A TIME TO END. 9 In Recognition And Appreciation Of Mr. Glenn Zeller The Senior Class would like to give recognition to Mr. Glenn Zeller, retiring Versailles Elementary School principal. For' forty-six years Mr. Zeller has worked toward the education of the youth of the Versailles area. He taught in Willow-dell from 1925 to 1930 and in Wayne Township from 1930 to 1936, when it consolidated with Versailles. After coming to Versailles, he taught elementary grades for two years, junior high for three, and senior high for twelve. He has been the elementary school principal for the past eighteen years. Mr. Zeller received his elementary schooling in a one-room school in Wabash Township. He was graduated from Versailles High School in 1924. Mr. Zeller received his Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio Northern University and has done graduate work at Miami University. In Memoriam Of Jacob R. Bruening Sleep on, dear one, your labor's o’er. Your willing hands shall toil no more. On earth they strove, in heaven they rest. We miss you most who loved you best. Jake was a favorite classmate of all the students at Versailles High School. All students of all grades who knew Jake remember his fun-loving, spirited, mischievous nature. He reached out and made friends with everyone. Seldom did we see Jake unhappy or sad. He always kept everyone laughing and in high spirits. On April 10. 196S. Jake passed away at Barney’s Children's Medical Center. He was only fifteen and a freshman at Versailles High School. Funeral services were held on April 15, I96S, at St. Louis Catholic Church. North Star and many of his classmates attended the funeral. Jake’s enthusiastic and high-spirited nature will alw ays be remembered by his family, and friends, and classmates. ACADEMICS Administration The task of being a Superintendent is indeed a busy one. The school superintendent is responsible to the Versailles Board of Education for planning, operating, and managing a school program that will provide the maximum educational opportunities for the boys and girls living in the Versailles School District. The framework and the details of the program must be within the broad procedures established by the Board of Education. His responsibilities include procurement and selection of certified and classified personnel, preparation of the budget, maintenance of facilities and equipment, preparation of necessary records and reports, and provisions for the best possible student curriculum. In discharging his many duties, the superintendent consults with and is assisted by the school staff, among them, the high school principal. Superintendent—Mr. Sam Morrison Mrs. Leona Oehrtman Mrs. Debbie Fritz BOARD OF EDUCATION Seated: Elaine Seger, Jerry Kerns— President; Leona Oelirtman— Clerk-Treasurer; Standing: Ber- nard Eilerman, Orville Borchers— Vice President; Joseph Henry Principal—Mr. Dan Raisch Besides assisting the superintendent in his selection of teachers and curriculum, the high school principal works closely with the teachers in making school improvements. The principal has close contact with the students and works continually to improve communications between students, staff and administration. Our superintendent, Mr. Sam Morrison; our principal, Mr. Dan Raisch; and our assistant principal, Mr. Cary Huelskamp; as well as the Board of Education, share the responsibility of keeping the Versailles school district one of the most efficient and well-organized in the area. Assistant Principal— Mr. Gary Huelskamp Mrs. Miriam Harmon Mrs. Marilyn Swallow No school can function without an efficient office system. V.H.S. is fortunate to have two well-organized offices at its disposal. VVe owe much to our secretaries, Mrs. Leona Oehrtman, Mrs. Miriam Harman, Mrs. Debbie Fritz, and Mrs. Marilyn Swallow, who often work behind the scenes, but whose help we could not do without. 15 The job of the guidance counselors is a full-time one. Their work continues throughout the summer months, scheduling students for school in the fall. When school resumes, the guidance counselors are again busy with their duties, among them, assisting seniors with college plans, recommending scholarships, counseling individual students, providing career information, placing students in available jobs, arranging parent conferences and various testing programs, as well as arranging for summer school when school again closes. Our guidance counselors, Mrs. Laura Paulus and Mr. Mike Gant work long and hard hours arranging for students the best possible scheduling and career counseling. Mrs. Laura Paulus Mr. Conrad Minnich A library is a place which contains a collection of books or other literary material for reference or study. Since a library is so essential to the student, it must be well-run and the librarian must be efficient. V.H.S. is fortunate to have both. Mr. Conrad Minnich and his staff of assistants are always ready to help a student in finding the information he needs. 16 Seated—Mrs. Esther Straushaugh. Mrs. Mary Hecht, Mrs. Ethel Wulbur Standing—Mrs. Mildred Miller, Mrs. Betty DeMange Mr. Joe Varner, Mr. VVebh VlcEI-downev Bus Drivers—Earl Keyser, John Huddle, Claude Knapke, Don Oliver, Edgar Oehrtman, Martha Ward, Marie Miller, Bruce Stall, Clancy Plessinger, Doris Burns, Herman Baltes, Albert Grise , Cecil Routson, Dan Davies, Clarence I.eugers, Jeff Westfall, C. Scott Seibert, Shorty Keller, Beth Keihl, A1 Hetrick, and Bill Schuette. Cookery is the art and science of cleaning, flavoring, mixing, shaping, and preparing food for eating. The task of preparing a lunch program for an entire school is not an easy one. Well-balanced meals help students do their best work. Proper credit must be given to our cooks, Mrs. Mildred Miller, Mrs. Ethel Wulbur, Mrs. Esther Strausbaugh, Mrs. Mary Hecht, and Mrs. Betty DeMange who spend much time planning and preparing our daily school lunches. Likewise, the task of being a school custodian is not an easy one. The word custodian literally means, “guardian” or “keeper” and our custodians are indeed the keepers of our school. The atmosphere of a school contributes much to the output of its students and our custodians, Mr. Joe Varner and Mr. Webb NlcEldowney, certainly provide us with a clean and efficient one in which to work. Have vou ever wondered what it would be like to walk 10 or 15 miles to school in all kinds of weather? Without our bus drivers, this statement could become a reality for our rural students. We certainly owe a debt of gratitude to our bus drivers who give up their time and energy in the best interests of Versailles students. 17 Language Arts “Sick Wit” strikes again! MR. The Versailles football team had a very successful season this year. Due to some key injuries, they had a somewhat slow start. Most other teams would have given up and thrown in the sponge—but not our Tigers. They picked up the pieces, worked that much harder, and turned out some unbelievable victories such as Marion and Parkway. With all their courage and fortitude, the team turned what could have been a long season into a Tri-County League Championship. The reason for the rough time came from the fact that very few came out. This, however, did not hinder the team. They worked very hard to make up for their few members.
