THE (HIRfiOR Published by the STUDENTS OF VERSAILLES HIGH SCHOOL Versailles, Missouri Picture courtesy of Massie--Missouri Resources Div. do reword With the passing of time, the memories of our school life will grow fainter and fainter, and then die away. Gone forever will be the routine of school life, the fun we had, and the friends we made. As the placid waters of the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks reflect the splendor of the surrounding country, we, the Annual Staff of 1953, hope that The Mirror will reflect the memories of this school year to you, so that the memories may linger forever. To you, the advertisers, contributors, and sponsors of the 1952 Mirror , we dedicate this book as an expression of our sincere appreciation for your interest, cooperation, and assistance. In the years to come we shall highly value the memories of our high school life, and we want to thank you for making these memories possible, through the Mirror ; therefore we dedicate this edition of our yearbook, to the businessmen of the communities served by our schools. t)edi ication Picture courtesy of Massie--Missouri Resources Div. These past four years at V.H.S. will remain in our memories forever. It seems rather sad, in a way, to think we won't be back next year to share in the good times. For some of us there will be college; but for the rest, these have been the last of our carefree school days. As we look back over the past four years, we think of the parties, basket- ball games, plays, homecomings, and all our other activities. All of them brought happy and disappointing times, exciting wins and sad losses. At times we may think our school years have consisted of a lot of hard work and study; but without this there could not have been any worth-while accomplishments made. As we prepare to leave V.H.S. in a few days, we leave behind the hope that the underclassmen will find their years here as interesting and enjoyable as ours have been. Early in September of 1949, one hundred six eager students enrolled as freshmen in V.H.S. This class, which was to become the Class of â53, had as its sponsors, Miss Lehman and Mrs. Waid. The next year our number had dropped to eighty, but we worked diligently to produce the entertainment for âPlantation Partyâ, the junior-senior banquet. It was a huge success, and we, the sophomores, were fortunate to have Mrs. Marriott and Miss Lehman as sponsors. Now we were upper classmen! We had earned money during our three years of high school life to entertain the seniors at a banquet. Our theme, âHitch Your Wagon to a Star,â was extremely beautiful. We had a starry sky, a moonlit garden,-------and a wonderful time. Finally we were seniors ! It doesnât seem possible that our high school life is about over. We have looked forward to the junior-senior banquet, baccalaureate, graduation, and many other last minute events. On graduation night, we, the seniors, will walk down to the stage to receive diplomas. Of this group not one will forget the class of â53; our sponsors, Miss Lehman and Mrs. Marriott; or the wonderful times we have had at V.H.S., our Alma Mater!!!! Freshman English class reads the story, The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden by Thornton Wilder. Under Miss Lehmanâs guidance one hundred seventy-five students study freshman English, citizenship, and American problems. The English students are interested not only in writing correctly but also in using correct English in speaking. It is for this reason that one will hear the warning, âSpeak more slowly,â as well as the statement, âTha: word is not spelled correctly,â in the class- room. The citizenship class is concerned with making certain that the citizens of the future will be able to successfully take their place in government. Students in American problems study the problems that have faced our government through the years. By doing this the class hopes to face tomorrowâs problems with the assurance that they can be solved. American problems class holds a mock election. Citizenship class reviews the world's latest happenings. Map study for freshmen. Congratulations, Seniors! HAPPY HOURS RESORT T The social studies department puts forth an effort to develop the historical background of some of the modern social problems, and to consider intensively the pupilâs place and responsibilities with reference to American democracy. The courses taught this year are Home Economics I, II, and III. Each year the class in the third year of home economics serves a banquet to the members of the school board and their wives. Each spring, as a finale to the sewing unit, a style show is presented to the school in an assembly. Senior students put their knowledge to a practical use. The science department of V.H.S. offers three courses---general science, biology, and advanced physical science---to a total of ninety-three students. In an attempt to under- stand this world of today, a study of principles and laws of science is made, with practical application to everyday living. Two laboratory periods per week give training in laboratory techniques, manipulation, and interpretation of results. Science is a basic course for those students who intend to make some phase of science a career. All students intending to go to college should take general science as a freshman and biology their sophomore or junior year. Be accurate, precise, and careful. MUSIC DEPARTMENT The past year has been a very busy one for Mr. Schmoli and his proteges iifter refusing to be blown away while spending the night at the State Fair, the band returned to school and began working in earnest. They were well represented at the band clinic and at the contests. Besides the band, grade school music, and private instruction Mr. Schmoli has found time for four chorus classes daily. The band, mixed chorus, and other music students were combined into an impressive Christmas program. From the large mixed chorus a group of Lily Pons and Ezio Pinzas were chosen to represent our school at the choral clinic. The contests have, as in the past, provided an incentive to better work in both instrumental and vocal departments. The various solos, quartettes, trios, etc. have kept the music students very busy. Congratulations from NAVAJO BEACH The bulletin-board display showing occupations and activities where knowledge of algebra is essential is being studied by gen- eral mathematic students. MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT The one hundred thirty students enrolled in the math, department work diligently under the guidance of Mrs. Marriott.
