NORMA BALLINGER JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY On September eighth, Nineteen Thirty-one, a group of forty-seven Freshmen launched their ships for what they hoped would be a success- ful voyage through V. H. S. Like-all Freshmen, we were green , but after becoming accustomed to the strange surroundings and the taunts of the upper classmen, we progressed rapidly in studies and activities. Officers for the year were: President, James Pequignot, Vice-Presi- dent, Lenore Webster, Secretary, Fairy Wasson, Treasurer, Bonnie Hu- ber. The most outstanding event was the victory of the Freshmen over the Sophomores in the inter-class tournament. In the fall of Nineteen Thirty-two, we started on the second lap of our voyage, determined to participate in social life and activities, and to obtaina High School education. We selected the following officers: President, Nolan Young, Vice-President, Lenore Webster, Secretary and Treasurer, Fairy Wasson. A Modern History Club was organized and a banquet was held in the High School Cafeteria. We closed the year with a class picnic, held at Greenville Park. The third lap of the voyage began in September, Nineteen Thirty- three, with a crew of forty-one. The oiiicers elected were as follows: President, Harriette Vankey, Vice-President, Lowell Byrd, Secretary, Elaine Long, Treasurer, Lenore Webster, Class Reporter, Norma Bal- linger. Although many problems still face us, we hope that the rest of our voyage through High School to graduation will be successful. -Norma Ballinger, '35.

LUCIA CON KLING SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY One Way to succeed is to set a high standard and to conform to that standard at all costs. This is the idea of the Sophomore Class of 1933- 34. This class started out with the worthy ambition of being the best class ever to graduate from V. H. S. Although two more years must elapse before the final outcome is known, the class has to its credit, ac- complishments enough to justify the belief that their goal will be reach- ed. One requirement of the best class is scholarship which presupposes the ability to think and study with a purpose. It is a worthy student who has achieved this ability by the time he has reached his Sophomore year. That the class of 1933-4 has acquired this technique is proved, by their scholastic record, which has been made possible by the achieve- ments of Steven Grillot and Carl Jones, together wtih the full co-oper- ation of the entire class. Our class is well represented in the Glee Clubs, Band, and Orches- tra. We have quite a few talented pupils and wish to bring them to light in the future. We Sophomores are taking part in practically all school activities, especially athletics. The Football Team was well represented by many of the robust boys, while Basketball beckoned only a few. Meanwhile the girls of the class hold the majority on the Girls' Team. The class sponsored a Christmas party for the entire Junior and Senior High Schoos, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. We even went so far as to have a Santa Claus. fThanks to Raymond Fisherj Last, but not least, the class has learned to be friendly and optim- istic. The class knows that the way to have friends is to be one. It has also discovered that optimism is a habit and that cheerfulness pays. All people, not excepting High School students, have their trials. But things generally turn out well if one only believes they will. Therefore it is well to be optimistic. . Watch the studious, athletic, sociable, friendly, and optimistic Sophomore Class of 1933-34. ., -Lucia Conkling, '36.
