CLASS FLOWER Red Rose CLASS COLOR Red and White CLASS SPONSORS Miss McDonald Mr. Schmoll Senior Class History Here we come! The freshmen of 1948-49- There were 49 of us. This was smaller than most classes that entered high school, but we felt just as big as the others. Mr. Schmoll and Mrs. Sutton were our faithful sponsors. Theyhelpedus to get accustomed to our new exciting high school life. Each class elected a king and queen--ours were Bob Hall and Joan Purdy. At the end of our freshman year, seventeen of our class members left us. As we started in as sophomores we only had 34 class members. This was an important year because we had to provide the entertainment for the Junior-Senior Banquet. The theme of the banquet was Blue Room. Our program consisted of musical numbers--we even had our own combo. The gym was decorated in blue and white. It certainly was a memorable event. The Hawthorne Literary Society chose Gloria Hart as our representative to the Sophomore Pilgrimage at Jefferson City. All the classes elected their queens and cur lucky gal was Norma Walker. As our junior year olled around, we realized that it would take a lot of dil- igent work to give the seniors a banquet not to be forgotten--and, we did! The gym was beautifully decorated in pastel colors, and spring flowers. The theme of the banquet was Southern Plantation Party . The sophomores presented a cute minstrel. This Junior-Senior Banquet was, in our estimation, one of the best ever given in our high school. Lynda Otten was selected by the American Legion Auxiliary to attend Girls' State at Fulton, and Bob Hall was selected to go to Boys' State at Columbia. Now, we are seniors, our class has dropped from 49 students to 29- We have finished 12 long years of school, but now they seem to have slipped by much too fast. It doesn't seem quite possible that it will be our class marching down the aisle to the familiar strains of Pomp and Circumstance , receiving our diplomas, and then stepping out into a new world of opportunity. There will be college for some, various jobs, armed service, etc. , but we know, no matter what future each chooses, that the memory of our dear friends we made and V. H. S. will be with us always. Now we bid you farewell, and all the luck in the world for a wonderful life of happiness and may you all learn to cherish all the memories of events at Dear Ole V. H. S. Sponsored by HART’S A. G. Miss Lehman teaches freshman and sophomore English, and Miss Cumming teaches junior English, English literature, and speech. Mrs. Roth instructs 200 freshmen, sophomores and juniors in the funda- mentals of history and civics, providing a vital background for active citizens of the future. Sophomores take a spelling test. Juniors working in their workbooks. Freshmen participating in conservation. Jimmy tells a humorous story in speech. Freshmen checking their test papers. Citizenship class studying the Junior Review. SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS Miss McDonald instructs two courses in the sciences General Science is taught to freshmen and Biology is taught to sophomores and juniors. At various times of the day you might see Biology students peering through microscopes at “wee beasties”, or General Science students performing experiments. Every day 150 mathematically inclined students pass through the doors into Room 15. Mrs! The Home Economics department with an enrollment of forty-four mem- bers is under the supervision of Mrs. Waid. This department gives the stu- dents a chance to develop such skills as sewing, cooking, and artistic work. Sewing and cooking fundamentals are offered to girls in Home Economics I and II. In Related Arts, the boys and girls make decorative articles such as etched trays and glasses, copper foil pictures, and other interesting house- hold objects. This year the Ag department develops the farming interest of forty- five boys in offering Agriculture I and II and III. With Mr. White as instructor, these boys work diligently learning the facts regarding livestock, crops, and other aspects of agriculture. Courtesy of WESTERN AUTO Laying out angles on a miter box. Bookkeep- ing, Typing I and II are taught to 64 students by Mr. Jobe. High on the list of extra-cur- ricular activities in V.H.S. is the music department. For those musically inclined are the band and the glee club. Mr. Schmoll, the sole instructor of this big department, finds himself quite busy with a 50 piece band, three daily chorus classes, a mixed chorus, and several other special groups. He also finds time to encourage would be musicians at the grade school each day. Making use of that typing practice period. Typing I class is hard at work. Typing II class takes a timed writing. Among the many activities the Chapter has participated in are contests such as Poultry Judging, Livestock Judging, Dairy Judging, Dairy Products teams, Farm Shop teams, Parliamentary Procedure teams, Radio Skits, and Public speaking; and trips to the American Royal, National Dairy Shows, National F.F.A. Conventions, State Conventions, State Livestock Sales and Shows. One of the outstanding events of each spring is the F.F.A. Banquet honoring the parents of the members. To carry on its busy schedule, the Chapter set itself a goal of raising $500 this year. Two successful projects--a box supper and a sale of magazine sub- scriptions--have been sponsored to help meet this goal. The Future Homemakers of America of Versailles High School is an organ- ization that merits and receives the respect of the entire school. The purpose of the organization is to provide efficient and gracious homemakers for the future, and the local club has shown evidence that it is doing just that. The Versailles F.H.A. recieved recognition this year as having one of the largest groups in the state, and in addition had the honor of having one of their members, Charlene Himrod, serve as Chairman of the Sub-District organization. Outstanding among their achievements this year was their Christmas project of adopting a Negro family. They also sponsored a concession stand at the Warsaw game, presented an assembly, and had an all-school party. S. this whole-hearted support is lead by the Pep Squad. The lively Pep Squad, conspicuous in their black sweaters with gold tiger heads, was a vital part of every basketball game this season. The four cheerleaders--Lynda Ann Otten, Sue Swartz, Mildred Stephens, and Darlene Coffman--dressed attractive- ly in black and gold, and working together smoothly in their well-organized cheering routines, made a group the school was proud to have represent them. The 45 members of the Pep Squad were sponsored by Coach Curl. Among their activities this year were entering a float in the Homecoming parade, sponsoring a stand at the Crocker game, and buying sweaters for uniforms.
