STUDENT SENATE Each year one boy and one girl from the upper six grades are elected as Student Senate. This is the twenty-first consecutive year of having a Senate. At our first meeting the following officers were elected: President David Armstrong Vice President Jim Brandt Secretary-Treasurer Shirley Apple We sponsor assembly programs, sell Christmas seals, and sell candy every day at noon. The money we make from selling candy is going for pictures for the school. Doris Rindler and Bernard Phlipot ’57 THE HOMECOMING OF 1956 On the night of November 2, 1956, the Versailles Tigers met Minster in a hard-fought football game in which Versailles was victorious. Before the game the class attendants, Peg Barga, freshman; Helen Baltes, sophomore; Betty Dapore, junior; and Doris Rindler, senior, rode in convertibles preceding the float. On the float were the five girls chosen by the senior class as their choice for queen. Unknown to all until her name was announced over the microphone, Miss Carolyn Smith was chosen Homecoming Queen of 1956 and was crowned by the former queen, Miss Miriam Ashman. Carolyn’s court included Carol Crooks, Virginia Frantz, Lucille McClure, and Brenda Trittschuh. After the game a dance was held at the high school gym in honor of the new queen. LATIN CLUB On June 24 to 26 the National Convention of the Junior Classical League was held at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Two freshmen, Angela Ehrenfried and Arlene Brown attended this convention. They had an informative and enjoyable time. In September the 39 members of this year’s Junior Classical League met at Ward Park for its first gathering which was a -picnic. In October the sophomores entertained the freshmen at a Halloween Party. Prizes were given for the best dressed masqueraders. November marked formal initiation of the freshmen into the Junior Classical League. This was an impressive candle light ceremony. When the initiation was over the sophomores entertained the freshmen with a play about Roman school boys having to learn English. Refreshments were served later. On December 19 the Junior Classical League had a Saturnalia party at Mrs. Hensel’s home. The members had to perform charades to get their gifts from under the Saturnialia tree. Christmas carols were sung in Latin. All in all the Junior Classical League members are having an enjoyable year. F. F. A First row: Mr. Lconhart. Organization is the social part of the Vocational Agriculture Program. Each student who elects Vocational Agriculture can join the F. F. A. Organization. There are 39 members in the Versailles Chapter of Future Farmers of America. The Parliamentary Procedure team went to New Madison last December and won a gold rating. The Versailles Chapter promotes annually a Father and Son Livestock Judging Contest, also a beef barbecue, and chapter pest war contest. Each summer some boys from the Versailles Chapter go to F. F. A. camp. This camp is located on Leesville Lake, which is about 250 miles northeast of Versailles. The boys all enjoy themselves in sports as well as educational activities. The F. F. A. and F. H. A. has five square dances a year. They are enjoyed by both organizations and we hope to continue them in the future. The officers of the Versailles Chapter are as follows: President, Carl Gigandet; Vice President, Robert Epperly; Secretary, Orville Bohman; Treasurer, Allen Brandt; Reporter, Dale Hart; Sentinel, Jim Kremer. —10— F. Carol Niederkorn Carol Crooks Yvonne Monnin —32— CLASS PROPHECY On the evening of May 20, 1977, Mr. Rhoades, the former principal of Versailles High School, is sitting in his rocking chair, quietly reminiscing of his past years at V. H. S. His thoughts must naturally turn to the successful class of ’57. He first thinks of Arthur May, the president of the class, who has just been proclaimed the best photographer in the universe because of his photograph of Ginny Frantz. She is the highest paid model in the United States, modeling the sophisticated evening wear created by the world-recognized designer, Earlene Dapore. In high school Earlene was never seen without Anna Didier, who now operates the Rock of Ages Rest Home. Yvonne Monnin is the head of the dietetic department. All the supplies are bought at Marion’s Marvelous Market, operated by Marion Hannon. As his thoughts wander on to each member of the class he thinks of Lucille McClure and Doris Gerling, who have been at the head of Miami Valley and St. Elizabeth’s Hospitals for ten years and are now uniting to form the McClure-Gerling Institute for the rich homeless. Some of their good friends, Myrna McClurg and Carolyn Smith, were on the flight X25Z123 to the moon, working as stewardesses, when John Armstrong the pilot failed to negotiate Mars and crashed. Luckily Brenda Trittschuh, Registered Nurse, was stationed there and saved the lives of all. They told Brenda that Mrs. Kruckeberg, formerly Doris Berger, is very proud of her husband, Larry, who now owns a chain of self-service Sohio gas stations for helicopters, the main branch located in Webster, Ohio. Ernie Monnin, between running to Piqua and talking to Mrs. Ashman in the office (Oh yes! He’s still here!) didn’t have time to find a job. Mr. Rhoades then recollected Denny Subler, who now owns the largest Ford Garage in Versailles. He has just hired Carol Crooks as the “First Woman Grease Monkey”. George Gigandet is head workman and with the help of his wife, the former Evelyn Yagle, is raising little mechanics. As he began to recall more and more of his students, he thought of Darlene Coons, now the telephone operator in North Star, who knows all, sees all, and tells all. She overheard that Mademoiselle Fritz had run the Golden Horse Shoe, operated by Harold Keiser and Jack Rindler, and the Red Garter, operated by Walter Dorsten and Melvin Schlater, out of business by the opening of her own casino, the Ritzy Fritzy Club. Her head chefs are Wanda Kueterman and Harriet Wulber. —33— CLASS PROPHECY (Cont'd.) Eddie Bulcher due to the strain of spending his millions is now lounging on the Riviera. Another one of the classmates, Louis Grilliot is making millions on his new type of tasteless, colorless tomatoes. He has hired Ralph Goubeaux and Phil Dickman to haul them to market on the fastest truck ever invented, which is a cross between a Ford and a Dodge. Bob Marshal is still trying to produce eggs as large as basketballs and is assisted by the Poultry Producers’ pride and joy, Joe Pierron. Gary Poling has been hired as chemistry teacher. Some of his students, Jean Hiatt, Jerome Hartzell and Denny Neargardner are trying to invent an odorless rotten egg gas. Down the hall Eddie Barga was hired as history teacher to take over Mr. Fields’ position. Carol Niederkorn is now matron of Three Trees Penitentiary for Women. Jim Hart, who gained experience under Mr. Rhoades, a real chemist!, is working as head cook. All the inmates thoroughly enjoy his synthetic foods. Willard Gehron designed the building so it is impossible to escape in any way. Some more of his former students called The Terrible Trio Plus One, consisting of Virginia Kramer, Pat Subler, Evelyn Voisinet, and Doris Sherman have just purchased Eldora Park. The place is very peaceful since Leonard Rethman was hired as the toughest dance hall cop in Ohio. Arlene Poeppelman has just won the Ladies Powder Puff Race at the Eldora Speedway. She was driving a new version of an old car that was built by the expert mechanic, Paul Nieport. Incidentally, speaking of races, Dick Lauber has just won the Indianapolis 500. Yes, he was still driving his “Hot Chevy’’ of his high school days, but upon investigation, it was discovered that he was disqualified because his brother-in-law, Virgil Frantz, was the timekeeper. No one seems to know what Joyce Strome and Karen Seman are doing but they both ride in armored cars and have a body guard consisting of the nation’s number one boxing and wrestling couple, Doris Rindler and Bernie Phlipot. Jerry Kerns, the highest paid sports writer in the world, is now writing the life of the greatest all-around coach, Clete Baltes. Since Mr. Rhoades had remembered all the members of the class, he hopes he had something to do with their prosperity and happiness. P. S. D. Hensel, Superintendent SCHOOL SPIRIT Every human being, if he wants to feel worthwhile, has to feel that he is wanted by the groups he’s in; that he has a part to play; that he is accepted. That’s what school spirit is—a feeling of belonging to the school, and of sharing in it. The best way to achieve this feeling of belonging is to take an active part in the group activity. The school’s first and main job is to educate students. So when you work hard at your school subjects, when you make the atmosphere friendly so that everybody learns the most, then you are showing school spirit. When you take part in the school’s clubs and activities you are showing school spirit. When you are helping yourself and others around you to develop new interests, to make friends, to learn how to get along with other people, you are showing school spirit. When you take your share of making the school run smoothly; when you help care for the school’s property; when you act like a real citizen of your school—then you are showing school spirit. When you show school spirit in some of these ways, you gradually develop a feeling of belonging to the school, and of sharing in its satisfactions. When you feel that you’re an important part of the school, then you feel proud of what your school accomplishes. You share in the benefits. It’s not a question of showing school spirit just for the sake of the school as if the school were something separate from you. It’s for the sake of what it means to both you and the school. Remember that you, and other students just like you, determine the kind of school we have. The better schools are always those in which there is a consciousness on the part of students that they share equal responsibility for establishing and maintaining good school practices and traditions. —57— Mr. L.
