ft Opening 3 People are the focus of the Versailles school system. There are the students and teachers, of course, but there are also other special people such as the administrators, janitors, and cooks. Our yearbook is dedicated to all the people who make Versailles High School what it is. Opening 5 Spirit is what leads the Versailles Tigers to victory. Hearing devoted fans cheering for one of the Tiger teams gives the players the incentive to go out there and do their best. The fans are behind them; now it is up to them as a team to show the Versailles spirit to everyone else. The images of that spirit will carry on for years to come. Opening 7 Academics is an important part of the Versailles students' lives. They spend six hours a day sitting in classrooms and spend additional time studying on their own at home. There always seems to be a test or quiz to study or a homework assignment to complete. Academics is the heart of the Versailles school system. Events liven up the monotony of the day-to-day routine of academics. Whether it be a dance, pep assembly, or Halloween dress-up day, events give the students and teachers a break from their usual schedules and time to enjoy other things. Without events school just would not be the same. ” ¥our Friends are people who share their dreams, secrets, and fears with one another. They help each other with their problems; they enjoy good times together. Images of the friendships formed between the kindergarten and twelth grade years can be seen ail around the Versailles schools. Versailles includes the school and the town. What would one be without the other? Our school represents what the community wants us to be. Our school follows the truest tradition of American education, in that it strives to be what historically, schools were always expected to be — reflections of their communities. Opening 15 9teitc6c Keittot The Crowning The Big Day The Parade Up, Up And Away This year the student council put on a great Homecoming Dance at the Versailles K of C Hall. The theme of this year’s homecoming was Up, Up and Away and the song was Total Eclipse of the Heart. The event began Friday night when Kris Bohman was crowned the 1983 Homecoming Queen. The football team added to the momentum of Homecoming by defeating Covington. At the dance Saturday night, Kris was joined by Dale Schlater when he was crowned King. Keeping Up The Tradition The VHS marching band did it again. It kept up that great winning tradition which it has had for years. Several new trophies were added to the trophy case, but even more memories were added to the band member's hearts. The work began in July with morning or evening practices. Next came band camp held in Pleasant Hill. While at band camp, Jacquie Nixon was chosen Most Helpful Upperclassman and Camper of the Year, and Julie Ehlers was chosen Rookie of the Year. The tuba section was chosen for the Tone of the Toilet Award, a new award given to the worstsounding section. Besides performing at nine contests, the band also marched at the varsity football games and several parades. Something new this year was the first annual Versailles Invitational marching band contest. By the time the state finals came at the beginning of November, the band was at its peak. After performing Moorside March” and selections from Evita,” the class ”B” judges gave the band, majorettes, flag corps, and drum major each Superior” ratings. Circuits Aren’t The Only Things That Get Overloaded Studying — an important but unwanted pastime of most students. Although some students have managed to avoid it. almost everyone has to do at least a little. There are other ways students found to get their studying done besides simply doing it by themselves during studyhall. In the library or a studyhall, one student might be seen studying with another student. Or, several people might make one person's homework assignment a group effort. Long bus rides and short lunch periods are also great times to study. There is just enough time to do a little extra studying for a quiz or to do some forgotten homework. And of course, who hasn't tried to write a report during television commercials? ) Studying 41 I. Pam Hoelscher and Deb Cordonnier helping each other out on a hard history assignment 2. Homework is always a little more bearable when there are friends to help. Holidays Holidays and special occasions are a time for students to show their true colors. Halloween revealed the many wild and crazy students we have. Though Christmas was more of a serious time, everyone enjoyed themselves during the holiday season. Valentine’s Day gave everyone a chance to show that special someone how much they cared by sending him carnations from the VHS Future Homemakers of America. Overall, there were many very special occasions in which both enjoyable and memorable moments took place. 1. Bonnie Gigandet performs in our Halloween Parade. 2. I want my mommy! 3. Early in the season the Tigers were plagued by injuries. The first injury came in a pre-season scrimmage in which quarterback Todd Subler broke a bone in his hand. But the young Junior backup, Keith (Mo) Morman, showed his talent, and carried the load very well. Finally late in the season Subler was able to come back and finish his senior year. Early in the season the Tigers suffered the first of two losses to Coldwater. In the Coldwater game Versailles had a few minor injuries that had some people worried, but the injuries healed quickly and were no major setbacks. The only other defeat came during the last game of the season against Miami East. (This was also the deciding game for the S.R.C. Championship.) Both teams were undefeated in the league up until this point. But the Tigers were defeated, surrendering the title to East. In the 1983 season the following Tiger players were selected for the S.R.C. All-Star team. On offense were seniors Don Pothast, Steve Marshal, Allen York. Eric Paulus, and Todd Subler. On defense were Gary Condon and Ken Kremer. The players receiving honorable mention were as follows: Don Frantz. Jeff Groff, and Dale Schlater. (It is noted that Don Pothast was the only player to be a unanimous choice for the S.R.C. All-Star team.) 1) Dale Schlater shows a look of determination as he plows his way through. 2) Don Pothast jumps with joy after yet another victory. 3) The camera takes a look down the line as both teams are ready to play. 4) Eric Paulus grits his teeth as he gains that extra yard to get the first down. 5) A nice block helps give Marc Dieringer a few extra yards. I) In his comeback game. Todd Subler hands off the ball to Eric Paulus. 3) Super blocking opens up the hole for Eric Paulus. 3) A super handoff allows Eric Paulus to take the ball all the way. 4) Eric Paulus goes around the end for six more. 5) Dale Schlater puts his head down and plows his way through. Girls Have Rewarding Season Both Varsity and Reserve teams had great seasons this year. The varsity girls entered the season at the Tipp Tourney with a win against Yellow Springs but lost their second game against Brookville. SCOREBOARD Toward the end of their season at sectionals they won their first game against Northridge 15-6, 15-8 but lost the second game against Mil-ton Union 15-10. 14-16, 1-15. The tiger girls had a great 14-8 season this year. Awards this year were given to Paula Schmitz, Best Offensive-, Lisa Mescher, Best Defensive-, and Lisa Francis, Most Valuable Player. Nine sophomores and five freshmen made for a well-rounded reserve which led them to an outstanding 160 record. This year’s Rookie of the Year was Lois Schlater. Mr. Glasscoe’s attitude towards sports will serve him well in the next few years. The wrestlers ended the season with a 29-6 record. Versailles sent five very strong-willed seniors to districts. Brad Scoles placed first, Nick Keiser. Dan Grisez and Brian Henry placed second, and Vernon Lochtefeld placed third. After placing high at Regionals, two wrestlers. Those planning on further education took the PSAT and ACT tests hoping to help prepare themselves for college. The year also marked the first time that many were able to attend their first junior-senior prom. The job of decorating fell traditionally to the juniors, who did an excellent job. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. — Christian D. Dan 76. 88. 145 Twas the month before graduation, and all through the school Not a student was working, not even a fool. The books were placed in the lockers with care, Seniors were not studying, not even in despair. Some teachers were huddled in their smoggy lounge. So desperate for smokes, through the ash trays they scrounge. When out in the hall there arose such a chatter I knew in a moment that something was the matter. Away to the door I flew like a flash. Broke open the door with a heck of a bash. The shadows of freshmen in single file Gave Knore the principal a hint of a smile . . But what to those boys’ eyes should they view. Not just the one oak paddle, now there were two. With a little old principal, mean and bad. And by the look on his face, he seemed to be mad. More quickly than tigers. Knore’s heroes arrived. Through each a load of revenge seemed to thrive: Now Stewart! Now Custer! Now Glasscoe and Swisher! Look at those boys, aren’t they darling! Take them to my office and up against the wall, Paddle them! Paddle them! Paddle them all!” - | jj} As senior boys gather at their local spot, They open the windows because, boy, it’s hot! So out of school the senior boys go. With dozens of water balloons they intend to throw. And then giggling they heard on the walk Six underclassmen they planned to stalk. As I drew my head and was turning around, Four of those boys were knocked to the ground. % Water dripped from their heads to their toes, They shook like trees When the west wind blows. • Tears of frustration covered each face In the other direction they stepped up their pace. . Back to the radiator the seniors went. Each wore a smile and each was content All of the girls so lovely and dear, Pouted a little, knowing graduation was here. As gowns were fitted and invitations were sent, Many school rules now had been bent. As all is said and done, and graduation is here. We will never forget our senior year. All of the time that has been spent by ourselves Is now in a yearbook and stacked on our shelves. With football, baseball, basketball, and track We will always remember where it was at. As we head down the road on our separate ways. We will soon remember the good ole days Knore exclaimed as the seniors drove out of sight. Go to college now and party every night. — Introduced by Becky Mincer At this time I would like to express my gratitude towards The Versailles Policy for donating several pictures to this yearbook, Logan Studios for photographing many needed candids, and Randy Spitzer for assisting as a photographer whenever necessary. A big thank you also goes to our new advisor Miss Bechtel and the rest of the staff for all the work and support they gave me as editor this year. May this yearbook store all the images of the 1983-84 school year tor the administration, faculty, and student body, especially the 1984 graduates. Good luck to each and every one of you.
