These students learn the basics in that field of occupation so later in life they may pursue this career. The students earn five credits a year, four for the vocational program and one for the academic program. A school day at M.C.J.V.S. is quite unlike that of a regular high school day. The student attends a class called lab. Lab is a period of activity which is similar to being on the job. They attend a class called related, which is held in a classroom and the instructor covers information related to what is being done in the lab. Lab and related are the vocational parts of the program. The students also go to an English or social studies class each day. These classes are the academic part. There are four main programs: Agriculture, Trade and Industries, Business and Office, and Health and Home Economics. Each of these programs is broken down into more specific areas. All in all, I.V.S. is a school that gives juniors and seniors the opportunity to become someone special. Coach Hetrick's squad, with a fantastic 9-1 record, was one of the best in the history of Versailles. Only a disheartening loss to S.C.C. in the second-last game of the season ruined the Tigers' hope of a perfect season. At the fall sports athletic banquet, numerous awards were presented. The All T.R.C. First Team Tigers were Mark Barga, Todd Rhoades, Steve Wilker, Linus Berger, and Doug Mes-cher, Gerald Baltes and Steve Liette. A good line anchored by Dan Caier at guard and Mike Winner and Mark Shimp at ends opened holes for fullback Dave Hope and halfbacks Rich Baker and Marvin Baltes with Ken Mes-cher at quarterback. The stout defense which registered two shutouts was led by lineman Dan Kremer and linebackers Keith Berger and Mike Rindler. A frustrating last in T.R.C. rounded out the 1978 season. This year's bad season was a mystery since all of the team members had at least one year's experience. The most thrilling victory of the season came midway through the season with a one stroke win over Tri-Village. Medalist for this year was junior Darren Wick. Wick edged Senior lack Berger for this honor. A new twist in the V.H.S. golf program was the addition of a reserve team. In their first year, the team compiled a 2-2 record by de-f feating Eaton and Russia. The final match of the year was 7 the annual faculty-golf team match, with the faculty remaining unbeat- Coif 91 en. Disappointing Second Again Coach Leugers had every reason to expect a highly successful 78 volleyball season. Ten seniors were returning from a very good '77 team, although few had gained much varsity experience. Four quick victories seemed to indicate a good season to come. However, the team played only .500 ball from then on throughout the rest of the season. The regular season ended with a 10-6 overall slate. Highpoints during this part of the season included a victory over S.C.C., last year's champion. The season then came down to a championship game with Miami East, which the Tigers lost. This loss, left the team tied for second with S.C.C., the second year in a row with a second place finish. Overall, inconsistency and lack of teamwork marked the team as teams with less ability won several matches . Three losses were against usually tough Russia, Minster, and Franklin-Monroe. The season was capped off with Karen Blakeley named to the First Team T.R.C. and Linda Berger to the Second Team. Sharon Hoke and Lisa Poeppelman were Honorable Mention. Varsity Volleyball 93 Although the reserve team ended the season at 8-8, the year had to be termed successful for several reasons. First, there were no upperclass girls playing on the reserves. Secondly, fourteen freshmen came out for the team in addition to six sophomores. Inexperience was obviously a factor, but freshmen came through with flying colors to complement the more experienced sophomores. Close losses to area powerhouses Minster and rival Lehman were disappointments for the hopes of a great season. However the defeat of Russia after many years did promote some pride. Lack of scoring from all the team hurt since opponents could concentrate on stopping the two high scorers, Blakeley and Hoke. Also rebounding continued to be a problem. Honors for the team included Karen Blakeley named to the First Team T.R.C. and Sharon Hoke as Honorable Mention. Thanks go to Beth, Deb, Krista, Kim, Doug, Lisa, Chuck, Linda, Kathy, and Teresa. We all would like to give a special thanks, to Mr. Leugers, for putting up with us and all the help he gave us on the book. There is one other person we would especially like to thank and that is Rich Diana. You really helped us when we needed it and even when we didn't. We owe our book to you. Thanks, and we wish you luck with all the books you work on in the future. 208
