Zhis magic can be seen in the lasting friendships that develop between team members, in the hardwork and dedication put forth by all, and especially in winning with the pride and dignity that only Versailles could show. This year, the spirit soared throughout the high school. Students used their imaginations and did some pretty wild and crazy things to show their support. Even some of the teachers got in on the act to show just how much spirit they had. The cheerleaders came up with some great ideas to brighten up many Fridays during the year. Backwards Day, Toga Day, Hat Day, Shades Day, Stuffed Animal Day, and Orange and Black Day are just a few of those great ideas. All in all, this 1985 school year was a huge success not only because of the wins, but also because each individual possessed and gave off so much spirit and electricity! 56 Team Defies Odds RESERVE Versailles 6 Versailles 0 Versailles 8 Versailles 27 Versailles 6 Versailles 14 Versailles 16 Versailles 6 Piqua Coldwater Miami East Graham Tipp City Milton-Union Lehman Covington 58 1) Mo looks for an open receiver. 2) The Reserve watch intensely. 3) Scott Dieringer looks for an open hole. 4) All eyes are on Mo. 5) Coach Hetrick and Coach Donnelly discuss the plans of another victory. 6) Spidey snares another pass on route to setting a new school record of 35 catches. Even though the team lacked experience and size, it roared to a 2-0 victory over Marion Local. The Tigers then encountered three consecutive losses to super powers: Piqua, Cold-water, and Miami East. But the fiesty Tigers still refused to surrender, and they battled back to win four games and to tie one of the six remaining games. The only real defeat was suffered at the hands of the state bound Lehman Cavaliers. The Tigers slate ended up at 5-4-1. Because of cross country’s unique combination of individuality and teamwork, these were not merely personal triumphs, they were shared by the whole team. There were no rain-outs. The Tigers started out well in March with a 3-0 record but struggled in April and lost 9 games in a row. They did turn it around to win 3 of their last 4 games to finish with a 6-10 record. Speed was a major asset as the Tigers stole 42 bases in 51 attempts. The team average was .286. Honorable Mentions went to Diane McEldowney, shortstop and Kelli Stahl, Designated Hitter. Special team awards went to Joyce Schlater — MVP; Connie Gehret; Most Improved; and Margie Huber, Miss Softball. Overall, the season went well with a few disappointments, but the valuable experience gained by the underclassmen will surely show in the upcoming seasons. The team won easily over Miami East and Tipp City and the rest of the league matches were all hard fought as they went to three close games each time. The outlook for next year is very bright with eight returning letter-men plus some strong underclassmen hoping to move up to the varsity level. With hard work and a positive attitude, the volleyball team can very easily bounce back from a disappointing 6-13 season to a very rewarding one in 1985. At the end of the year, awards were given to: Kelli Stahl — Rookie of the Year; Lois Schlater — Best Defensive Player; and Bev Davidson — MVP and Best Offensive Player. All league selections were also received by three outstanding players. Deb DeLaet and Lois Schlater were chosen as SRC Honorable Mention and Bev Davidson was selected as first team all SRC. The girls reserve volleyball had an excellent season this year finishing 12-5 overall and 6-1 in the league. The young tigers finished in a first place tie with Milton Union in the SRC. Rhonda Grilliot and Kelli Stahl led the way with 139 serves and 70 spikes, respectively. This talented young group showed that determination and a never-say-die attitude can produce very rewarding re- sults. This coming year should prove to be gratifying with these skilled athletes. 81 VMS Moys Zmck JK Row 1: Luke Subler, Andy Paulus, Ted Lyons, Jim Monnin, Doug Slagle, Brent Frantz, Dan DiSalvo. Throughout the season individual efforts proved that the young tigers were a dedicated, hard working squad. Regional qualifiers were Dan DiSalvo, 1600 meter run, and Kent Miller, 400 meter dash. Though unable to qualify for state both Kent and Dan will be returning next year to better their performances. Angie DiSalvo, a freshman, set a new record in the 3200 meter run. She, along with Renee Winner and the 400 meter Relay Team consisting of Cindy B., Tammy B., Rhonda G., and Sandy D. made it to regional competition. Angie was the only one to qualify for state finals in both the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs. The girls finally overcame this at the end of the season. Tina Kremer led the Tigers along with Sundra Wakefield. Beth Merkle contributed with a great defensive game. The biggest thing the team learned this year: to achieve success takes hard work along with team work. The seventh grade team started out slow but finished strong with four wins and five losses. Although many of the girls did not possess height, they made up for it with aggressiveness. Two twins, Chris and Tina McEldowny, led the seventh graders this year. Melissa Christian led the Tigers in rebounding. Much improvement was shown by all throughout the year. vermuestsob 1. This year’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams along with their new coach, Lynn Kremer, gained experience. Although the eighth grade team finished the season with only two wins out of fifteen games, it had excellent players. For example, Sundra Wakefield and Tina Kremer added a great deal to the team. The-seventh grade team finished the season great. The girls accomplished eight wins and had only six losses. Two of the outstanding participants were Catrina Kreger and Julie Francis. Both teams played with much enthusiasm and are hoping for a better season next year. The Jr. High Boys Track team was slowed this year by a lack of depth, injuries and inexperience. But they showed a lot of dedication, and it began to pay off at the end of the season. Bruce Schuette had a personal best of 5’2” in the high jump and David Broer-man ran the mile in a time of 5:23 for his season’s best. Overall the team did their best and learned a lot. As a result, the students learn more about the different colleges and universities and what each has to offer. Also, the club visited Ohio Northern University in the fall. Under the direction of Mr. Lear, the jr high band will be able to join the ranks of the Versailles High School Band. A GJAM SZSP JOKWAKT) The 1984-85 school year proved to be one of superior representation for the Versailles FFA. During this year, two new organizations were firmly established to promote the growth and development of the Versailles FFA chapter. These organizations, the Jr. FFA and the Versailles FFA Alumni, pose an infinite number of possibilities for the chapter and were perhaps the most important developments of the year. In addition to this, the chapter was well represented in local, state, and national competition. For the first time ever, gold ratings were received in all three of the county public speaking contests and another top ten finish was grasped at state level competition in the state farm management test. In November, national recognition was gained when Bernadette Bruening was crowned as 1984 Queen of the American Royal at the national FFA Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri. The Versailles FFA’s success in competition can be attributed largely to the determination and dedication of the officers, team, and each of the individual members. With these qualities intact, the chapter can look forward to continued success in the future and can continue to do its part in securing the future of agriculture. A WtZASVje 3WJSH You’re only as good as your last performance.” A statement which holds very true for this year's VHS Marching Band. The season was off to a slow start as our new director, Mr. Lear, arrived the day before band camp. However, keeping up with the VHS tradition, the week was a complete success. At the end of the week. Sharon Dapore was voted as Most Helpful Upper Classmen” and ”Camper of the Week. Diane Paulus was named Rookie of the Year. Though the season often seemed to be on a rough and rocky road, hard work and determination paid off. Early in the season at Athens, the majorettes received a superior and the flag corps received its first 1st place award. The Newark contest brought the band one step closer to perfection by qualifing them for State Finals. The band once again proved its desire for excellence at state finals by receiving straight superiors. I guess you could say, ”We saved the best for last. 115 3 vs JVS is for juniors and seniors that want to specialize in a specific vocational program rather than continue a generalized high school education. An ordinary day for these students begins with a forty five minute trek to the Montgomery County Joint Vocational School in Dayton. In the morning they attend one hour of academics and one hour and a half of related classwork. Then in the afternoon the students receive hands on experience in the three hours of lab. The JVS students thus receive an intensive training program to gain the skills that will prepare them for employment after graduation. 118 JVS SENIORS JVS JUNIORS Ron Bohman — Diesel Mechanics Tim Bornhorst — Horticulture Rob Chappie — Restaurant Service Randall Christian — Data Processing Cindi DeMange — Cosmetology Scott Dieringer — Graphic Communication, Art Jeanne Drees — Dental Assistant Joe Gigandet — Carpentry Roberta Grisez — Restaurant Service Tena Leichty — Restaurant Service Jodie Mincer — Restaurant Service Dan Seibert — Electronics, Communication Dave Seibert — Atuo Mechanics Chris Streib — Auto Body Phil Albers — Horticulture Connie Brewer — Graphic Communication, Art Jenny Grilliot — Medical Service Jeff Harden — Auto Mechanics Shelly Keiser — Medical Service David Kremer — Avionics, Electronics Mitchell Staley — Machine Trades 119 121 Jenny Barge President Barb Shappie Vice President Holly Baltes Secretary Steve Buschur Treasurer With the Junior-Senior prom and getting ready to take the ACT and PSAT, the class of 1986 has been working very hard. Experiencing many things for the first time, the new addition to the high school family took significant steps towards becoming the importance of the future. Homecoming, the GATB test, and ini- tiation into the different organizations were just a few of those significant steps. Since the freshmen had their own style, the high school took on a look totally different than the years before. With a little luck, the freshman class will continue to be a class with style. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. — Christian D.
