Portal Doorway To Knowledge % 1975 marks a commemorative milestone in the history of the yearbook. The 1975 PORTAL is the fiftieth yearbook to be published at Versailles. Begun in 1922 as THE ANNUAL, the yearbook was then published from 1923 to 1929 by the junior class and entitled THE SWAST1KIAN. In 1930, the title was changed to THE VERSAILLES and continued as such until 1967 when THE PORTAL became its name. The year- book fell upon hard times and was not published in 1933. Again crises struck during World War II when THE VERSAILLES was absent from student life during 1943, 1944, and 1945. The passage of time affects us all. As the seasons of the school year roll by, we are reminded of the past and its effect upon us in the future. We hope this yearbook makes us more aware of the past. BOTTOM RIGHT: An industrial arts class in 1954. 2 A TIME TO PREPARE THEN was given to everyone while in school. Whether it was being with classmates in the 1920’s or being in class in the 1950's, school's primary purpose was to prepare its students for a life of hard work, great opportunity, and even greater responsibility. BELOW LEFT: F.H.A. officers celebrating in 1952. BELOW RIGHT: THE SWASTIKIAN staff of 1923. We may still study physics, typing, industrial arts, and home economics, but we also know the world has changed. Our time to prepare for this change is now while we are in school by taking more specialized courses geared to our later lives. Tomorrow is a completely different ball game than the past. LSUli A TIME FOR ACTION THEN meant competition through sports. It meant lower scoring games, competitors from schools we may never play again, great winning seasons never to be forgotten and disastrously losing seasons rarely to be remembered again. It meant a chance to both strive for the glory of Versailles High School and for personal satisfaction. It meant a chance to cheer our personal heroes. It meant a chance to be remembered. It means the loneliness of a cross country run on an almost deserted course. It means the agony of straining muscles as the wrestlers grapple on the mat. It means the competition, finding out which team is better. It means savoring the joy of victory and the pain of defeat. It means growing into maturity by experiencing life through sports. A TIME TO ENJOY THEN was often the big dance, the after school club activity. Before the arrival of such easily attained pleasures as television, movies, or the car, the enjoyment of these events meant more. A dance was a chance to be a little more dignified than usual. The club may have long since folded or gone on to big things, but it still gave the student a chance to enjoy the companionship of good friends. It was a time that was often remembered long after the daily routine of classes had faded into partial oblivion. BELOW LEFT: The Toy Band of 1946. BELOW RIGHT: The 1963 Homecoming Queen and Court. BOTTOM LEFT: The 1936 Versailles High School A TIME TO ENJOY NOW our lives today are too often clouded is still the big dance, the parade, the club party. We may see our friends by the uncertainties of tomorrow. Genuine enjoyment makes us better people, and our school still gives us that opportunity. more often now and have more activities with them, but these enjoyable times can mean even more now since T - A TIME FOR OTHERS THEN involved spending time with the people in our community. It was a smaller, simpler community. It was a community which time has changed. Many buildings, including the original high school, Lemoine Hall, have long since been erased by the passage of time. Other buildings have decayed. However, time has also involved growth and progress. Versailles grew, perhaps not much in a short time, but still it grew. The school system also grew, including North Star and Wil-lowdell. BELOW LEFT: The Sweei Shop in 1952. BELOW MIDDLE: Reed's Clothing Store in the same year. BOTTOM RIGHT: Lemoine Hall, the original high school building, last used In January of 1928. 15 A TIME FOR OTHERS NOW involves a bigger, more modern community than in the past. Perhaps Versailles and its schools have not kept pace with the growth of much of the surrounding world but that may not be entirely bad. Our links with the past are still present, and our future promises even greater things for our community. Most of the squad was young and inexperienced. It was scheduled against some tough teams. The team’s problems were further compounded when one of its best runners, Tony Speelman, suffered ankle damage and was very early lost for the season. However, the team gradually improved under Coach Plessinger and finished a very respectable third in the Three Rivers Conference. Also Merlin Collins barely missed going on to the state meet. The junior high team did manage to run one meet and gained some valuable experience for next year. BELOW: FRONT: Ed Huffman. Tim Barga. The team was unusually small in size and few in numbers with a majority of underclassmen. With only 34 men, the heaviest weighing only 175 pounds, the squad knew it was up against tremendous odds. Also three of the opponents. Graham, Covington, and Marion had exceptionally strong teams. Led by the strong passing attack of Treon to Mangen and Schmitz and by the running of Graves, Stammen, Paulus, and Hecht behind a young but improving line, the team played better than their size would have indicated. The young team could have had a winning season but for three tough losses to Northwestern, Miami East, and Marion. Although the team loses six seniors, it will have a nucleus of a good team for the future. RIGHT: FRONT: Managers Tom Speelman, Randy Willhelm. Jeff Spangler. Larry Reed. Randy Schulze. Almost all of the 73 team had returned plus some freshman help had moved up, the sport was being played in the fall and more matches could be held, and the team had its own new course, Stillwater. The team under Coach Wick responded with a fine 11-5 dual meet record. The team did, however, finish a somewhat disappointing second in the Three Rivers tournament. Next year's team also looks strong with only John Swallow lost to graduation. The junior high team also had a winning season, in fact, winning the only match they were able to schedule and play. With most of the 73 varsity returning, the only possible trouble expected seemed to be the new competition from the first year in the Three Rivers Conference. The TRC opponents very quickly showed themselves to be tougher competition than had been in the Darke County League. The good reserve team should help next year’s varsity team that sees six seniors graduate this year. BELOW RIGHT: Coach Leugers ponders strategy. Battles In Brainpower On Friday. September 27. Versailles took pan in WKEF’s taping of a new quiz show, ’As Schools Match Wits. Our team consisted of Kevin Smith, Deb Fine, Deb Morris, Herman Grilliot, and alternate Chris Subler. We battled Carroll in a system using qualifying questions as a requirement to answering certain point questions. V.H.S. soon fell behind after missing some qualifiers. No matter what the final score was, the school was well represented by this group of fine students who gave up their free time to practice and were not afraid of the pressure of public exposure. On October 9, the Student Council sponsored a magic show featuring Myrick the Magician. He quickly proved the hand is quicker than the eye. Periodically pep assemblies raised school spirit before big football games. The cheerleaders and their helpers often poked fun at our future opponents and their lamentable state through a variety of skits. The culmination of the pep assemblies was the presentation of the Three Rivers Conference All-Sports Trophy won during the 73-74 season. BELOW LEFT: Myrick about to behead Dave Fullenkamp. After initial trouble scheduling a hall required changing the date to November 1 and 2, everything went smoothly. The football team crushed Bethel. 46-0. The parade had beautiful weather and had more entries than ever. Before the game former Homecoming Queen Karen Schlater crowned the new queen, Chris Williams. Her court included freshmen Bernice Grilliot and Mike Oakley, Sophomores Tammy Phlipot and Pat Gavit, juniors Marilyn McGreevy and Chuck Hemmelgarn, seniors Joyce Knapke and Tony Speelman. The senior queen candidates were Melanie Wehrkamp, Carol Custenborder, Barb Luttmer, and Penny Nickol. The king candidates were Dave Hemmelgarn, Ted Baker, Dave Fullenkamp, Dave Keiser, and Sam Graves who was crowned king at the Homecoming Dance the next night at Russia Community Center. A large turnout at the dance and the fantastic music of Zsa Zsa completed a most successful homecoming. BELOW LEFT: Queen Chris at the coronation. It participated in six contests throughout the year and brought seven trophies home to Versailles. The highlight of the season occurred when the band received a Superior rating at the Ohio State Fair in August. Awards for the season were presented to: Jane Schlater. Expectations were high at the beginning of the season with a strong nucleus back from last year’s team and help expected from a transfer. The great promises for later games seemed about to come true with a narrow three point loss to state champion Marion; however, that game merely set the pattern for close losses. The team proceeded to lose five Three Rivers Conference games, each by two points. It also lost heartbreakers to Arcanum by three and Franklin-Monroe by seven. Only a strong Minster team and Bellefon-taine in the tournament soundly defeated the Tigers. What could have been a fine 17-1 or 16-2 regular season turned into a 9-9 record and 9-10 overall. Although fielding a relatively short team, the reserves scrapped their way to a fine 13-5 record. Probably no one who saw the team's overtime victory over a previously undefeated Lehman squad can ever remember a more exciting game, especially a game in which the winning team was so much shorter. With a strong incoming freshman class, the reserves should continue playing good basketball next year. BELOW:FRONT: Dave Layman. Kent Treon, Tim Blakeley. Kent Monnin. Luke Selhorst. The team had a strong core of experienced wrestlers and could expect a great season: however, the team faced an unusually strong schedule in facing such good teams as Piqua, Danville, and Tipp City. Losses could be expected here, but especially galling was losing a dual meet to T.R.C. opponent Graham and finishing second to that same team in the league standings. But the Tigers did get up for their last challenge with Graham and beat them in the Sectional. A reserve wrestler is always trying to beat out a varsity man for a first string spot. He wrestles just as hard in practice and has to be ready to move up in case of injury or a better showing in practice. He has his own meets to prepare for too. This year the reserve team did not compile a great won-lost record, but the success of the varsity is a good indication of the value of the reserve team. BELOW: Front: Dan Arling. In addition to their concerts and banquet, the highlight of the year was a I rating at District, which allowed the band to proceed on to Columbus for the state competition. Although it did not get a superior there, this is but another sign of the excellence of the band. Under the baton of Mr. Earl Keyser and the leadership of a great senior class, the band has continued its strong tradition. The group aided the student body in three general ways First, it actively worked toward rule changes and clarification. Secondly, it often sponsored activities such as school assemblies, movies. Spirit Day. and Homecoming, Thirdly, the Student Council helped provide a more cheerful atmosphere in school by providing a juke box in the cafeteria and a soft drink machine plus keeping the fruit and candy machines from previous years The Student Council under their advisor Mr. Huelskamp certainly helps Versailles to be as good as it is. Then in September the sales staff started selling ads. In October subscriptions were sold. All this time and up until the middle of June of 75, a small staff of 4 people plus their advisor were making such decisions as choice of theme and type, layout style, page assignments, color selection, page assignments, etc. With a smaller staff than in past years, the work was greater but the continuity was better. This purpose is satisfied by visits to various college campuses and talks with admissions people and former V.H.S. graduates. Also another purpose is to inform upperclassmen of financial help available through scholarships and grants in aid. Guest speakers are invited to V.H.S. to discuss these possibilities. This is generally in one of four ways. The student may help grade certain types of tests or assignments. He may prepare bulletin boards. He may assist individuals or small groups having problems with certain school areas, especially at the elementary level. Lastly he may help in typing or mimeographing materials. The Girls Athletic Association is comprised of girls who participate as players or stats in any of the three girls’ sports: volleyball. basketball, or track. The size of the club is a good indication of the number of girl athletes in the school. The club kept busy throughout the year. It designed the winning float in the Homecoming Parade for the third consecutive year. It held various cake sales. As a means of encouraging support for the basketball team as it entered tournament play, the Student Council again sponsored a Spirit Day. Actually with all the time involved, it should be called a Spirit Week. Each class, eight through twelve, had a section of the building to decorate. All the classes spent a great amount of time and work and all came up with very imaginative displays. A panel of staff members chose the winning class with the best section. This year the junior class won with a circus theme. However, the real winner was everyone who saw the halls of V.H.S. BELOW LEFT: Pan of the winning section. The show was centered on Conrad Birdie, a rock and roll singer, who was about to be inducted into the Army. Albert Peterson, his agent, was a very pleasant mild-mannered type. It was his faithful secretary, Rose Alvarez, who concocted one final publicity stunt before Conrad’s induction. In the plan, Conrad was to bid a typical American teenage girl goodbye with an all-American kiss. Kim MacAfee in Sweet Apple, Ohio, won the honor. Major roles were played by: Sam Graves as Conrad Birdie, Brenda Paulus as Rose Alvarez, Doug Mangen as Albert Peterson, Helen Bernholt as Mae Peterson, Barb Brewer as Kim MacAfee, and Carol Custenborder and Steve Harman as Kim’s parents. The team had seen thirteen seniors graduate, most of them big point-getters. The team was not expected to be able to compensate for these losses. However, the team, with the help of MVP Sam Graves, pulled such surprises as winning the Flyer Invitational, the Flyer Spectacular, beating State A Champion Yellow Springs, Piqua, and placing second in the Three Rivers Conference. The team is again losing some good seniors, seven in all, but with Clancy as coach, who knows what surprises are to come! LEFT: Tony wins the 880 with no competition in sight. Poor defense led to a poor 1-6 record after the first few weeks. Suddenly everything came together. The team finished with 11 victories in the last 17 games to finish with a 12-12 record overall and a 5-2 league record, good enough for a second place tie. As spring draws to a close and graduation approaches, the seniors begin to realize that their school days at Versailles are ending. A pan of the memories they will carry with them is of those people who helped to make school what it was, both good times and bad. Certain of these people will be remembered for a life time, and their influence will go far beyond the classroom. Perhaps no other people other than parents have done so much to make the student what he is as these people. 114 We would like to open the high school staff section with a special tribute to Mrs. Young who retired this year. For 48 years altogether, Mrs. Young has taught, 40 of those years here at Versailles. Thousands of Versailles adults and youths remember her as their ninth grade teacher of English. Her concern was not only for factual knowledge but she also tried to encourage a sense of propriety, an awareness of proper behavior in any circumstance. No one else can really replace her in that regard. 115 Mr. Allen Brandt Biology, Science Mrs. Josephine Bruns Eighth Grade Science Mrs. Jennie Baltes Social Studies Gary Cooper Social Stuides Senior Advisor Mr. Dan Davies Industrial Arts Mrs. Phyllis Davis Business Mr. Warren Davis Business Sophomore Class Advisor Mr. Thomas Donnelly English Eighth Grade Advisor Mrs. Carole Goettemoeller Math Mr. Gary Heisler Math Science Freshman Class Advisor Mr. Alan Hetrick Diversified Cooperative Training Mr. John Huddle Biology 116 Mr. Gary Huelskamp Chemistry Athletic Director Mr. Earl Keyser Band Mrs. Carolyn Leugers Physical Education Mr. Clarence Leugers English Ms. Vicki Livingston An Mrs. Etta Luft Math Miss Jane McGlinch Spanish, French Mrs. Deborah Meyer Math, Health Mr. Conrad Minnich Librarian Mrs. Dorothy Moyer Business Mrs. Ramona Nickol Special Education Mr. Dan Norris Social Studies Drivers Education 117 Mrs. Laura Paulus Guidance Counselor Mrs. Anna Plessinger Reading Mr. Clancy Plessinger Social Studies Mrs. Arlene Pohl Home Economics Mrs. Joyce Schenk English Junior Class Advisor Mrs. Barbara Schierloh Math Mrs. Lois Smith Science Middle School Principal Mrs. Alnora Snedeker Vocal Music Mrs. Faye Spangler English Mr. Bruce Stall Health, Physical Education Drivers Education Mr. Lloyd Turner Social Studies Seventh Grade Advisor Mr. Don Wick Guidance Counselor 18 Mr. Steven Wilcox English Mrs. Diane Yakos Home Economics Mr. Robert Yakos Vocational Agriculture Mrs. Charletta Wion Vocal Music In cooperation with the Student Council, teachers again participated in a ’’Teacher Dress Up Day.” Students donated money to teachers whose costumes they liked. We soon take for granted the bus drivers, the custodians, the cooks, and the student help throughout the school. Yet their work keeps everything operating smoothly. Due to the number of bus drivers and the different schedules they drive, no picture could be taken. The drivers do include: Cecil Routson, Don Oliver, Earl Keyser, Dan Davies. Bill Miller, Scott Seibert, Herman Beltes, Marie Miller. Doris Burns. Beth Keihl, Martha Lee Ward, Albert Grisez, John Huddle, and Claude Knapke. Part time drivers include: Cecilia Cook. Clarence Leugers, Ron Mescher, Bruce Stall, Clancy Plessinger, Lloyd Turner, Steve Wilcox, and Diane Weeks. The student helpers range from the eighth grade through the seniors. Steve Yagle Bob Zumberger Graduation Day Finally Arrives June 1 brought the senior year to an end. At promptly 3:30 under sunny, cool skies, commencement exercises began at Hole Field. The exercises started as junior honor guards Herman Grilliot and Marilyn McGreevey led the senior class onto the field. Among the speeches were the welcoming speech by Jim Bennett, class president, the class history by Vivian Stammen, the salutatorian speech by Deb Morris, and the valedictorian speech by Donna Berger. Also gifts were given by Mike Mescher and Dave Fullenkamp on behalf of the senior class to Mrs. Edith Crooks for her retirement as elementary secretary and to Mr. Gary Cooper for his retirement as senior class advisor. Finally the big moment arrived as Mr. Gerald Kerns, school board president, presented diplomas to the 120 seniors. Afterwards the seniors filed off the field to form the reception line. Graduation usually means the end of a stage of life. Perhaps a more accurate picture of graduation is the beginning of another way of life. Old friends are left behind; daily occurences followed for at least twelve years are changed. Now new friends, new schedules are begun. For some this change has been well prepared for: however, the change is still a little frightening, a little bewildering. The success of meeting this new challenge is the best indication of a senior’s performance while he was in school. RIGHT: Deb talks about respect in her speech. FAR RIGHT: Vivian recalls the antics of four years of high school. BOTTOM LEFT: Dr. Raisch wonders if Terry needs help getting dressed. BOTTOM RIGHT: The seniors wait for commencement exercises to begin. 146 ABOVE: Mr. Knore honors Donna as Valedictorian. LEFT: The seniors file onto the field ready to begin. BOTTOM LEFT: Dan receives his diploma. BOTTOM RIGHT: Frank receives congratulations from Clancy as Deb awaits her turn. Due to the state closing of the church basements, which were used as classrooms, the administration was forced to go to split sessions for grades three, four, and five. Using only the elementary building, the morning session started at 7:30 and ended at 12:00. The afternoon session began at 12:00 and finished at 4:30. The split sessions temporarily solved the space problem but created more building problems with junior high basketball games being held in the elementary gym while classes were also being conducted upstairs at the same time. Also the students on the split sessions were in class less time than the students on a regular schedule. 1975-76 could prove to be even more interesting. Miss Carlin's Class Miss Carlin. Then it was a beginning. Now it is an improving continuation. But pictures and words alone could never make up for all the magic moments in a student’s life. Many thanks go to Mary, Regina, and Jill who have tried to collect as many memories as possible to help you recall the events you find to be so precious and help press them between the pages of our minds. Thanks go to Mr. Leugers for putting up with the four of us. Portal Doorway To Knowledge
