UN IOR CLASS Upper classmen at last! Like a dream c tr ' ome ue. Whether it be scholastically or athletically, our class really shone. September found our girls in the grandstands yelling for the brawny mem- bers of the class who braved the football and soccer fields and at the end of the season, John Kortright and Jackie Kingston were named co- captains of next year's football team, while Henry Palm was elected to head the soccer team. Start- ing oflf with a big ban g we elected Herby Light Jimmy Pignatello and R , ay DeCheser to lead the class through this very important year. Th e class' x contributio to student council wasv Vice-Presi- dent Joh lk ' i 4 n ortrightl and Secretary-Lois Axman while ArleneiGraf'f and Rob K xerta Hochheiser repre- sented vus as co-managing editors of the White Hornet. One of our most memorable experiences was the pres- ehtations at the radio I X p ay' Between Americans for Madison High School 'diana- Theflunior Prom climaxed the end of a won- derful year. The hard working decorating com- mittee transformed th Y e gym into a Hawaiian Is- land and the dance proved to be-a great success. 'L Page 37 THE SOPHO CRE On the seventh of September in '49 We left glad memories of vacations behind, We cautiously opened the high school doors And gazed with awe at the newly waxed floors, As the day drew nearer to its end Teachers and pupils sighed with A-men. As October the 8th gradually drew near Sophomore dance committees pulled into high gear, While they worked they grinned and bore it And no one knew how much they adored it, The Souvenirs played their music so sweet That we all agreed it was quite a treat Our teams this year tried their best And the students behind them cheered with zest Although we lost more than we won We knew our fight was not yet done When victory came we knew then Verona s team was made of men At the end of the year when our term was done We all readily agreed as SOPH'S we had fun, Although we had oodles of homework We never gave up the fight, We filled our brains with knowledge And studied day and night. Although the band lacked numbers, it made up for it with skillful and enthusiastic players. The band this year made an excellent showing at football games, pep rallies, and concerts in spite of the fact that the rehearsals were very few and very short. Always eager and willing to play for the assemblies, though having only one rehearsal a week, were the members of the orchestra. They put on enioyable and successful concerts under the direction of Mr. Schill, whom they could not do without. The members of the orchestra who will graduate this year, will look back years from now and again relive the many tle moments which they ha Page 53 PROXY Y RENTS AJ Zegji, Xefn to rkghh Lane, Kenwonhy, lkng, HeXXa, Planck. Captained by Phil White, the 1949 football team consisted mostly of underclassmen. Left with only four lettermen from last year's championship squad, coach Dutch Wermuth had to build for the future. Although the team was considered green by the experts, the mistakes that cost several games this year will be turned into victories in the coming seasons. Sophomore Quarterback Len Clark developed into a real threat and by the end of the year his passing reminded the fans of last year when George Mills was pitching the pig- skin. Halfbacks Jerry Carroll, Pat Sempier and Dick Kephart showed they had what it takes to make the yardage. Don Marriott and Richie Martin were young- sters who gained valuable experience seeing action. The Junior Class was well represented and like the Sophomores many players saw action for the first time, but having another year at Verona, Dutch used them in games to gain experience. The positions on the forward wall were held down by almost all Juniors, Co-Captains elect Jack Kingston and Harold Kortright Verona about to recover a loose ball. were the tackles, while Charlie Burst and Herb Light played end and guard respectively. Tom Hatchett was a mainstay in the backfield while big Jack Larkin also saw action on the line. Then there were the Seniors, two of them made first team Suburban Conference. They were Phil White the dependable wingback whose hard running kept Verona's hopes from dying com- pletely and end Jerry Foss who did a remarkable iob of snaring passes. Guard George Voss who is noted for his running guard play in the Thanksgiving Day game and diminutive guard Fred Marks were the only ex- perienced seniors with White and Foss. Although the team only beat two foes and tied an- other, one of their victories was the upset of the year as they knocked off Glen Ridge which turned out to be the winner of the Suburban Conference. We are certain that the experienced gained by these underclassmen will be a great asset to Verona in football for the 1950 team, and we wish them the best luck ever, but we doubt if they will need it because their experience will be better than their opponent's luck. Under the able coaching of Skip Smith the Verona thin clads have set an enviable record of eight wins against one loss in Suburban Con- ference competition. lt is expected that the 1950 squad will prove no exception to this rule. The 1949 squad scored the first grand slam in the school's history, winning the Newark Invi- tation Meet, the Suburban Conference title and for the second year in succession walked off with the State Group l crown. The graduation of such former stars as Alderio, Pringle, Sempier, Davis, Marshall, and Levy will place a heavy burden on the 1950 team. Never- theless the Skipper will probably come up as usual with a well balanced squad. At this writ- ing it appears that the responsibility for maintain- ing the Maroon and White's supremacy over its rivals will rest on a few returning veterans assisted by a few members of last year's squad who will have improved with experience. lt is expected that Captain George Voss will continue his fine performance in the pole vault with Len Clark being looked to for additional points. ln the hurdles, always a strong point with Smith coached teams, John Jenkins, Tom Hatchett, Jerry Foss, and Buddy Phelps are counted on to put Verona in the win column. The mile and 880 again will be in the capable hands of Lee Horner and Teddy Booth. In the field events Bobby Flynn, Jack Larkin, Robert Gillen, Todd Martin, Bob Dietz and Jack Kingston are the boys who may give us those needed points in a close meet. Only in the dashes will there be a shortage of material with Ken Gillen and Rocco Guido the only 1949 squad members returning with experience in these events. ASEB LL The 1950 baseball season will find Coach Woody Litwhiler at the reins for his fourth year and the team will be headed for a pretty success- ful season. In the year that has passed only a few of the men were lost and their replacements should be pretty fair. The main weak spots of the team will be pitching and catching. The V. H. S. Team will definitely feel the loss of pitchers Don Clapp and Fred Brooks but they will have George Watson to do the main amount of pitching and also Jim Bradley will move in from the outfield to do some of the job. Catching will be done probably by a promising young Sophomore Andy Barese or a newcomer to the school Proc Baker. The infield will be rounded out by about the same fellows who played there last year. At first base will be Jim Brennan, at second base probably will be Phil White or Dave Fulton and at third base, Carl Mead. At short stop will be the captain Dick Fifoot, playing his third year of varsity ball. Rounding out the outfield will probably be Don Wilcox in center field, fianked by Harold Kort- right and Jerry Carroll. lt should be a pretty good team that fields the diamond when the team opens the season early in the Spring. They have good balance and a fair pitching staff but need a good catcher to make them a real Conference threat. Look for a good showing because they'll be in there fighting.
