Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1987 volume:

P®RTAL What is a PORTAL? It is a gate, a doorway. This PORTAL is the doorway through which Versailles students enter a world of Action, Friends, Memories, and Victories. So let’s proceed through the PORTAL. Opening 3 ACTI N Action, Action, We want some action,’’ goes the cheer. Everyone wants action whether it is in special events like Spirit Day or Homecoming or in the day-to-day grind of classes. Opening 5 SOCIAL Social life is a necessity, and nothing encourages a social life like the friends we have in school. Long after educational facts are forgotten, the friends we made and the good times we had will remain. Opening 7 MEMORIES Memories are timeless. They may be those big events we eagerly anticipate. Homecoming or Prom, or they may be the simple, quiet times we share with a certain special person. Whatever they are, they’re priceless. Opening 9 IO Opening VICT0RY Victory is a feeling we all want and sometimes have; however, it is usually tempered with the despair of losing. The Tigers had their fair share of victories in 1986-87 whether on the athletic field of sports or the marching field of band. 12 Opening SH0IN3S Julie Ehlers — President Bryan Albers Vice Pres. Royalty Reigns Medieval times returned to Versailles the night of October 17 as the Student Council again hosted Homecoming. The battle between the foes was settled on the field of honor as the Tigers crushed Lehman 48-0. The athletic contest was preceded by the crowning of the royalty! The theme of Camelot was continued as the parade was led by the band and contained floats depicting castles. The court included freshmen representatives Julie francis and Steve Bey, sophomores Scott Voisard and Susan Streib, juniors Melina Mangen and Matt Barga, and seniors Angie Schmitmeyer and Doug Treon. Senior candidates included Jill Subler, Julie Grieshop, Connie Drees, Joyce Rethman, and Julie Ehlers. The boys were Bryan Albers, Dan DiSalvo, Dan Rethman, Jeff Kremer, and Steve Duncan. For once, both the king and queen were announced. King Steve Duncan and Queen Joyce Rethman happily reigned over their subjects. I. Golden memories are made of this for Bryan Albers and Jill Subler. 2. The Homecoming bonfire warmed up the Versailles fans the night before the game. 3. Camelot Returns The golden days of old returned as knights and their ladies showed up at Camelot the night of October 18 when the Student Council sponsored the Homecoming Dance at the K. of C. Hall. Couples walked through the decorated archways into a castle setting where Z-Man spun the hits, including the song, Glory of Love,” which was chosen as the song of the dance. Later in the evening, King Steve Duncan and Queen Joyce Rethman led their court in the the royal dance. I. I’ll punch you if you touch my date. 2. The Royal Couple 3. Are those great legs or what?” 5. “Say cheese. 6. Mom. could I stay just a little longer? Homecoming 33 The Drama Club got in the thespian spirit by presenting two plays during the course of the year. The first play, The Ransom of Red Chief,” was done primarily to gain stage experience for the members. The play, based on a famous short story by James Thurber, was presented to the elementary children. The story is about a bratty boy, played by Brian Kruckeberg, who gets kidnappped by Sam and Bill, Dave Siegel and David Brown, and held for ransom. Since Red Chief is such a prankster, his family does not pay to get him back, and eventually the kidnappers must pay to return the boy. Other cast members were Vickie Knapke and David DeLaet. The director was Cindy Vogel, and the student director was Rachel Subler. The second and more major play was Absolutely Murder,” a combination murder mystery and comedy. In the plot Aunt Bess wants to buy an old mill, but she didn't know it had been the scene of a butcher knife murder. Break a Leg” Then her niece, Kate, and her rival boyfriends arrive. Add to this a strange Dr. Hooker and four ladies from a mental ward. The question is, Who is the murderer?” The cast included: Ann Marie Subler — Kate Landson, Doug Slagle — Sky Bentley, Vickie Knapke — Aunt Bess, John Anderson — Mr. Ranch, Brent Frantz — Lane Burrage, David DeLaet — Dr. Claude Hooker, Susan Meyer — Lorna, Crissy Subler — Nan, Jill Subler — Dottie, Denise Monnin — Lottie, Andy Turpen — Charlie, Linda Wakefield — Emmeline, David Siegel — Cor-dyce, Lisa Huelskamp — Mrs. Cor-dyce, Tina Kremer — Nurse, Rod Grillot — Male Understudy, Rachel Subler — Female Understudy. Cindy Vogel, the adviser of the Drama Club, was again the director. The play was very enjoyable and well done. I. Attack!” 2. The cast from Absolutely Murder” I. 'Did anyone hear that?” 2. I cannot believe she did that! 3. Sneaky, sneaky. 4. Silly me! 5. The cast of Ransom of Red Chief” Drama Play 35 The Spirit Raisers Everyone knows that nothing raises school spirit like a big football game. Homecoming, Prom, and events like those. But they only occur a few times each year. What about the rest of the time? Well spirit is something that comes through the hard work of many people who play and carry out different activities. For a junior high student, it may be a Friday night dance. It may be an assembly put on by the Student Council. It might be a pep rally. It may be the music of the band at a concert or the Pep Band playing at basketball games. It is certainly Dress-up and Slop Day for the seniors. It is taking field trips. It can be many different activities. Spirit is always there in the student body. It is easier to see at times, but it’s always there. 1. Lois Ehlers and Dan Subler go with the flow. 2. The End's In Sight Who are those good-looking people all dressed up?” Well, those are the seniors signalling the end of school by having Dress-up Day. Of course for every good deed, there’s a reward. The following day. May 22, was Slop Day, a day to relax and be comfortable. If the seniors didn’t dress up, they couldn’t slop up. But most did and really enjoyed the last ritual of seniorhood before graduation. I. Gee. Held traditionally at the K.of C. Hall, the prom began at 9:00. The theme was Midnight Masquerade,” and the hall was beautifully decorated in red and black colors. The two highlights of the evening were the reading of the class prophecy in which almost every senior was kidded and then the epitome of the evening, the crowning of the King and Queen. The court consisted of Lois Schlater, Julie Grieshop, Joyce Rethman, Jill Subler, Julie Ehlers, Dan DiSalvo, Bryan Albers, Dan Rethman, Jeff Marshal, and Steve Duncan. Joyce Rethman added the queen’s crown to her Homecoming title and was joined by Dan Rethman. The dancing then continued until 11:30. Then the After-Prom was begun soon after. It was truly an evening of memories. 1. Joyce and Dan enjoy the traditional royal dance. 2. Joyce Rindler. the 1986 queen, congratulates Joyce. 3.Front:Lois Schlater. It was graduation for the seniors and the one hundreth commencement in V.H.S. history. It certainly seemed to be a blessed day as dark, threatening weather cleared up by 1:30 and the ceremonies went off without a hitch at Hole Field. Cross Country 73 Ten Game Streak District Champions Varsity girls' sports started off with a flourish as the Varsity Volleyball team had an outstanding season. The team had an unusual amount of height with Kelly Stahl, Lois Schlater, Sundra Wakefield, and Janet Gehret. With the good setting of Kim Oldiges and Chris Goubeaux, the team had the makings of a powerful spiking squad. Although the girls may have lacked a little in speed for floor coverage, they surely did pound the ball down their opponents’ throats. Even though Coach Kay Holfinger and her team ended up in fourth place in the S.R.C. race with a 40 record, the squad went on a ten game victory streak and swept to the district championship. This was followed with a win over Zane Trace in regional play before the girls lost the regional championship game to Fairlawn. All this was done despite losing Kim Oldiges in an automobile accident. The freshmen-sophomores laden team combined good overall speed for a smothering floor coverage and enough height to spike. Chris McEldowney led the team in bumps, Missy Wakefield in sets, and Linda Wakefield led in two categories, spikes and serves for points. The young reserves showed an uncanny ability to win the close games, going 6-I in three set matches. A big problem was that the team had no head coach for a while; therefore, Mrs. Holfinger helped out. After Deb Nelson signed on as the new coach, the next problem was the number of girls. Having twenty girls, including many rookies, was good for enthusiasm and bad for getting playing time and cohesion as a team. The schedule started with three straight losses, but a blowout of Bradford got the team going. The team then completed the regular season with a 6-1 record before winning one and losing one in the S.R.C. tournament for an overall 8-6 record. I. Row I: Stacy Albritton. Lois Ehlers. Coach Nelson was well pleased with the team’s height and hustle. The team won all its home games and of the three losses, only one was to a Southwest Rivers opponent, Covington. Coach Al Hetrick's squad was figured to be good before the season began, but no one expected an undefeated regular season and several big playoff victories. The Tigers started with some close victories led by a rock-solid defense. Gradually the offense came around, and the Tigers got tougher and tougher. Extremely close victories over AAA Piqua and nail biters over Coldwater and Tipp City electified the community. After a perfect 7-0 S.R.C. slate, the area's top-rated team easily won its first playoff game against West Jefferson. This set up the most eagerly awaited game in Versailles history. The Tigers finally got a chance to play Arcanum, Darke County’s only other undefeated team. The question of the county’s superior team was finally answered on the playing field with a resounding 17-2 Tiger victory. The dream of a state championship lived on for another week. Then Versailles, after constantly fighting back and taking the lead, lost in the last two minutes to Columbus Hartley which then easily won the state championship. Few doubted that Versailles was at least the second best team in the state. The football team left the community a season of unforgettable thrills. I. Coach Hetrick figures up more strategy. 2. The reserve team showed this improvement by putting together an excellent 6-2 record. According to Coach Schmitz, most of the team should gain varsity time if they continue to improve. Who plays on the reserve team? Generally the team is composed of underclassmen who simply are not yet big enough or have not yet gained enough experience to play varsity. Why is the high school football program so successful year after year. There are many factors, but one is surely the learning the players acquire in junior high. Here the basis is laid, unlike other schools where the players may have first started playing in leagues before junior high. The seventh and eighth grade teams again had successful seasons despite being outsized by almost all the opposition. The eighth grade team was sparked b running back Peter DiSalvo who had a fabulous season until it ended on a somber note when he suffered a severely broken leg in the last game against L.T.Ball. After losing their first game to a huge Miami East team, the young Tigers ran off six straight wins to finish at 6-1. Just like their high school counterparts, they won with defense, outscoring the opposition 140-41 in those victories. The seventh graders followed the same pattern of losing their first game but came back to win the other two. Again the team was small but tough. Junior High Football 89 Strong Individuals Lead Team to Good Record Any athletic team is only as good as the individuals on that team, and that was well shown by the varsity wrestling team. Coach Glasscoe welcomed back a fairly young team with some major question marks. The team showed its strength thoughout the season by coming up with a 13-4 dual meet record. The squad was second at both the Miami East and Covington Invitationals, second at the district. third at the regional, and third in the S.R.C. meet which probably was stronger than any other league around. How did the team fare so well? The answer is easy to find, strong individual performances by both seniors and sophomores in particular. Individual honors were plentiful. S.R.C. champions included sophomores Aaron Moran and Ron Grisez and senior Bryan Albers. District champions were Aaron and Ron and fellow sophomore Ron Rismiller. Regional champion was Aaron Moran. Aaron and senior Dan Rethman also qualified for the state meet. Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association First Team wrestler was Bryan Albers in the 145 pound weight class, Aaron Moran was Second Team 138 pound wrestler, and Ron Grisez was Honorable Mention in the 167 pound class. New team records were set by Aaron Moran with the best season record, an amazing 23-1, and by Bryan Albers for most takedowns in a season, 76. Individual team awards went to Aaron Moran for Most Valuable Wrestler, Ron Grisez for Most Improved Wrestler, Ron Rismiller for Rookie, and Ron Grisez also earned the Most Pins award. I. Varsity Wrestling 91 Reserve Wrestlers Learn Coach Berger’s reserve wrestlers followed the usual pattern by not wrestling very often since not too many schools have enough wrestlers to form a reserve team. So their function is to wrestle hard in practice and try to beat the varsity man and move up to that level. Some of the reserves started on the reserves and then moved up to the varsity either through injury, weight problems, or just wrestling better. It was an awful lot of hard work and not much glory. Grapplers Roll” On Again Coach Bill Roll again showed why his junior high wrestlers are so tough year after year. The young Tigers were 4-1 in dual meets, won one invitational at Ur-bana. were second at the Milton-Union Invitational, and won the S.R.C. With a full contingent of 24 wrestlers, the Tigers were strong in all the weight classes, especially the lighter and middle weight classes with Kevin Bergman, AJ. Included in the victories was an action-packed, wild, crowd-pleasing win over neighbor Bradford. Then the fun started. The Lady Tigers started tournament play. The tournament trail included another hard victory over Bradford and a win over second-seeded Botkins. The Lady Tigers went on to win the sectional and district championships at Sidney and Vandalia. The tournament and season came to an end in Xenia against the Riverside Pirates, one of the state's top-rated teams. The squad ended with a 21-4 record, the best in many years. Girls Varsity Basketball 95 Reserves Manage Winning Record Despite Youth The girls’ reserve team managed a 10-9 record which is quite good considering the fact that two freshmen and two sophomores saw quite a bit of varsity action. Coach Mark Barga saw Chris and Tina McEldowney play less reserve ball and practically all varsity as the season wore on. Sundra Wakefield played some of each. Cindy Broerman was the steadying, scoring punch for the reserves. She, Laura and Linda Wakefield, and Susan Streib played the majority of time for the reserves. The team displayed a scrappy defense but had trouble scoring in games against Marion and Ansonia. Eighth Graders Finish Well The beginning of the basketball season was nothing to write home about for new coach Jim Shardo and the eighth grade girls. The team started with only two wins out of the first eight decisions. Then a close win over Miami East turned the season around, and the girls won six of their last eight. Two of those wins came in the S.R.C. tournament where the addition of Carla Streib from the seventh grade added the needed ball handling and defense. Although the team lost in the championship game to Tipp Central, they played very well. Standouts included Angie Shardo under the basket along with Noel Monnin and Krista Schmitz. Awesome Painful Season of Close Losses Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades,” goes an old saying. Nowhere was that more true than in the boys’ basketball team. So many games saw the varsity with a lead in the third or fourth quarters but unable to hold that lead. At least six games saw the Tigers close to victory but losing on their way to a 2-20 season. The loss of 6’5” sophomore Lewie Stahl for over a month with a broken hand didn’t help Coach Mescher’s team. Jeff Marshal and Craig Prenger teamed to lead the team in rebounding while sophs Stahl, Scott McEldowney, and senior Matt Watren often led in scoring. Kevin Berger added scoring off the bench and Dan DiSalvo had some big games. The team really fought hard but just never seemed to get the big breaks or stop the opponents when they had to do so. It was surely a frustrating season for the players, coaches, and fans alike. I.Jeff Marshal scores from underneath against Tri-Village. Well, the Freshmen Basketball team provided that excitement! Coach Roger McEldowney had a very small team with only two average sized boys. So he went to a pressing zone defense and used the team's quickness. Some teams even had a hard time bringing the ball up the floor. This tight defense and a patient offense that took the fast break off turnovers helped the short team finish 10-9 and the finals in the S.R.C. tournament. It was an exceptionally interesting team. Few in Numbers But Big In Heart Unfortunately the Junior High Boys Track continued the tendency of the last few years by boys staying away in droves. So few boys came out for track that their scores were a meaningless reflection of their performances. With only ten boys ready to run at the beginning of the season, individual performances meant much more. Several individuals showed their mettle and really scored well. A.J. Bey had an outstanding year in the mile and won many times. Newcomer Chris Gigandet was a good sprinter as was Trent Huff. Noah Moran teamed in strong relay teams and Neil Shepherd was strong in field events. Donnie Short ran the last six weeks and was a good distance runner. Coach Glasscoe was certainly proud of the guts and spirit of these boys who gave all they had. The Tigers fell behind early behind ace pitcher Chris Derr but came back to win 4-3 in a controversial, hard-fought game. Outside the S.R.C.though, the team was a strange 7-9 team — more like Clark Kent. No one knew which team to expect from day to day. Matt Watren led the team in hits and batting average, .426. Pat Custenborder and Chris Derr tied in runs scored, and Matt had 22 RBI’s. Chris was 5-0 in the S.R.C. in pitching and 6-2 overall. He led the team in E.R.A. with a 1.99 and 1.59 in the S.R.C. Few people realize how difficult it is to be a cheerleader. First comes the difficult part of tryouts. Once one is selected, she may go to summer camp. Then during school there is practise at least once a week. Before the big game or meet, there are signs to be made and lockers to be decorated. Sometimes store windows are painted uptown. Pep assemblies must be prepared. Finally comes the big game. It seems like little enough reward for all the work. Also the cheerleaders must keep their grades up and remain eligible just like any athlete. All the various squads deserve the school’s praise. Cheerleaders are tops! Varsity Football. The season started off well with practices in July and a very productive camp in the beginning of August. The band sponsored the largest and most successful Versailles Marching Band Invitational in its short, four year history. Even after capturing several honors and awards throughout the season, the VHS Marching Band came up short by one-half point of making the illusive goal of a superior rating which would have sent the band to the state finals. The band, largely inexperienced, learned a lot and should improve for next year’s competition. During the junior and senior years, they get on the bus at about 7=20 each morning and return about 3:20. About half of their day is spent in classrooms studying academic subjects, and half is spent on specific job skills. Seniors also spend a certain part of their time on the job. Students join clubs at the J.V.S. and may also play sports back at Versailles. Other senior students other than those shown include Lisa Marshal in Dental Assistant and Phil Stutz in Heating and Air Conditioning. 3. Judy Marshal — Community and Home 126 I. Under Ron Mescher, the students also spend half the day in the regular classrooms or in the O.W.A. room studying indiviualized areas. Then the students work at various jobs, usually around the school. The program is primarily designed to help the student who either does not like the regular classroom or has problems in certain areas of study. Students must apply to the program and be accepted. In this program which is for primarily juniors and seniors, the students spend half a day in the classroom with Dave Schmitz studying various subjects like social studies, math, English, etc. Then the last half of the day the students go to different jobs around the town. Jobs are always hard to find and keep, but the students learn the skills necessary for success in life, such as punctuality, dependability, responsibility, and money management. O.W.E. certainly improves the students’ chances of graduation and future employment. Row I: Eric Mangen. Brad Miller. Bob Frantz, Todd Deeter Row 2: Jeff Rismiller. Don Francis. Under Sam Custer, the group has been very successful. Individuals took three firsts and four thirds in the county competition, four firsts and five seconds in the district awards and was first in rural land judging, took two firsts in the state judging contests, had two State Farmer Degrees, had an American Farmer Degree recipient, a national winner in production ag. proficiency. and placed twenty-second in the nation in livestock judging team. Other accomplishments included nineteen members attending the state FFA convention, six attending the national convention, holding a Food for America program, the junior high ag. program. National FFA Week activities, and two members attending the State FFA Camp. If the Future Farmers continue to haul home awards, they may have to add on to the ag. room. The Spanish Club and the French Club held meetings throughout the year. During the meetings, the clubs would become more knowledgeable about the native country of the language that was spoken. These meetings were called Culture Days. The members of the clubs would bring in native foods for each other to taste. For example, during a Spanish Culture Day, the members would bring food in such as tacos, Spanish cookies, etc. Also the clubs held bake sales to raise money which was used for a pizza party, a picnic in the park, and a donation to the Community Scholarship Fund.
