Mystery is something that can’t be explained. What is it that makes V.H.S. tick? Why do the students enjoy their days here? What makes them celebrate life? The search goes on for that elusive clue, the solution to the puzzle. Introduction 3 Suspense lends a little excitement to life. What lies in wait? Will there be a quiz today? What are we having for lunch? What is that for lunch???? Who’s having a fight with whom? What are we doing this weekend? The anticipation of the future makes the present that much more enjoyable. Homecoming 5 Intrigue is fascinating, exciting, secretive. Who will win the game? Will the outcome of the contest be successful? Was the planning carried out completely? Has each person done his or her part? Who’s dating whom behind whose back? What rumor is going around now? Can I sleep in class and fool the teacher? Plots and more plots! Disguise is a way to hide something. It might by our feelings. It might by our identity. What really do we hide? Is everything what it seems to be? Are we as good or as bad as we seem? Do we disguise our innermost sentiments even to our best friends? Do we hide our uncertainties about winning and losing behind a false facade? What do we all hide? Introduction 1' Class Color: Navy Blue and Gray Class Poem As we reach out our hand The diploma we grasp, While we think of the memories Of the years in the past, Tears fill our eyes Because it’s all gone. We’re starting a new life, We have to move on. We hope friends will keep in touch As the years pass us by, Although it hurts inside We’ll try not to cry. We think of kindergarten And our first day, Now we've reached the end We are going away. How do you say good-by To friends who mean so much? Will there be time To sincerely keep in touch? You’ll always have the memories Of your school years from day one. Don’t think of school as ending — Think a new life has begun. Homecoming 31 HOMECOMING There was a lot of mystery and suspense on October 17, 1987 as the students and their dates awaited the results of the hard work put into decorating the K of C Hall. Couples walked through the decorated archway into the hall which led to a Cinderella setting where “The System” had special smoke and light displays and spun hits, including the song, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” which was chosen as the song of the dance. Later in the evening , King Lee Knore and Oueen Rhonda Grillot led their court in the royal dance. Homecoming 33 A Case of Deceit and Laughter This year the Drama Club gave performances of “More Than Meets the Eye” on March 4th and 5th. As usual, the play was quite a success. The play is set in the 1950's in a small Midwestern town. The plot centers around Stanley Nichols and his family. Stanley is a man, about 30, who writes under the name of Grandma Letty, fooling everyone except his family. But when he is voted “Grandmother of the Year,” he must either admit the truth to all, thus risking his success, or try to fool the press and his publisher. Stanley (David DeLaet) decides to try to impersonate Grandma Letty, but his publisher falls in love with him her. Laughs abound as Stanley’s disguise is eventually blown, but a plan is arranged to save his career. In the end all live happily ever after. It was a perfect ending to a play with one funny situation after another. It certainly isn’t the idea of dressing up or wearing old clothes that excites the seniors so much. No, it is the awareness that these days mean school is in its last full week. The rules are simple. If seniors dress up on Thursday of the last full week of school, they can slop down on the next day. Dress-up is fairly uniform, but Slop Day can bring out all kinds of clothes. 1. Slop Day 37 A NIGHT TO REMEMBER The night of April 30 was really special to the juniors and seniors. That night the junior class sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom. Using the theme of “Save Your Love,” the juniors did a fantastic job of decorating under the guidance of advisor Miss Dawn Neff. The K of C Hall was beautifully decorated complete with an entrance of balloons and a canopy. Mementos were placed around on various tables and names of the couples were on the walls. Everyone really had a great time as the suspense built until the time came for the crowning of the King and Queen. Queen was Kathy Monnin, and King was Rob Arling. Others on the court included Doug Davidson, Rhonda Grillot, Chris York, Stacie Hoelscher, Tim Huber, Aimee Stuck, Dan Watren, and Angie DiSalvo. State Bound for Third Time The 1987 “Rock’em, Sock'em” Tiger football team continued the tradition of winning that has become a trademark of Coach Al Hetrick’s teams. The team ended with an 8-2 record, losing only to Piqua and S.C.C. in a game with a less than complete squad. They shared the league title with Covington and advanced on to state. Versailles’ first opponent was West Jefferson, and it was a 14-0 victory for VHS. The Tigers then travelled on to play Wheelersburg and showed the “rock’em, sock’em power for a 22-8 win. They then embarked on the trail to Columbus to do battle with Columbus Academy at Ohio State Stadium. The Tiger dreams of a championship fell short as the Tigers were eliminated from the playoffs the third time by the eventual state champion. Several players received post-season honors, culminating with Brent Phelan and Lee Knore getting All State Honorable Mention, Craig Prenger Second Team All State, and David Pohl First Team All State and Co-Lineman of the Year. Knore and Prenger were MVP’s on offense and Pohl and Phelan were MVP’s on defense. Perhaps at no other time in recent years has the community been so unified and galvanized into action as by the support shown to the football squad. Varsity Football 59 Reserves Finish Strong After losing two of the first four games, the reserve football team finished the season by winning the last five games in a row. As in most seasons, the team really had no individual stars but had excellent overall balance. Since the function of the reserve team is to get playing experience for players who may have to step into varsity slots in case of injury or who are preparing for the following season, the coaches are more concerned with fitting players into the proper positions and seeing what they can do against similar opponents. One of the highlights of the season was the last game against Covington. In a game controlled by the defenses, the much bigger Buccs scored early in the game. Although the Tigers could move the ball, nothing got close to the end zone until the last quarter. With time running out, the Tigers got the ball for one last possession. The Tigers behind the running of Jason Stammen and Steve Bey and the passing of Jeff Subler moved down the field and scored with about a minute to go. The two point conversion was successful for a big, season-ending win. What a conclusion of a fine 7-2 season! David DeLaet was voted MVP and shared the Tony Drees Memorial Award with Doug Davidson. Peter DiSalvo was the Tigers Most Improved Player. Most outstanding of the three was the high school girls team. The team had eight members which contributed to its overall strength. The team easily won the SRC. Then it continued on to win the District and Regional championships. Next the girls went to Columbus where they finished a strong fifth in the state. The boys also added more members to end up with seventeen runners. The team won its share of dual meets and did well in the SRC. The junior high team had eleven members and also saw the girls be a real powerhouse. Unfortunately not too many schools around Versailles have junior high cross country teams, and the team didn’t get to run many meets. Lynn Jutte was voted MVP for the girls and was All-Ohio. Dave Broer-man earned the same honor for the boys. Both will return next year. Matt Keihl was voted Most Improved, and Tracy Dirksen won the “Rookie” award. The team was a real pleasure to watch with Kelli and Sundra hitting tremendous spikes behind the setting of Tina Kremer, Brenda Rethman, and Missy Wakefield. This included wins over Tri-Village and Missis-sinawa’s varsity teams. In tournament competition they placed fourth at Urbana with Kevin Bergman champion and Shane Schultz and Jay Montebon second. At Sidney they placed sixth with A.J. Bey champion and Shane Schultz second. The reserve's importance showed at the varsity Miami East tournament where they gave the varsity a break in several matches, allowing them to be fresh and win the tournament. Coach Dave Berger’s squad was led to its fine record by SRC champions Rob Wingfield, Keith Bergman, and Craig Oliver. Rob also finished the season with a 12-2 slate. Seventh grader Adam Turpen had a 12-4 record and Keith Bergman a 12-2-1 final score. Other winners were Bernie Knapke (12-4), Craig Oliver (9-3), Brian Kruckeberg (9-4), and Dan Meyer (9-4). The team ended up second in the SRC behind top-ranked Tipp City. Although the girls were top-seeded, they lost their first tournament game on a last second desperation shot by Northeastern. Tina Kremer was Most Improved, Angie Shardo Rookie of the Year, and Kelli Stahl MVP naturally. Chris and Tina McEldowney rounded out the starters and Linda and Laura Wakefield gave bench strength. Kelli Stahl finished an unbelieveable career in VHS basketball. She was the all-time scorer with 1,667 points and 891 rebounds, records probably never to be touched. She was All SRC three times, All State twice, All Darke County thrice, and Player of the Year in Darke County and District Nine her senior year. 1. Linda Wakefield plays tough D against Tipp. 2. Outnumbered But Game It certainly must have seemed like a long season for the girls' reserve team since there were so few on the team. Generally the team was composed of five regulars with two others who split time with the varsity. Without enough girls, the team often got tired and ran out of steam the second half. Also the team couldn’t afford any foul trouble. Christy Schlater played center, Stacy Albritton and Tracy Mumaw did the ball handling and Noel Monnin and Krista Schmitz played forward. Linda and Laura Wakefield split time between the varsity and the reserves. For whatever reason most of last year’s eighth graders did not go out for the team, maybe next year's girls will turn the tide. I.Varsity Reserve Team:Front:Tracy Mumaw. The team was especially strong in ball-handlers with Kelly Smith, Mindy Huber, Vicky McEldowney, and Carla Streib. The inside game was often dominant with Candi Mangen, Jackie Shardo, Kelly, and Carla. Although the team was top-seeded going into the SRC Tournament and was knocked off by Graham in a close, tough game, the season still had to be considered a great success. An unusually large number of girls came out for the team, and, while some did not play much, it still shows the strength of the junior high girls’ program. The team had a number of scorers led by Mechelle Pothast who often scored at will. Beth Schuette, Angie McClurg, and Jenny Monnin also were excellent scorers. Coach Diane McEldowney played everyone, and the spirit on the team was always high. The girls played tough defense, forcing many turnovers. The girls used their height inside and scored often. Seventh Grade Girls Basketball 83 New Spirit, New Thrills New coach Allen Arnold brought a new spirit and a new high power offense to Versailles. Although the record was still only 6-15, the Tigers were just a few close losses from going 15-6. The squad scrapped enough to stay close in 18 of the 22 games. Highlights included being runner-up in the Franklin-Monroe Tournament, a 26 point win over Arcanum, within 8 seconds of beating Franklin-Monroe which finished the season at 20-0, and a thrilling win over highly-rated Ansonia. The boys seem to have one close game after another, often going down to the last seconds on their way to a 10-10 record. Coach Randy Swisher’s boys generally were shorter than the opposition with Mike Magoteaux, Bruce Schuette, and Chad Monnin providing the rebounding and inside scoring. Mike Shardo and Jeff Subler did the ballhandling, and Jason Stammen and Shane Stonebraker did the outside bombing, especially from three point range for Shane. Every game the boys really hustled and played with great desire. It was a very enjoyable, exciting team that played well together. Although the ninth grade team was certainly the shortest freshman team around with no one reaching six feet, the team scrapped and hustled all season long. Matt Stall and Chris Groff led the team in scoring, and Lane Knore was the primary ball handler. The boys finished fourth in the SRC and really played a hustling, pressing brand of ball. The pressure defense and the outside shooting of Groff combined with the inside power game of Stall really proved to be exciting. The future certainly looks good as some of these boys will be starting on the reserve team next year. 1. Front:Trent Huff. Although the eighth grade boys basketball team finished the season with a 5-10 record, there is still much to be learned about the team. Many of the coaches feel that the team will get steadily better with time. The team has a fair amount of size, especially with Brian Griesdorn and Alan Wuebker, and has some good ball handlers in Jesse DeMange, Nathan and Dan Subler, and Chris Gigandet. Brian was a scoring machine at times but needed more support to round out the team effort. Coach Jeff Leininger did see improvement from last year to this year and more so by the end of the season. Maybe the future will be even brighter as the boys continue to grow and mature. IJerry is all along 2.Bernie leads the pack. 3.Row 1:Jake DeMange, Steve Reier, Dan Subler. Although the team had plenty of height with Eric Epperly, Jason Bruns, Jon Kremer, and Dave Miles, the team had a hard time working the ball into the tall guys. Turnovers certainly hurt as did the lack of rebounding. Based on past history, it it obviously too early to judge how successful this class will be in basketball since other classes have gone on to do well after mediocre early seasons. Seventh Grade Boys Basketball 89 Strong Season Finish As track drew to a conclusion, the girls started to do better and better. The team finished second in the SRC behind Tipp City in a hard-fought battle. Then the team advanced to district where they finished in a first place tie with Anna. People who went to state were the 400 relay team of Cindy Broerman, Rhonda Grilliot, Lisa Gigandet, and Brenda Rethman, shotputter Sundra Wakefield, and Lynn Jutte and angie DiSalvo in the 1600 and 3200. Sundra and Lynn placed at state. The team was strong in many areas. The sprints and relays were stronger than in years. Lynn Jutte and Angie DiSalvo were a strong combination in long distances. The team only lost two dual meets all year and finished third in the tough SRC league meet. The team also placed high in several invitationals. The team was paced by a number of outstanding performances. The 3200 relay team of Mike Magoteaux, Lee Gehret, Lee Knore, and Dave Broerman set a new school record of 8:13 and had one of the fastest early times in the state. Lee Knore also set a school record in the 800 with a time of 1:59. Bruce Schuette was a consistant winner in the hurdles and holds a bright future since he is only a sophomore, as are Broerman and Magoteaux. This young team has a bright future. 1. Many school records were set, but the 1600 relay team of Julie Niekamp, Jackie Shardo, Molly Moran, and Beth Schuette especially shone as they set a new school record and a new SRC record in the league meet. Also new discus and shot records were continually set by Marilyn McKay, Christine Dirksen, Angie Grieshop, and Erin Leach. Coach Deb McKinney's team showed excellent balance in all phases of sprints, middle and long distance, relays and individual events. Consequently the boys did much better, winning 10 of 12 dual meets, finishing fourth in the SRC and Covington Invitational and fifth at the Milton Union Invitational. Coach Ron Mescher’s squad won the SRC with an 11-1 record and followed that with the District title won in rather convincing fashion. Although the girls ended up one game short of going to Columbus, it was the most successful season ever. Soph Julie Francis was the team’s primary pitcher. She also set a new school record for RBI’s which was then broken by Kelli Stahl. Other school records were set by Tina Kremer in home runs and Chris McEldowney in runs scored and bases on balls. With only two seniors graduating, who knows what the future holds. Reserve Softball Piles Up Wins .. • Team has Balance Good defense, hitting, and pitching helped the reserve softball team to a 14-4 record, losing only one game to another reserve team and the others to varsity teams. Amy Hoelscher provided sound pitching, and the defense backed her up well. The fine weather allowed 28 games to be played. Brent Phelan led the team with a .426 batting average while Eric Moran was the leading pitcher. MVP was Eric Moran. Most Improved was Brent Phelan, and Best Defensive Player was Dan Watren. Eric Moran and Scott McEldowney were both First Team SRC. Brent was also Honorable Mention SRC. They didn’t receive their superior, which qualified them for state, until the very last contest they performed. Getting a superior enabled the band to travel to Columbus for the fifth time in six years, but this was the first year VHS competed at Ohio State University Stadium. It was very exciting for ail involved to perform at such an outstanding place. The stadium must have been full of inspiration because the band received six straight superiors in the following categories: marching, music, flags and rifles, majorettes, field commander, and overall band. It was even more of a thrill because Versailles was one of the two bands in the entire state of Ohio to receive straight superiors. As anyone can see, the VHS band had an outstanding year. Their hard work and dedication paid off in the end. Where is their destination? The Montgomery County Joint Vocational School (JVS). JVS is designed for students who want to specialize in a specific vocational program rather than continue a generalized high school education. During the sophomore year, students are able to tour the JVS facilities and decide if this is the route of the future for them. Upon arrival at the school, they attend one hour of academics and one and a half hours of related classwork. The juniors take English, and the seniors take government and history. In the afternoon, the students attend a three hour lab in which they receive hands on experience. Seniors also have the opportunity to earn some extra cash and experience by spending a certain part of their time “on the job.” Students are active in clubs at both JVS and VHS and may participate in band and sports. The JVS students thus receive an intensive training program to gain the skills that will prepare them for employment after graduation. Scott Barga One of the newest groups at the high school is the Versailles Council of S.A.D.D. (Students Against Driving Drunk). In order to become a member of the chapter, students must sign a “Contract for Life” along with their parents stating that neither party will drive home after drinking. The membership for the year was just over 100 members which were divided into 10 different tribes. The main activities included a S.A.D.D. Week and a “Dead Student Day.” Touch — S.A.D.D. 161 Foreign Affairs The purpose of the French and Spanish clubs is to promote the study and use of those particular languages outside the classroom. Each of the clubs holds meetings throughout the year where they would become more knowledgeable about the native country of the language that was spoken. The members of the clubs would bring in native foods for each other to taste. These days are called Culture Days, and they provide a lesson about the cultures and customs of the native countries in which the languages are spoken while they also offer an opportunity for enjoyment. These activities and the large number of students in the French and Spanish Club point out that foreign languages are alive and well at Versailles. Spanish Club Row 1: Tia Harter. Ronda Duncan. Students must have a 3.0 average, and they are then voted upon by the faculty on grounds of service to the school, character, and leadership. The group sold football stadium cushions and raffled a football autographed by all the Tigers. Last year’s members took a field trip to LaComedia. New members were inducted in April. The club finished out the year by having a picnic at Dr. Knore’s house. Success — a fitting word to describe the 1987-88 FTA year. The chapter had its most profitable year to date thanks to the hard work during the annual two week candy sale. As a result of this fine accomplishment, the club awarded $500 in scholarships to members pursuing a teaching career, funded the annual FTA banquet at Ponderosa, and purchased pins and charms for active members to remember their experiences. An average of 35 students a semester worked as FTA helpers grading quizzes and tests, recording scores, and other odds and ends to lessen the workload of teachers. Row 1:Deb Hesson. Julia Drees. That’s what these enthusiastic girls have and lots of it. They have helped cheer on many of the tigers to victory. Many long hours were spent practicing and making signs to make sure that everyone was “cheered” up. Special thanks is extended to all their different advisers who are rarely noticed but do such a good job. Cheerleading Association 165 O.W.E O.W.E. has had a very interesting year. The group went out to eat, visited different factories, went bowling, had a pizza party, had an employer banquet, and built a float for Homecoming. All this was done while encouraging students to realize a need for education by specifically relating school experiences to life experiences. The students spend half of the day in regular classrooms or in the O.W.A. room studying individualized areas. Then the students work at various jobs, usually around the school. The Marching Band was very busy performing at competition, football games, and giving other performances. The group resumed their superior state record this year at state level by earning all I’s. The Concert Band received a II rating at contest, performed a year-end concert, a fourth-grade instrument demonstration, and participated in the Christmas assembly. Together these enthusiastic students worked through the thrill of victory and the challenge of every difficulty as a solid unit. 1. Woodwinds 2. It made many singing appearances throughout the school year, performing at the Thanksgiving and Christmas school assemblies, the Versailles Health Center, the Senior Citizens Center, the Rhythm Company’s Christmas Spectacular 1987, the Frenchtown Ladies Sodality Christmas Banquet, and Exchange Concert at Milton-Union High School, the Fine Arts Festival, and the Junior and Senior Solo and Ensemble Contest. A highlight of the year was the II rating (meaning Excellent) the chorus received at contest. A special thank-you goes to the “after-school” chorus members who helped out the chorus at several of its functions. All in all, the year was a very special one not only in the music that was produced and performed, but by the friendships that were made along the way. Other activities included marching at a football game, competing in the state band contest, and performing at the Spring Fine Arts Festival. All this should help prepare them for their high school band activities. Row 1: Wendy Magoto, Amy Simon. Lori Mangen. Jenny Hoelscher. Natalie Pepple. Carla Streib, Christine Dirksen. Karla Moorman. The club has an annual candy sale to raise money for field trips and art supplies. This year some of the members went on a field trip to Toledo, Ohio. They visited the Toledo Art Museum, ranked in the top ten of the U.S. The trip included a visit to the Portside Marketplace and a walking tour of the area’s lifesize bronze sculptures. The trip ended with dinner at “Chez Colette” and a night at the Radisson Downtown. The Art Club was involved in preparing for the Spring Fine Arts Festival in May by making signs and hanging students’ artwork. The Community often came to the Art Club to have community art projects completed such as Poultry Day Run shirts. Students in Art Club look at it as a social as well as academic club. Art Club 173 Yearbook The yearbook staff began the year in August by selling over $4000 in ads to help pay for the $12,000 cost of the book. Then the staff set up the book, designed the layouts for the pages assigned, sold the book itself, took the necessary pictures, and wrote the copy needed. All this was done during the students’ free time and after school.
