lUe Senior ClaAA, Presents Ihe VenA-aiHeA. of 1952 VERSAILLES, OHIO VOLUME 27 MR. CLINE DEDICATION As a result of the fine sportsmanship portrayed by Mr. Cline’s squad and the student body and the spectators we have won not only the Stillwater Valley League Trophy but also the Stillwater Valley League Sportsmanship Trophy. Therefore, we the staff of the “Versailles 1952” dedicate this issue to Sportsmanship. R. URQUHART COACH CLARENCE CLINE J. BRANDT D. GEHLE J. SCHWEPE J. MILLS —3— TROPHIES! Bob Urquhart, Stillwater Valley League; John Schwepe, Exempted Village and Parochial; Delaine Gehle, District Runner-up; John Brandt, Stillwater Valley Sportsmanship; John Mills, Ansonia Invitational; Mr. Cline. LETTER MEN First Row: Eddie Keihl, Duane Berger, Jerry Oliver, Dick Kueterman, Bob Ehlers, Donald Baker; Second row: Bob Urquhart, John Schwepe, Delaine Gehle, John Brandt, John Mills, Mr. Cline. —A— TROPHIES! Trophies! Trophies! Trophies! Trophies! Trophies! That’s right, five of them all in one school year! But they weren’t easy to acquire! Coach Clarence Cline has built up this splendid team from eighth graders. Of course the boys are to be commended on their wonderful record of twenty wins and two losses. They have been apt pupils of the popular hardwood court sport, as well as outstanding advocates of good sportsmanship. Coach Cline started the season with Ansonia, and a win! However, the local squad was to taste its only defeat during regular play with the second game at Minster! St. John, Bradford, Greenville, followed in winning succession for the fighting quintet of John Brandt, Bob Urqu-hart, Delaine Gehle, John Mills and John Schwepe. They were capably assisted by Dick Kueterman, Duane Berger, Jerry Oliver, James Deagle, Bob Ehlers, Eddie McEldowney, Ramon Nickol, Carl Bauer, Bob Brown, Jack Bilger, Eddie Collins, and Vernon McEldowney. Came the holidays, and the Ansonia Invitational Tournament! Union City and Jackson fell to the growing list of Versailles victories. Also fell the handsome Tournament Trophy, the first to be won by the local contenders. This Trophy must be won three years before permanent possession may be claimed. Second semester, and the second Stillwater Valley League game. Newton, this time, with both the preliminary and the varsity games real thrillers! The Tigers won both games by one point! Jackson, Piqua Catholic and Covington next on the docket, and all Tiger wins. January 22nd brought the famed St. Henry quintet to our gym floor. Standing-room only, and not much of that. The Tigers gave the vaunted Redskins their first defeat of the season in a marvelous display of close teamwork and fast thinking basketball. The resounding win over St. Henry spurred the Versailles boys on to victories over Newton, Bradford and Covington—all League games—and gave them undisputed possession of the coveted Stillwater Valley League Trophy as the regular season came to a close. The Non-County Tournament lighted up the sports scene for the Tigers after the close of regular play. Piqua Catholic, Covington and Bradford again fell to the Tiger onslaught. Six-foot four-inch Delaine Gehle scored the remarkable total of thirty points against the Bradford Railroaders. The third trophy, that of the Pai'ochial and Exempted Village Tournament—Non-County—became the proud, and again undisputed, possession of the Versailles Tigers. Also the right to enter the Springfield District Class B competition at Wittenberg field house. The average points scored for the tournament were: Versailles, 65 1 3; Opponents, 40.2 On Monday, March 3rd, the annual Stillwater Valley League Banquet was held in the Versailles High School gymnasium. This honor always falls to the winners of the League, and we were only too glad to be the hosts! The Future Homemakers prepared the, food and saw to it that the decorations and entertainment were appropriate to the occasion. Miami University’s Track Coach, George Rider, was the principal speaker, and gave an interesting and enlightening interpretation of sportsmanship as being “character”. Bob Ungericht, Sports Writer for the Troy Daily News presented the Sportsmanship Trophy to our Versailles High School for their outstanding display of sportsmanship— “character”—as judged by the members of the Stillwater Valley League Association. Perhaps a word concerning this trophy would be advisable. The points considered are: attitude of general attendance of fans, courtesy of cheer-leaders in sharing court with visiting cheer-leaders, and the sportsmanship of the team members. Booing or cat-calling the opposition or officials is unsportsmanlike conduct. Versailles fans are to be (Continued on page 79) —5— First row: Keihl, manager, McClellan, Nickol, Apple, Collins, E. While passing through Ansonia we saw Mrs. Jane Miller Steed trying to get all of her eleven children into the car so they could get to the fair early enough to get a good seat in the grandstand. Continuing on we stopped by a truck with a flat tire and were surprised to find it was Bob Plessinger still single and trying to get home in time to get dressed for his big date. After helping him we drove on into Brock territory and who do you suppose the first people we saw were? Nancy and John Brandt out taking care of their prize hogs. We discovered that they wouldn’t be able to attend the fair that evening because they were having company from upstate, Mrs. Vada Fisher and her husband, and since they had eight children between the two families all agreed that it would be too nerve racking to go to the fair that night. Dick Frantz lived next door to the Brandt’s but we were disappointed in finding that he had gone to Europe for the week-end taking his secretary, Nina Tegtmeyer, with him. Traveling on towards North Star we were distracted by a car making a lot of noise to pass us and when it finally succeeded we found that it was our old classmate, Barbara Rindler, now owner of the Rindler Moeller grocery. She was rushing home to get supper but when she recognized us she stopped for a very few minutes and told us some of the news from her vicinity. It seems that John Stuck has been called to Washington to help the government officials on some new scientific experiments. Pat Pepiot has moved to North Star and now is managing a large Thrift E market all by herself while Delores Coons is the head clerk and Ina Dunwoody is the advertising manager. All three are happily married but prefer to follow the popular style of career women by sticking to their maiden names. Delores Didier has now become the head nurse at Monarch in the city of Sidney while Virginia Ford-Selan-der has just been elected the first woman mayor of North Star. As we sat watching Barbara speed home we decided that it would be useless to continue on to North Star as we already knew the news and would undoubtedly see some of these people at Versailles. Thus retracing a few miles we found ourselves in the thriving metropolis of French-town. As it was not 3:30 p. m. we were suddenly surprised to see all the pupils from the large, new, and quite modern Frenchtown school come racing down the steps of the school house, followed by Paul Shimp, their principal, rushing toward the subway station to take the 3:00 o’clock train to Versailles. While watching the few lower grade pupils that did not take the train we saw two little girls that resembled Bernice Hemmel-garn and Esther Kramer very closely. Following them to the cars they entered we had a pleasant chat with the two mothers who were in no hurry at all because they had to wait for their husbands to do the evening chores before they could start out to see the County Fair’s sights. Before too long we headed north toward Yorkshire and long before we entered it a large sign was visible—“Kremer’s Feeds, Yorkshire and McCartyville”. Entering the city limits we saw a little boy, who later turned out to be John Barge, building a very complicated bridge over the gutter of Main Street. He said that he wanted to be a big engineer like his daddy and build bridges across the Grand Canyon. After the boy had directed us to Kremer’s Feed Store and Elevator we were overjoyed to find that Howard, our classmate, was the sole owner and operator. As he took us on a personal tour through the buildings we saw that (Continued on page 77) —24— CAN YOU IMAGINE? John Barge without a good excuse? Tom Baughman without a book? Last fall sixty-two Juniors entered V. H. S. Soon after school opened, we ordered our class rings. We received them before Christmas. We like them very much. On November 16, we presented our class play, “Let’s Make Believe”. We hope the audience enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed giving it. We are very grateful to our directors, Miss Eastman and Miss Craig. We were glad to have Janet Berger as our attendant to the 1951 Homecoming Queen. The class of ’53 is well represented in all school activities. We are very proud of our athletes. During the year we have been raising money in various ways, so that we will be able to finance the Junior-Senior Prom. Besides producing our class play, we have sold pencils, pennants, Christmas cards, and programs for football and basketball games. The last event of the year was the Prom. This was held in May, and was a great success. We wish to thank Mrs. Young. As our class advisor, she has given us much of her time, and has helped us with all our projects. We appreciate this very much. We hope that everyone will be back next year, so that we can all be together for our last year high school. —Jane Evinger ’53. —37— SOPHOMORE CLASS First row: Delores DeMange, Dorothy Lankenkamp, Pat Oehrtman, Kenneth Dowty, Eddie Collins; Second row: Anna Allread, Mary Angela Paulus, Joy Streib, Virginia Meyers, Betty Gehle; Third row: Nancy Zeller, Barbara Foster, Jacqueline Pitsenbarger, Eileen Dorsten, Ethyl Sampson; Fourth row: Elsie Hammaker, Maryanna Young, Carol Bergman, Norma Keiser, Ed Keihl, Fifth row: Leona Gasson, Jeanette Heckman, Ruth Poeppelman, Vernon Wright, Tony Grilliot; Sixth row: Joan Reth-man, Eileen Rethman, Carl Bauer, Edna Kelch, Victor Rosenbeck. The night all of us have been waiting for for twelve years, but now that it has come we wish for our school days over again. We will always keep some memories of all we experienced in good old V. H. S. Vada D. Scherer ’52. SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Phyllis Shoffner and Joan Winner were typists and that Thelma Speel-man was his own personal secretary. We were in the Feeds section when we came face to face with Gene Strome who was purchasing the following year’s feed for the million dollar chicken farm that he and Evelyn Pohl had become partners to form. Gene was happily married but Evelyn had turned down all others and was still waiting for her boy friend io come back from the service. After talking longer than we should have we promised to meet them all later and proceeded towards Willowdell, the next to last stop before Versailles. Once there we could find no one we knew until we saw a acor open and out walked Jim Monnier, Mayor. He said he was going to a meeting of the town’s ladies and asked us if we would care to come along. We accepted and once inside were glad that we had for we saw Marian Hilgefort and Marianne Langenkamp who had married twin brothers and were living in the same house, and Marjorie Grisez, famed operator of a beauty salon there. Tiptoeing out in the middle of the meeting we rushed to Russia where we knew that we could only hope to stay for a short time if we were to make Versailles in time. We stopped first at the home of Shirley Clark Watren, but didn’t stay long because her three red-headed youngsters were all wanting attention at once. However, before we left she told us that Barbara Millet had joined the WAFS to be near Stanley. Going uptown we saw a Paulus’ Furniture Store that turned out to be operated by Dick Paulus as a branch office from the Versailles Store. As we stood talking to him in walked Jeanette McEldowney and Lurene Simon with their fiances looking for furniture for their new homes. Then when the clerk came out we saw that it was Alice Berger who was married and had just returned after her supper hour. We could only remain and talk a few minutes more and finally we set out on the last lap of our journey. Just before reaching the city limits we stopped at the mailbox with the name Moody on it to see June Matthieu’s two sets of twins. Of course the first place we had to go in town was our old hangout the Sweet Shop where Edith Wright proudly told us that she had just bought out Brown and that now she was going to get married and make a partnership with the owner of the boy’s hangout across the street. We ate a little supper there and while looking through the Versailles Policy we discovered that Charles Parmenter was now Editor-in-chief. In some of the advertisements in the paper we saw that Jane Pequignot was to star that night in a roller-skating show at the fair and that James Paulus was signing autographs to go with his new records that had just come out. Edith told us that Mr. Rhoades had finally given up and that Evan Leichty had taken his place as Physics teacher, while Margie Drees had stepped in for Mrs. Young, who had retired to write her own etiquette book. It was completely dark when we left the Sweet Shop and we hopped out in the middle of the fast moving four lane traffic of Main Street to talk with Bob Kruckeberg who was directing the traffic. He could not talk for more than a minute so we followed his directions to the police station to see Joyce Swallow the newly appinted chief-of-police. He was talking earnestly to Bob Urquhart when we entered but they both greeted us and immediately told us the latest news, Tom Baughman had just become the Secretary of Defense through his N. R. O. T. C. training. Delaine Gehle had just been picked for the All American basketball team, and Duane “Sac” Berger had been offered a job by the Cincinnati Reds. Joyce had to leave suddenly so Bob told us a few things about himself. (Continued on page 78) —77— SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY His dream had come true and he had made enough money at the garage to retire at twenty-one, selling out to Jim Bigham who was now happily married and getting along just fine. The noise of the Fair finally got too loud to hear any conversation so we started walking again turning in at the largest ten cent store in the United States, owned by Josie Marchal. She took us to see Pauline Mangen, her head clerk and to Mary Finfrock’s private office for the commercial designing and advertising of which she was the head. Josie had to leave us here and Mary told us that Wanda had married Roy and that they were now selling fishworms in Michigan as they had planned. By this time it was getting late and we had ridden all the rides and seen all the sights so we were heading for home when a bright red convertible pulled up beside us and honked the horn. It was Earl Hols-apple and he told us of his promotion to head of the Poultry Producers’ Associaion. He was in a hurry but we were glad that we had seen him— because now we had accounted for everyone of the class of ’52. Mission accomplished, it’s time to go home; Goodnight ! ! ! ! —Gail Pitsenbarger and Nancy Trittschuh. —78— TROPHIES! commended upon their splendid contribution to the necessary compliance to the rules and regulations governing the awarding of this trophy. This is a definite compliment to the good attiude and sporsmanship of the community. And now on to Springfield, and the Southwestern District Class B competition. Our winning streak prevailed, and we were able to defeat the Darke County League Champions—Hollansburg—in our first game at Wittenberg Field House. With one victory under our belts, the Tigers shook off the threat of second game competition in the form of Chris-tiansburg-Jackson, the runners-up winners in Champaign County Tournament play, by a seventeen point win. Powerful Northwestern gave us a close game, but the local varsity came through with a two-point win in the semi-finals. Saturday night, and the “hot-time” was in the Wittenberg Field House as the District Finals loomed with the opposition being the dark horse Urbana-Local squad. This game will go down as being the most tremendous heart-breaker in the annals of all Versailles Basketball competition. So near, and yet not near enough. A nip and tuck battle all the way, each team refusing to bow to the other. One minute and forty seconds left to play. Could he valiant Tigers hold the equally courageous Lions to the 50-49 lead? Time was running out. Ten seconds, nine seconds, eight second, SEVEN SECONDS! The referee’s whistle sounded. A foul on a Tiger! Urbana, one shot! With pressure so terriffic could the opposition make it? He did! The game went into overtime. The Lions scored twice, the Tigers once, and the overtime ran out. The valiant Tigers went down for the second time in twenty-two starts. The new District Champions, Urbana-Local; runners-up, Versailles Exempted Village High School. A terrific game, but lost to a very deserving and fine performing team of good sports and spirited basketball players. However, the fifth trophy emerged from Springfield as the Runner-ups in the Springfield District Class B tournament. —79— CLASS WILL BARBARA MILLET: Bequeaths her natural blonde haid to Ruth Guil- lozet.
