Wilkin x My 5ENlL7Fi'5 Dean's Farewell AREWELL to the class of 1932! We say it with regret when we think of parting with you, but with earnestness when we think of the real meaning of the words. We hope that you will fare well in all that you are about to undertake, whether it is con- tinued study or immediate work of other kinds. We shall miss you in the High School life where you have been such a self-evident factor for the last four years. May you take with you the energy you have shown here, as you go on to college, or to business, or to the making of your own homes! Take with you also the principles of honesty and right living for which you are proud to have your High School stand! Always you will have the interest of your schoolmates and teachers who will be ready to encourage you in your progress, and to rejoice with you in your successes. So go forth, 1932, with all your you- th and enthusiasm, looking for new worlds to conquer ! It is your privi- lege to help the present world change the spelling of the word that will con- front you on every side, and to make this a dePRESSiON year. May you have the strength and vision to 'fpress on toward the deve- lopment of all your varied plotentiali- ties, and so to lives of happiness and usefulness! M. The task of calming the jubilant spirits in order to elect our officers fell to Miss Hosp and Mr. Wilkin, class deans. The officers were Walter Burchum, presi- dent, Victor Duffy, vice-president, and Lena Di Bella, secretary. Duly in- itiated on a hike to the Hemlocks, we gave a class party and ended our first year ready for a new conquest in the fall. ln our Sophomore year Victor Duffy, president, was assisted by Doris Sims, vice-president, and Jean Fismer, se- cretary. Miss Cheney was our class dean. The annual hike was no more and our wrath was vented on the Freshmen by very mild means. The operetta, Rosemunde, had many Sop- homores in the cast. We set a re- putation for enjoyable parties at the one we gave in March. Another June had come and we were half way thr- ough High School. The Juniors were an important group the next year. Miss Cook was our dean and Victor Duffy, Hugh Lynn and Floyd Bragg, our officers. The school play, The Magistrate, had a majority of juniors in the cast as did the operetta, Sailor Maids. In the spring, after much hard work, we showed what we could do by pro- ducing the tenth edition of Shadows. We were the hosts at Class night and after the graduation exercises we were Seniors. As dignified Seniors we invited the school to a good time at our Hal- Iowe'en Party. Our officers were Victor Duffy, president, Virginia Mil- ler, vice-president, and Dorothy Jacob, secretary. An almost all Senior cast. presented Honor Bright as the annual play and in March the Glee Clubs produced The, Pirate's Daugh- ter. ln the Spring our class dean, Miss Cook, entertained us with a party at her home and the P. T. A. gave us a dinner where we enjoyed the good fellowship of our classmates. Class Night and graduation, swiftly following, marked the close of our High School career. P. M. '32 l18Jb Class Song '32 Beloved halls of High School days, We leave thy friendly, shelt'ring arms To venture forth, to go our ways- To taste life's proffered heights and charms. And though our paths may never meet Once we have parted hence, we'll still Keep always thy clear mem'ry sweet - Thy high ideals, our soverign will. CHORUS Hail! fairest class, the red and blue! Hail noble class of thirty-two! Our High School years we've put behind Among our happiest memories, And onward go, to cut or bind, To lose or win, God only sees Our future, knows our road, but we, Whatever be our lot, will aim To keep thy colors unstain'd, free. To do just honors to thy name. M. E. H. '32 THE HSHADOWS' SOUL By the time you, my reader, reach this page that foretells my bio. graphy you will have read and gazed upon writings and pictures. which, as the years roll by, it will become impossible to evaluate because of the memories I will awaken. I will be taken to my new home and undoubtedly receive a position of importance in the bookcase or on the drawing table. In the span of life I will witness sorrow and joy, misfortune and happiness, but no matter which prevails I will always do my best to guide my owner back through the years to pleasant memories. From time to time l will be picked up and have my pages thumbed and possibly torn by a thoughtless move., but this will serve only to en- rich me because it will be a symbol of the services l have shown. As my master's hair turns silvery, and his back begins to bend, l also will grow older because l am proud to state that l will always be a part of my owner's life. Founded and created to bring back and restore cherished in- cidents, I will live with my possessor and serve my duty to him, and upon his death live on as a memorial. Each room now has two representatives instead of one, as previously. The officers are Fred Beam, President, Victor Duffy, Vice-Presidentg and Vir- ginia Miller, Secretary. The Student Council has been very active this year. There was a definite need of student participation in school government. The Council, with the help and guidance of Mr. Crane, has tried to fill this need. V. M. '32 i321 Parent-Teacher Association The seventh year of the Henry B. Whitehorne High School Parent-Tea- cher Association has drawn to a close. Its aim has been to familiarize the parents with the work of the Mental Hygiene Clinic, headed by Dr. Zachry of Montclair State Teachers' College. The Program Chairman, Mrs. Harry Dryden, in co-operation with Mr. F. N. Brown, arranged a program of speakers on the subject of Mental Hygiene. These proved very interest- mg. The annual banquet was held in February under the capable supervi- sion of Miss Hopper. Mrs. Elmer Lof- strom, our President, after a gracious greeting, introduced Dr. Finley of Montclair State Teachers' College, who spoke on the subject Five As- pects of Teachers' College . Delight- ful songs were rendered by the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs under the able direction of Mrs. Seeds and Mr. Schill, school instructors of vocal and instru- mental music. A card party and dance for the benefit of the Scholarship Loan Fund was given on the evening of April 8. The amount of S50 was given to the fund. At the regular April meeting the Association offered financial assist- ance to Shadows , if needed in its publication. The Association also proposed to give the Senior Class a banquet in the school cafeteria early in June, in com- pensation for the loss of their trip to Washington. This offer was grate- fully accepted by the Seniors. In closing the year's work may the Parent-Teacher Association offer this anonymous tribute to The Schoolhouse I aim the schoolhouse-I am of many storied stone, soaring above busy city thoroughfares, or I am a mere cluster of weather beaten boards in a wilderness that is trackless save for the path leading to my door. I am the guardian of the hopes of every generation, and l am true to my trust. In me all things are equalg in me are no distinctions among those who are proud to serve and those who seek only to be served. lt is my duty not alone to teach, but equally to learn, to keep perpetually a light upon my altars, kindling them forever afresh from the inextinguishable flame that burns in every young heart, the sacr- ed fires of love and knowledge, and love of freedom, and love of country, for as l succeed, America succeeds. I am the true democracy-l am the schoolhouse . Respectfully submitted, Winifred A. McEwan. Nina Palmer Secretary .....,,........, Janet Oates At Christmas time the clubs made an early-morning tour of Verona, singing Christmas carols. As part of their social program, the two clubs went on a picnic to Green Pond on June 10. Every member of the club appre- clates the efforts of Mrs. Seeds to make this year interesting and enjoy- able for all. D. M. S. '32 l35J THE ORCHESTRA Everyone has noticed the great improvement in our High School Or- chestra, and we all know that this is due, every bit of it, to Mrs. Osman Seeds, our former Miss Esther Allen. This year Mr. Schill joined with us and added his efforts toward making a bigger and better orchestra. We have derived a great deal of fun and enjoy- ment out of this, as well as experience in playing for benefits, plays, and the pleasure of our assemblies. At present there are eighteen mem- bers and every one of them is decided- ly musically inclined. The officers elected this year are: President, Doro- thy Browng Vice-president, Ethel Johnson. Those that are leaving this year re- gret that there will no longer be an orchestra for them to work in, and sin- cerely hope that those left behind will have as much pleasure as they did in carrying on their work. It dealt with the complications brought about when a pretty feminine book agent takes the place of a miss- ing chorus girl who is engaged to the hero. Of course, just as matters are sailing along rather smoothly, the missing girl turns up. The plot thick- ens, but our able actors and actresses carry on and untangle the threads, following them to an unexpected climax. Those who took part in the produc- tion are as follows: Virginia Miller, Ruth Jean Maier, Emma Oates, Mar- ion McEwan, Theiodora Blake, Irene Elphick, Elsa Pilger, George Mowry, Frederick Beam, Nelson Smith, Boyd Dickerson, Wilson Cupp, Harold Kras- ner, Angus Macmillan, Ralph Cohen, Charles Smiley. Stage Manager-- Floyd Bragg, Electrician-Raymond Noyes. Dancing followed the performance. E381 HI-Y The Verona Hi-Y Club had for its officers this year, Thomas Breese, Pre- sident: Otto Cannon, Vice-presidentg Nelson Smith, Secretary-treasurer. The advisers of the club were Mr. Franklin of the Montclair Y. M. C. A. and Mr. Anderson of the faculty. Mr. Franklin secured several well-known speakers for the Club's benefit. Thr- oughout the year supper-meetings were held which were enjoyed by all. N. E. S. '34 i411 SPGRTS I42I SOCCER ln the fall of 1931, Verona High School's soccer squad reported for practice. With five veterans forming a nucleus, Doc soon had rounded out a team which proved to be one of the most successful. The record for the season included victories over Panzer Junior Varsity, Montclair, Verona High School Alumni, and Paterson East Side, and tie-scores with Dickinson High and Harrison's state champion team. Our forward wall consisted of Char- les Ellis, Dud Beam, Jake Ginsberg, Fred Clover, and Peanuts Tobin. The half-back line was formed by Milton Nann, Gabby Cannon, Cap- tain Nelson Smith, and Alexander Ashe. Captain-elect Jimmie Swallow and Fred Lahm filled the Maroon and White fullback positions. Goalie Andy Cohen was rewarded for his excellent work throughout the season by his selection as All-State Goalie. B. D. 32 i431 BASKETBALL Although our basketball team was not highly successful in victories, it was extremely successful in following Verona's standard of good sportsman- ship. Coach Doc Goeltz was greatly pleased with the Never-give-up spirit which the team showed in its encoun- ters with some of the best basketball teams in the state. The team was ably fed from for- ward by Captain Nell Smith. The other members of this 'ffighting team were Freddie -Beam, forward, Vic Duffy, center, Andy Cohen. center, Joe Dox, guard, and Jimmie Swallow, guard. Coach Doc Goeltz says of this team, I considered it a privilege to coach such a fine bunch of good spirited boys, and l only hope that in years to come Verona High School's basketball teams will follow the fine example of the 1931-1932 team. F. H. B. '32 i441 BASEBALL With the season only half over as this is sent to press, it is rather hard to tell what the baseball team will do this year. In the beginning of the season the team was hampered by cold weather, but is coming along well under the careful supervision of Coach Wilkin and Captain Smith. So far the team has played six of its scheduled games. Having won three of these games and lost three, the team has a percentage of which it is hoped will be raised as the season oes along. This year the team has played some wonderful games, considering some of the bad breaks they have had. One of its big achievements was the de- feating of the strong Bloomfield ieam. The members of the team are as follows: Pitchers, Beam and Dox': cat- chers, Ginsberg and Dox: first base, Swallow: second base, Crawford and Bragg: third base, Newton and Mowry: short stop, Di Bella and Beam: left field, Smith: center field, Cohen: right field, Crabtree: substi- tute, Lahm.
