THE SENIOR CLASC PRESENTS THE PORTAL 1967 VOLUME 42 CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY........... 5 STUDENT BODY............29 ACTIVITIES..............81 ADVERTISEMENTS....... I 17 For many years. Mr. Rhoades has been a familiar figure in the halls of VHS. In 1929, he joined the Versailles faculty as a teacher of physics, math and chemistry. He became principal of the high school in 1930 and served in this position until 1966. This year he acts as the Federal Programs Supervisor and Coordinator for the Versailles Exempted Village School District. The Seniors of 1967 wish to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Rhoades for his years of service. In sincere gratitude we dedicate our yearbook to him. 3 Dear Seniors: The school year just concluded has been one of the most rewarding yet frustrating I have ever experienced. In your scholastic endeavors, you have excelled; in your athletic endeavors you have been outstanding; as school citizens this class had indeed set a standard of excellence for future classes. However, we have together experienced frustration because plans had to be altered, your education had to be interrupted and an uneasy situation prevailed in our community. Please accept my commendation for the maturity exhibited by your class. In closing, please let me suggest the following as worthwhile objectives for each of you. Be as happy as possible with the work you choose to do; continue to read and study throughout your lifetime; have some kind of hobby and travel as extensively as possible but travel with purpose. 6 Please accept my congratulations and personal best wishes for a satisfying and happy life. GLENN ZELLER, B.S. Ohio Northern University Elementary Principal For you, the class of 1967, many problems are waiting to be solved. To those who are interested in solving these problems a life of service and pleasure is in store. It requires trained and hard working people to accomplish this task. It is my hope that the training you received in the Versailles’ Schools has made it possible for each of you to take your place in the solving of the problems of the society of tomorrow. Glenn Zeller CARL ADAMS B.S. Manchester M.A. Bail State High School Principal Dear Class of 67, In a time that sees 4,000 jobs a day eliminated, a time that sees each working adult need to be retrained three times vocationally in a life time, a time that sees a terrific shortage in some fields of work, but at the same time continued unemployment because of improper skills, we officially open the door to adult life. You are entering a land from which there is no return, nor should there be. You have enjoyed high school life but the joys of occupational achievement, marriage, service, etc. are on the horizon. This is only the beginning. The more difficult the goal, the fewer trying, but the greater the return. May your desires be high as the heavens, your fortitude be as enduring as the Redwoods, the example you set be divine, and your contribution to humanity surpass Lincoln. Kiiapke. Pres.; S. Schellhase, V. Pres. SEATED: J. Borchers, Treasurer; L. Loxley, Secretary 78 The annual staff held a contest in the fall of 1966 to find a name for the annual. The contest ran for a week with the annual staff officers as judges. Along with the officers, three teachers were asked to make a final decision on the name selected by the staff. The contest was a great success, due to the cooperation and enthusiasm of the student body. The student who submitted the winning entry was Susan Adams, a senior. Sue's reason for the title, THE PORTAL , was, The annual is like a door which, when opened, reveals the events of the past year. The staff also believes that the school resembles a portal. It is the doorway to life. During the twelve years that are spent in school, a student is subject to many tasks. Not only does he have to cope with the problems of his studies, but he also has to learn to live with people in his realm. These things are important for a student to succeed in later life. The staff wishes to thank Mr. Adams for his cooperation in the contest, Mrs. New-lin. Miss Delong and Mrs. Kerlin for their assistance in selecting the name, and above all, the student body for their participation in the contest. ACTIVITIES STANDING: T. Weaver, S. Schmitt, S. This idea is very well stated in the theme To further interests in Home Economics. F. H. A. provides many activities which help prepare a girl for the future. The main event, which is the annual Style Show, is presented in the spring and gives the girls a chance to display their handiwork. The well-balanced program of F. H. A. includes many facets auch as work, charity and enjoyment. The Paper Drive and the Bake Sale prove to be quite a lot of work. On the other hand, much benevolence is displayed when the F. H, A. holds the Christmas party called the Hen and Tots Party to which each girl takes a little child. The birthday party at the Old Folk's Home is also a very heartwarming and charitable experience for the girls. But there is always time for fun. The freshman initiation is usually very much fun as well as hectic. The F. H. A. also sponsors several school dances throughout the year. 84 FHA OFFICERS Pres. P. Stammen Vice Pres. M. Treon Sec. C. Every year the club takes in new members. They each must pledge” themselves to the club. The club is open to the girls in high school only. In order to become a full-fledged member, each pledge must earn a certain number of points by the end of the year. These points are earned by working on projects and attending meeting. The Freshman Pledges cannot attend the meetings or vote, but they have their own leader who informs them of the activities. First of all, this year the G. A. A. started the idea of having dances at school after the football and basketball games. The second project was the Homecoming Float. The G. A. A. members and pledges decorated the float for the queen, her attendants and court to the theme of The Tigers are Coming. Also, each year the G. A. A. has a volleyball, basketball, track and softball team. In each of these there is a varsity squad and a reserve squad, so everyone who goes out for a sport gets to play. This year the club also started a golf team. It met after school and on weekends for practices. It also went to miniature golf courses to practice on putting techniques. However no games were scheduled or played. The G. A. A. has many more new and exciting ideas which are to be used throughout the year. 86 GAA MEMBERS ROW 1. P. Glick, B. Parin, M. Simons, L. The stage was set to display the gloomy atmosphere of an old mansion in Maryland where a murdered body. Bill Leach, had been hidden. Judi McGlinch, one of the leading characters, played a sly, mentally unbalanced Theresa Drake, who together with her sister, Loretta Page, played by Leah Loxley, managed to scream the audience into a terrified frenzy. Jon Turpen played the leading role as a bad-acting lawyer, George Mollison, who tried through force and finesse to get someone to confess to the murder. Joanne Voisard and Peg Barga played two young, naive girls who accidentally become parties to the murderous plot by renting a room in the old mansion. Jack Elson portrayed a special agent from the government. Bill Henderson, who came to solve a mystery and ended up tied to a chair. The haughty Hannah Cloud played by Lynn Goubeaux came to aid George Mollison in finishing off' all the undesirable characters. Mike Batty, Tom Bohman, Linda Bulcher, Joe Coffield, Mike Knapke, Dave Mc-Clanahan, Dave McClurg, Nancy Shirer, Tim Weaver, Joan Bulcher and Karen Bulcher all played important parts in making this play the enormous success that it was. 90 SEATED: B. Soon the ghost appeared and, true to her title, danced. Old Zeb hid as some tourists entered and began to look over the old theater. Sis and Bill arrived to inform the group that the building was to be blown up in the morning. The experiences of the individuals locked in the doomed theatre created a delightful play. Connie Hecht and Jack Elson were the guest panelists chosen by Mr. Lantz. The regular panelists were Lynn Frey, Tim Keating, Bob Haun, and Sarah Vontress, moderator. To prepare for the Forum, Connie and Jack observed the Forum at Germantown and attended a practice session with the panel at the University of Dayton. The topic of the Forum was Crime and Delinquency. The first part of the program consisted of the panel discussion. The main idea that the panel evolved was that delinquency is caused by parental neglect of children. The second part of the program was the audience participation. The student body participated very well. There was not enough time to answer all the questions. The school enjoyed the Youth Forum and looks forward to having it back next year. LIBRARIANS: Peg Reck. It was a great night for football, and the Versailles team certainly knew this, for they bombarded Bradford 94-0! Before the game the usual Homecoming festivities took place. The candidates for queen were driven around the field in the cars so everyone could catch a glimpse of them. The attendants from each class rode on the float. Then, each in turn, the five candidates for queen stepped up onto the float; and the 1966 Homecoming Queen was announced - Miss Peg Barga. The float was then driven off the field, and the game was started. After the game, the FHA sponsored the Homecoming Dance with The Gents . About halfway through the dance, all of the representatives, attendants, their escorts, and the queen were introduced. After all had assembled on the stage. Bill Schuette, last year's king crowned the 1966 king - Mr. Tony Baltes. Queen Peg and King Tony reigned over the rest of the dance - until another exciting Homecoming came to an end. 98 HOMECOMING QUEEN PEG BARGA 99 ROW 1 J. Todd. C. Weaver, L. Brandt. C. Gaier, N. SENIOR OUTLOOK The opportunities for learning in high school include the familiar classes and courses but also extend much farther. As seniors, we look back and recognize the various phases of high school which have influenced and developed our thinking and behavior. Our teachers perhaps have had the strongest effect on us. In them we have met understanding, discipline and sometimes disagreement as they tried to make us think for ourselves. At times their help was not accepted by us but rather was effected in spite of our stubbornness. Working with many students, in and out of the classroom, we have learned the importance and the frequent difficulty of cooperating with others. We have come to recognize the fact that we must work for the things we want and that success does not always come with the first try. High school has held many new experiences for us. Our academic courses were at times frustrating but generally rewarding in the end. The sports were exciting, the music, pleasurable. The various clubs helped to satisfy our individual interests in many fields of training such as languages, farming and athletics. As graduates of 1967, it is our belief that our high school years have given us a start toward knowledge, maturity and wisdom. It is our hope that we may continue to grow and may contribute favorably to the world around us. 160
