We realize that words are no solace for your grief, but hope in our humble way we can express our sympathy and how terribly sorry we are about this tragedy. May you find some consolation in that Willis was such a nice, and well liked boy. We’ll all miss him from our class, as Willis was one of our happiest buddies, but we’re sure that he is in a land far more peaceful than this. In that time heals all wounds, try to remember that “The Lord Giveth, and the Lord Taketh Away, Blessed Be The Name of the Lord”. We, too, shall miss Willis very much. 7 Name: DON BROWNRIDGE Nickname: Breckenridge Baseball.................1, 2, 3, 4 Hi-Light Staff....................4 Varsity Club..................3.4 “Cornin' Round the Mountain” ... .4 Name: HAZEL CHAPMAN Name: JOAN CHRISTENSEN Nickname: Jo “Young, Willing, and Able”........3 “Cornin' Round the Mountain ... 4 r. The fatal day arrived and we were dutifully initiated into the ‘‘higher circle by the egotistical Sophomores. Since we outnumbered them two to one, the Sophs got the worse end of the deal, much to our enjoyment. We voted our class officers in and they were as follows: President, Carl Hilding; Vice-President, Cheryl Crossley; Secretary, Bernard Kellicut; Treasurer, Patricia Peasley, and Class Sponsor, Mrs. Adelaide Myers. The thirty-seven greenhorns were as follows: Annabelle Aldred, Willis Borton, David Bontrager, Don Brownridge, Joan Christensen, Elden Curtiss, Junior Crowe, Geneive Doolittle, Lillian Foote, Shirley Gorsuch, Frank Hamlin, Marcelene Harrell, Carl Hilding, Charles Hinton, Don Jensen, Bernard Kellicut, Nancy Lucas, Cleo Moody, Kathryn Morrow, Leland Oswald, Alice Miles, Patricia Peasley, Elaine Rigg, Irene Royer, Robert Scott, Bill Sherman, Betty Jean Struble, Colleen Throop, Jean Stratton, Freda St. Peter, Jewell Stroupe, Arthur Wood, Betty Wood and Wayne Young. 11 During the year, nine more Freshies entered our clique, making us a total of forty-six. Their names were Norman Gladding, Junior Poullion, Nina Andrews, Sadie Sue Thomson, Bernard Yanie, Aline Waterworth, Donald Wolfgang, Jesse Waldron and James Green. This year, we had a roller skating party with small success (financially), but, much fun. The current song craze was “Open the Door, Richard”. Also, this was the year our school song was introduced. On February 5, 1947, to be exact. We started our Sophomore year with an attendance of forty-one. Ten of our class members had left us by the end of our first year. They were Junior Crowe, Annabelle Aldred, Geneive Doo-little, Betty Struble, Junior Poullion, Nina Andrews, Sadie Thomson, Aline Waterworth, Donald Wolfgang, and Jesse Waldron. In losing these ten classmates, we gained five more: John Carter, Reginald Nelson, Leon Sanderson, Elwin Washburn and Glenn Welch. Our class officers were President, Arthur Wood; Vice-President, Lillian Foote; Secretary, Leland Oswald; Treasurer, Patty Peasley and Class Sponsor, Mrs. Gertrude Hyde. We had three class parties this year; a hayride in September, a sliding party at Bradley Hill in January and a picnic in May out at Lumberjack Park. This year was the last year in which one of our jolliest teachers was with us. We don't have to tell you his name, because no one who knew him could forget our Principal, Mr. James Aneff. Again, this year, we lost a few more of our classmates....Colleen Throop, Shirley Gorsuch, Marcelene Harrell, Jewell Stroupe, David Bontrager, Elwin Washburn, Bob Scott, Charles Hinton and Reginald Nelson. We started our Junior year with a bang. Each year, feeling a little more important than the year before, we thought we were now really sitting on top of the world. This year, our class numbered thirty at the beginning of the term. We gained two; Hazel and Laurence Chapman, but lost four old friends; Jimmy Green, Alice Miles, Bernard Yanie, and Wayne Young. Later in the year, John Carter, and Cleo Moody left us. Now there were only twenty-eight of us left. Our class officers this year were all boys. It just so happened that the boys ganged up on the outnumbered girls and put in all male officials. They were President, Norman Gladding; Vice-President, Bill Sherman; Secretary, Leland Oswald; Treasurer, Bugs Kellicut. and Class Sponsor, Mr. Keats Wood. The high and mighty Seniors challenged us to the Junior-Senior Hunt in which we had to pay up for the eats by not finding them. We had a “Hard Times party at the schoolhouse in November. Everyone showed up looking like “bums except a few boys who tried to convince us their ordinary clothing was bummy enough. We put on our class play and had a great time doing it. The title was “Young, Willing and Able . The three years rolled by quicker than we expected and we had to run a little to catch up with the fact that at last we were Seniors. Perhaps it swelled our heads a little, but l‘m sure that anyone who has ever been a Senior will understand. And you who are heading our way, well, you just wait and see if you don’t feel different. We started our last year with thirty-one classmates. We had gained three new mem- bers; Shirley Chapman, Robert Franks and Ed Burtch. Our class officers this year were President, Leon Sanderson; Vice-President, Glenn Welch; Secretary, Freda St. Peter; Treasurer, Nancy Lucas; Class Sponsor, Mr. Keats Wood, and Co-Sponsor, Mr. Clair Stauffer. The Juniors were unsuccessful in finding us this year during the Junior-Senior Hunt which mended our wounded feelings from the former year. We were struck by the fact that in November, death claimed one of our oldest friends and classmates, Willis Borton. We were shocked and sobered by it because it happened so sudden and unexpectedly. Our class play “Cornin' Round the Mountain” seemed a huge success, and was loads of fun putting on. Our class colors were selected as maroon and gold; our class flower as the white carnation and our motto as “Success Is A Journey, Not A Destination . And so with this in mind, we go forth into the world. We want to thank our teachers and friends who have helped us along the way and hope the future will bring ample rewards for their efforts. 12 V Junior Class NONA WHITNEY KENNETH UNT JOAN GROVER CRAIG HORTON RAY PERSALL ANNALEE LANG DUANE WOLFGANG BETTY VANDERVEEN DIANE OSWALD CLAYTON SANDERS LOUISE GLADDING THEO HERALD CORA SIBERT CARL KEELER COLLEEN NYQUIST VICTOR HORTON KAY HENDRICKS DON ANDREWS RUBY FROST VIRGINIA BRA MAN ROBERTTHROOP CLARA CHAPMAN NORMA LOU GRUBBS LARRY JOHNSTON 14 Sophomore Class IRENE HANSEN KATHLEEN KEELER MERLIN WELCH DON HAMLIN MILDRED DOOLITTLE JOHN SWISHER WILLIAM JOHNSON J MARILYN JUBBARD merlin wadle MARY BONTRIGER WILLIAM ERSKIN WILLIS FROST MARY JOHNSON WAYNE STEARNS OLGA WELCH HAROLD CHRISTLE i HELEN VAN ATTA RAYMOND ERSKIN JOAN OSWALD PHILLIP PEASLEY DORIS SCOTT DOROTHY PEACOCK HARRIET CHAPMAN DONALD BROWN RUTH BENNETT LOIS HAMLIN MARGARET SWITZER DARLENE CORDER STANLEY HANSEN GORDON WHITNEY LEE DYER BETTY CRITTENDEN 15 Freshman Class KENNETH HOUSE BETTY PEACOCK JEAN CHRISTLE PATRICIA RIGG GLENN SWARTHOUT JAMES BEACH JACK LANG RUSSELL CARRICK BERT CARRICK AUDRA KELLICUT LOREEN BOLLINGEk FERN BONTRAGER RONALD FISK DOROTHY VAN ATTA CLARA DAVIS LARRY DYER ARZELLA SPARKS CHARLES HOUSE IVAN WASHBURN MARILYN AMY ILENE AMY ALICE SWISHER ROBERT VLIET PATRICIA STROUP NOLAN PETERS MYRA SCOTT MAURICE MARSHALL MYRNA CHAPMAN HELEN DAILY CARLEGENESTRACK PATRICIA SOWERS JACK KEELER LEON CAMPBELL BARBARA SANDERS PHYLLIS MILES LOUELLA FINCH DARRELL CARRICK VICTOR CHAPMAN FRANK MARSHALL ON A LEE FINCH 16 Seventh Grade FIRST ROW: Left to Right: Garth Rigg, Richard Carrick, Roderick Hofstetter, Harold Pease, Jack Throop, Marlie Welch, Larry Sower, Ilene Dukes and Patricia Cairl. They really gave them the works, but I believe everyone enjoyed them- selves. The Freshmen offered just enough resistance to increase and not spoil the fun the rest of us had. The Freshmen of this year will probably enjoy themselves as much next year when they are Sophomores, as the Sophomores did this year. In the near future we will try to mend any hurt feelings the Freshmen may have toward us, by giving a party for them. JUNIOR-SENIOR HUNT We, the mighty Seniors challenged the Juniors to the annual Junior-Senior Hunt September 9, 1949. They accepted. They were unable to find the Seniors, both of the classes enjoyed a wiener roast at the expense of the Juniors. SENIOR PLAY The Senior Play, “Cornin’ Round the Mountain”, presented by the hillbilly characters of the Senior class on December 5 and 7 turned out to be a great success. The class took in $157.27. We wish to thank Mrs. Hyde for her splendid directing and spending so much time with us, which made it the success it was. 21 r SCHOOL FUN 1. Howdy Clem! 2. The Lovebirds 3. Vestaburg was the first Class D Team. The MCAA Track Meet at Stanton, Lakeview took first, Edmore took second, and Vestaburg took third. Regional Tract Meet at Mt. Pleasant. Vestaburg for the second year in a row took the Class D Championship at Mt. Pleasant. Throop and Snyder both broke records in this meet. Vestaburg has forty-nine points. State Meet at Lansing, Vestaburg was nosed out of second place by Bloomfield Hills in the last event. Michigan School for the Deaf took first with forty-five and one-half points. Bloomfield Hills second with thirty-three and three-fourths points, and Vestaburg with thirty and one-fourth points. In the two years that Vestaburg has had track, they have won two Regional Track Champ- ionships. The school and community can feel very proud of its great progress in track. Vestaburg entered its track team in the Ninth Annual Central Michigan College Relays at Mr. Pleasant. Vestaburg took third place in the Class D. There were a lot of records broken in this meet, by the Wolverines Trackmen. Gaylord Snyder set a new record in the one- hundred and twenty High Hurdles at 15.6 seconds. Snyder also set a new broad jump record of twenty feet and three inches. Glenn Welch took a second in the shot put. Bob Throop set a new record in the one-hundred yard dash of 10.4 seconds. Vestaburg took a second in the central relay. Don Andrews set a new record in the mile of 5:04.5. In the Middle Distance Relay, Vestaburg took a third. Vestaburg took second in the eight-hundred and eighty relay. The Wolverines had fifty-seven points in this meet. The track team is coached by Mr. Howard and Mr. Wood. BASKETBALL This year’s basketball team got off to a flying start, winning the opening game of the sea- son. The Wolverines had a ten and seven record, with a four and six conference record. This year, six Seniors will be playing their last games in a red and white uniform. We hope that the Wolverines will continue their good teamwork in the future as in the past two years. Coach Keats Wood has conducted great teamwork and also a great fighting spirit into the teams. BASEBALL The Wolverines ended up in third place in the MCAA League with five wins and two defeats. Both losses were to Edmore. With victories over Lakewiew, Howard City, and Stanton. The Seniors losses were Gaylord Snyder, Milton Johnson, Ed Burtch and Leland McConnell. This next year’s team is composed of veterans, and should have a real year. The baseball team is coached by Keats Wood. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls didn't start out so good this year. We lost our first three games, then tied Howard City. At the end of the season, we were going good. We had a total of three wins, four losses and one tie. The team looks good for next year. We are losing only one, Lillian Foote, who is a Sen- ior. We all hope Mrs. Johnson will be able to coach us again next year. She did a splendid job this year. 28 ACTIVITIES CARNIVAL QUEEN AND HER COURT QUEEN JOAN CHRISTENSEN Her Court - Patricia Rigg, Lois Hamlin, and Cora Sibert.
