lone Carrick. With their efficiency and ideas, its members successfully led the student body through the past school year. Active in the Montcalm County League of Student Coun- cils, they strove for better understanding and co-operation with the students of other schools. Various projects undertaken this year were highly suc- cessful. The Sweetheart Dance, among others afforded great pleasure for all the students. We're glad to have them working with us, raising our school standards even higher. Yearbook Staff The Senior Class of 1959, haunted by the fact that the Vesta- burg High School didn't have an annual, decided to publish one for the 1958-59 school year, and establish a precedent for the com- ing years. Encouraged by the knowledge that they were performing a service for the student body, the Juniors and Seniors forged ahead, and the Wolverine emerged. With Mr. Alger Demorest as Advisor, and Joy Watterson as Editor, the two classes feel that they can produce an annual that is well liked, and will live on through the years as a memorandum of our high school days. Football The year 1958 will go down in football history as the most successful season since Vestaburg's first year of football. With 16 lettermen back on the gridiron, Coach Wood began his task of moulding a championship contender. The Wolverines got off to a slow start by being tied 19-19 with non-conference Sand Lake and then being de- feated the following Friday night by a class B Lakeview squad. Then, when the team got started, there was no stopping them. They worked together and rolled over all the rest of their challengers, including Howard City, Stanton, Carson City, Edmore and Sheridan. Coach: Roger VanderLaan. Basketball The Wolverines, coached by former basketball star Roger VanderLaan, faced their opponents in high spirits this year. Late in the season, when our record showed 4 wins, 7 losses, junior varsity players were promoted and the re- building task for next year was started. The boys played well against their rivals, and the season ended with 5 wins, 10 losses. The Junior Varsity players completed their season with 7 wins and 8 losses. These boys play well and are prom- ising material for future VHS victories. This was Vestaburg's first baseball championship in nine years. Track Ray Elder For the third year in succession, Vestaburg's track team brought home the county championship. Then they entered the Regionals, and won the class D championship. Off to a late start because of the weather, the boys worked hard, and their spirit and determination enabled them to outscore most of their opponents. New records were set this year; Burr Brooks set a county 180 low hurdle record, the time: 22.3 seconds. Our 880 relay team, composed of Paul Flower, Ray Elder, Burr Brooks, and Jim Wojtowicz broke the county record in 1:39.6. Paul Flower set a school record in the shot put with a throw of 45 ft. 9 in. over the old record of 44 ft. 6 in., and Ray Elder broke the regional 440 record, with a running time of 55 seconds.
